General Character Creation Discussion
Based on: a second set of personal epiphanies, re-reading rule books, reading the wiki, and indirectly receiving a second set of advice, I have come to the conclusion that I need to rethink everything I know about character creation. I have compiled a list of general rules for character creation. If you disagree with something or if there is something you think I should add, then let me know. Also, note that this list has contradictions within itself.

Always have fray
Always have perception
Always have some networking
Keep aptitudes between 10-20 due to fork and morph modifiers
Everything is easier when it is divisable by 5
Due to ego casting and software depreciation (it gets outdated), don't buy credits
Do not spend too much CP on starting morphs unless there is not much ego casting
SOM is not that useful
INT and REF determine intuition
WIL is pretty important
Specializations are 10 for 5
Keep infrequent background skills or skills you can take time on at 40
Keep useful but not critical skills at 60
Having skills above 60 is wasteful
Have a few skills, 3-5, at 70-80 to be your core specialties
Social engineers are very useful
Hackers should always have Infosec
Hackers should always have programming
Hackers should always have interfacing
Having a Skill of 90 is very wasteful
Hackers should have a infosec Skill of 80-90 (Transhuman page 114)
Get as much rep in character creation as possible
Get rep in Autonomist, Guanxi, and/or Civicnet for morph brokerage and gear
Some of these seem contradictory: +Having skills above 60 is wasteful +Have a few skills, 3-5, at 70-80 to be your core specialties +Hackers should have a infosec Skill of 80-90 (Transhuman page 114)
A slight smell of ions....

This is one of the reasons I am confused

Simply put: yes, you can be wasteful when defining the character's specialties, or when setting skills that are used in opposed rolls. Infosec is THE KING SKILL in EP, and looking into the open playtest for EP2 it is there too (much longer than any, and frankly the Morph and gear creation could have used a lot more love). Thus you have two options when choosing Infosec as part of your defining skills: don't, or maximize it as much as possible (in EP1, being an Infolife makes it possible thanks to the hefty discounts), this includes gear quality, muse for teamwork bonuses, etc... The other defining skills can reach an effective value of 70-80 thanks to specializations and the bonuses from other skills, like Programming getting bonuses from Knowledge: , or Tactics from Knowledge: , , ; etc...
