Use of Free Fall
Greetings, all. I'm running a short Eclipse Phase scenario for my players (part of a 12 month, 12 game, 6 GM's experiment we're blogging and podcasting about) - we've just finished our 2nd of 3 sessions (not including character creation.) I created a somewhat complex and intense encounter for the group. Flying through the thin atmosphere of Europa, a signal is detected from somewhere within the aircraft. (Yes, I know, why not a submarine considering its Europa. They had the option.) Immediately there's a missile lock alarm and our pilot has to descend into a crevice system. At the same time, the assassin bot secreted in the back of the plane makes its assault. (I won't get into the back story of this all - it's complicated.) So: One PC is making piloting checks to avoid crashing the plane and to try to shake off the missiles. The others are getting bounced around inside the passenger area, trying to fight off an attacking bot. The upshot: How do you deal with the free fall skill? I toyed with a few different methods: 1. If you fail your free fall skill you take a random amount of damage (for this situation anyway) and you lose any action you're trying to accomplish. 2. If you fail your free fall skill each complete 10 points of MoF constitutes 1 point of damage and you lose your action. 3. Ignore the damage. The amount you fail your roll by is added to the difficulty of your skill roll for any further action that turn. What do you think? How do you handle Free Fall?

Re: Use of Free Fall
I would go for the difficulty option for most situations, but in this one where things and people are getting thrown around damage should be an element. But it is very much a judgement call.

Re: Use of Free Fall
Yup, that's the one we ended up using (after having tried the others!) - I think one of the problems we encountered is that because this is our first go at Eclipse Phase people weren't sure which skills to put their points into. Consequently, not many people were that good at Free Fall. Which meant that they went round after round incapable of doing anything productive. I actually quite like systems which leave a lot to the GM to figure - it allows them a bit more freedom of expression, if you know what I mean.
