Farcast - An Eclipse Phase Yearblog
How many ideas do you have in a year? How many in a day? Could you think of just one good idea, each day? I'm going to find out. Farcast is a yearblog for the Eclipse Phase roleplaying game by Posthuman Studios. A new idea, a new entry every day for 2013 - new locations, groups, NPCs, artifacts, morphs, tech, events, weapons, drugs, diseases, and plot seeds for players and gamemasters to use as they would, or take inspiration from in their own games. The target wordcount for each entry is around 500, and will rely primarily on the material in the Eclipse Phase main book. This is all completely unofficial fan material; I have no affiliation with Posthuman Studios, though I think they're a great bunch. A Word on Language When referring to genderless or intersex characters, I've chosen to use the formulation ze/hir/hirs/hirself rather than he/him/his/himself or she/her/hers/herself. Hopefully this won't cause too much confusion.

I like the jellybone suit and plan to adopt it. What would you say is the threshold DV for failure of the suit? For instance, standard vac suits fail at 20 or 30 points of damage in a single attack. Also, what keeps void station on station? Thanks for Rimwalkers, the outer system needs more criminals and outcasts. Would they qualify as Brinkers?

30 points. Suppose I should mention that...

Very carefully controlled correctional thrusters to counteract cosmic wind and momentum from docking vehicles, mainly. Absolute position probably varies by a couple kilometers a year, but there's nothing else nearby since it's off the plane of the ecliptic.

A quick sugestion
Can you please please please switch to the the They pronoun system that is used in the EP books instead of the hir, sheir shar thinger? It is just that as I read ever time I see one of the gender obfuscating pronouns it completely pulls me out of my reading thought train. It is almost as if I am bumping into unnecessary techno babble and it just messes me up. I don't know why it does this but it does. But instead of just requesting that you change things I'll volunteer if you want to go back and edit the past 55 entries for you because other then my one tiny gripe of the language throwing me off the blog is fantastic and ambitious and I am definitely incorporating your ideas into my game as I discover places to toss them. You're not the only one who
You're not the only one who has complained about it, and I've been giving it some consideration. I initially chose to use it here because that's what I had used in my EP fanfic - there are, I feel, some benefits to ze/hir/hirs/hirself than they/their/theirs/theirself - but given the confusion I'll probably go back and change it. The thing is that I typically run a 4-6 week lead, so the number of entries that need to be amended is currently closer to 85. We'll see if I can make the time in between my other projects (in addition to Farcast, I have a weekly fiction blog, a book-length Lovecraft/Mythos essay, occasional freelance work, and my full-time employment...so a bit busy busy.)

I like the gender neutral
I like the gender neutral pronouns. I'm still appreciative that you introduced me to this option for the universal They with some of your fiction here. I've experienced Kindalas' problem of getting knocked out of the story by alt.pronouns. My eye catches them as spelling problems. (yes that's very ironic I know!) But I've found that with increased exposure my eye accepts them. I found it helps if you've written a story or two using them. The problem I have with reading them now is that my mind puts a character described with GN pronouns in the chick category. Apparently my mind has pattern recognizers for; "Dude", "Female/sexual", "Female/non-sexual" and no way to deal with the None-of-the-above. It's pretty frustrating on a couple of levels. I say it's a good thing to let It's be ze as long as you let He's be he, and she's be she when it's appropriate. For that mater the sentient it is sometimes appropriate too.

Mea Culpa: My mode of speech can make others feel uninvited to argue or participate. This is the EXACT opposite of what I intend when I post.

I would just like to add,
I would just like to add, while I have no real issue with the gender neutral pronouns, I agree with the general consensus that I could do without them. I understand why certain people might really like them, not having a pronoun that accurately reflects ones gender outside of 'they' must be frustrating, I do much prefer 'they' or the sentient 'it'. Either way, keep at it. The blog has been fantastic so far, one of those things I have an alert on to remind me to check it everyday.

Switch to singular they is almost complete - though I might have missed a few instances. It's a bit clunky for some things, but this whole project is for the fans, so as long as it makes things easier to read all's well.

Unfortunately already covered in Panopticon
Unfortunately the Neo-Beluga, Neo-Dolphin, Neo-Hominid (Gorilla), Neo-Orca, Neo-Pig, Neo-Porpoise, and Neo-Whale are all presented in Panopticon, with the Takko (synth octopus) and some habitats that they live in. Rimward has some additional stuff related to Ceres and Europa and the adaptation of some of the above mentioned morphs to those environments, as well as some additional habitats. (There are also the Surya: sun whales in Sunward...) Regardless, I think that without anyplace for them to live, it would be wierd/silly, but because the habitats and alien ocean adaptations were included, it is cool. -Joe

Feedback
It's really hard for me to find anything substantially bad with any of your posts (aside from the whale one I'd pointed out earlier.) The biggest fault I can find is grammar, and a) that's not really important, and b) consistent with most of the EP published books, so it's really a non-issue. None of the posts are things I would have thought of, so I'm just grateful you're doing it, and hope you continue. -Joe
