The article on torture
The article on torture greased some brain gears. A skilled psychosurgeon could enforce a need to tell people everything they want to know. They can also block lying. At that point, does the interrogatee have any defenses against telling the interrogator everything?

High Willpower. Hidden autodelete plugins. Implanted psychosurgical autodelete killswitches. Strong encryption on your cortical stack. Dead Switch augmentations. Psychosurgical pruning of forks so that they have no useful data (or even incorrect data... hmm, Operation: Mincemeat v1.1). Hardening against psychosurgical torture. A team of loyal and/or desperate allies willing to attempt an immediate rescue before the psychosurgeon gets started. Keep in mind that skilled psychosurgeons don't grow on trees (and, even if they did, it's not like there are many trees left). Psychosurgeons who lack sufficient ethics and possess the necessary skills to make superb psychosurgeons are going to be even rarer (hardly unheard of, but not the sort of resource you have sitting on 1 hour standby, available for brainpeeling at the drop of a stack). Also, psychosurgery is a difficult, tricky process that fails as often as it succeeds, and it takes time (and if you use simulspace acceleration, remember that there's a -20 penalty to the psychosurgeon's roll). So, yes, eventually, if your fork or backup falls into the hands of your enemies, they will know everything, but there's still a window of time--a fairly extensive one, at that--where recovery with a degree of certainty that the data is not yet compromised is a possibility. All that being said, no one can interrogate an ego whose supporting computational structure has been subjected to high entropy. If you don't have compunctions regarding sending out suicide forks, that's the way to go...

More to the point, any sort
More to the point, any sort of manipulation - torture, psychosurgery, drugs, etc. - tends to distort memory and recall, at least according to the books I've read on the subject. It's not a matter of getting someone to talk - everybody talks eventually - it's getting reliable information from them.

http://www.farcastblog.com/2013/12/365-greetings-from-future.html And that's the year. Thanks for reading! One of the Farcast readers is preparing a spiffy PDF with all the entries properly edited and formatted, but if you just can't wait, I've compiled together a quick & dirty Farcast Ashcan PDF for your enjoyment. One would certainly hope that you enjoyed doing something like this. So, gotta ask: with that kind of project under your belt, what's next on your highly ambitious checklist of things to try and do?

A Touch of Necromancy
Hey y'all, apologies for the thread-necromancy. Been busy trying to get my book published, and I'm meditating on doing another yearblog in 2015 - Cthulhu-rpg related this time - and I'm basically trying to look for lessons learned on Farcast to put towards it. Now that y'all have had a bit of time to reflect on it (or forget about it), does anyone have some criticism on Farcast, both what worked and what didn't work? Schedule, content, mechanics, flavor, layout, etc.?

I really
I really enjoyed the first 100 or so entries. Then I got sidetracked and couldn't get back into it. The blog interface just doesn't make it easy to just start reading. Maybe if I knew how to use cheat codes to expand everything and to have it run in reverse order. But I've never developed those skills. So maybe an idea would be that at the end of each two weeks or month you toss everything into a quick pdf (like exported from MS word) so when people like me get all behind. It is easier to grab the last few weeks and get caught up quickly. Also going to vote for a second year of EP related stuff. But only because I'm selfish. Kindalas

Canageek was working on it, but I think real life got in the way. I'd do it myself, but desktop publishing capabilities are still limited until I can afford a new laptop.

My experience is somewhat
My experience is somewhat similar to Kindalas'. First and foremost, I enjoyed the posts tremendously. There were some really, really good ones in there, and with the richness of the EP universe those small slices of life and strangeness worked really well. But I could only rarely get into a habit of reading them daily. What I ended up doing was say on every other week, I'd go there, read maybe 5 posts on average. Sometimes I'd go there more often, and sometimes I'd read more posts than that, but when I hit one I'd seen, I'd stop - since finding the ones I missed was difficult. I think a weekly or monthly .pdf release would work much better. It mirrors my experience with story plot web comics - I don't like reading one strip at a time, and I have to be VERY motivated to keep track of my progress with bookmarks. The only ones I end up reading in total are those that release PDFs or have an app to track my progress (like Schlock Mercenary). I guess some cookie mojo that tracked progress could work on a website also. And it wouldn't have to be a fancy PDF. Just a barebones text version like on the blog would do the job for me. And now I think I'll go back and dig up some of the ones I missed last year :)

Lucky. I would stop by Farcast every week or so when it was updating... but two months ago I just sat down one day and read half of it, then read a bunch of stories from Ancient History's short story blog. Planning on setting aside some time for a round two.

Editing is done
I made two files the MS Word main file and the PDF that I exported from it. ... is the PDF This took four nights just sorting and formatting. I maybe removed two sentences to get the tables to line up. When an entry was going to spill over onto two pages I reduced the font sizes to make it all fit. I hope this makes the work more casually accessible. Kindalas

Bumping this for a few reasons. First, thank you to Bobby Derie for putting this together. It's an amazing amount of work, and I fully intend to snarf quite a bit of it. Second, the Farcast site no longer exists, so doing a bump so that people who haven't seen it can get to the downloaded PDF very nicely done by Kindalas. Thank you for doing this, as otherwise I couldn't have gotten a copy. Finally, the resources page refers to the blog that no longer exists. Might want to instead redirect to the dropbox. Really nice work with this.
