Is there going to be and Eclipse Phase store? or will that be dependent on future publisher?

Yeah, i bought it on battlecorps, silly me for not being pregnoctic :D ;) Well, even if i loose the updates, i just have to incorporate the errata into the PDFs, so what *shrug* I don't play RPGs because i can download PDFs with it :D

EP will be available for direct purchase online, but we don't yet know exactly how. There are a few possibilities. :)

I'm glad that you also release the books freely then, because our Battlecorps group account was used to purchase the group's PDF copy of the game rules. Dude, you guys rock for making a CC game.

Well, the current ed of the rules and the GM pack have been released under the CCL, so I don't think a new company could retroactively change that for people who already had it. And if they did, let's face it, people would mostly ignore them. New stuff could maybe be released under some other system. I think the main issue here, though, is "How well did the honor system (CCL) work? Did EP make money, did people buy it when they had a license to take it for free?"

It was us at Posthuman that wanted and pushed Catalyst to allow the Creative Commons licensing, and that is not about to change. We believe that it's a positive for both sales and for the fans of the game.

It worked quite well. I'll just quote something Adam posted recently on the CBT and SR forums:
Quote:
One of the things that Posthuman Studios is going to do is be very upfront about sales figures, expenses, etc. So I'll start with this: we wanted Catalyst to sell EP at $10-15 for the PDF. They argued against it, and basically said "You'll need to sell twice as many copies in order to make the same amount of money." We said "Okay. If we don't sell twice as many copies of the PDF as (CatalystCoreBook) did in PDF in 18 months, you can take the difference in dollars out of our royalties." Less than six weeks after the PDF was available (and this was after we seeded the PDF to bittorrent ourselves -- anyone could have it for free, legally), we broke that mark. This meant that we had made the same amount of money, *and* we had the PDF in the hands of at least twice as many people! A few months after that, Catalyst lowered their prices on all core books, and that Leviathans would be Creative Commons-licensed as well.

It's statistics like these that need to be ingrained into the heads of the jackasses that run the other game companies out there. Not that I'm gonna name any specific names. *cough*D&D*cough* Sorry, I caught an internet cold.

Decivre/It Must -- if you call someone a jackass, they are less likely to do nice things for you. :) I understand being frustrated with WotC's business decisions and I personally think some of them are not good decisions, but let's remember that there are _real people_ working at WotC and every game company, and not only that, but some of those real people end up taking a bunch of flak for decisions that they didn't make (and may not even agree with themselves, but still have to defend as part of their job.) You can say that you don't like a decision (or a book, or an entire game, or any other product) without being rude about the creators or the people that work there. I don't want to stifle that sort of opinion -- but please remember that game companies are staffed with real humans, and some of those humans are friends with people who make games you DO like. I have friends at WotC, I have friends at Steve Jackson Games -- matter of fact, a couple SJG friends were most generous with advice and information about something they recently did that we at Posthuman were interested in also doing. The game industry is small, and we firmly believe that a rising tide raises all boats! (Which is one of the reasons why we're willing to share sales statistics and want to do more of it ... because if we can help other publishers and educate up-and-coming publishers and fans to the realities of the business, all the better!)

Actually, I'm not implying that any specific developers were behind the bad decisions that go on at such companies. I always remember that bigger groups like Wizards of the Coast are corporations that answer to larger bodies, and a collection of shareholders. I also know that those shareholders and larger bodies are not necessarily a part of the roleplaying industry, such as the case with Hasbro (who deals in the much larger board game and toy industries). Perhaps jackass wasn't the proper word to use, but rather jackassery... whomever was responsible for the decisions that were made in handling the IP committed very foolish mistakes, whether it was one person or an entity consisting of a number of people. Hopefully information like what you provided will help in alleviating the myths that caused such bad decisions.

Not on things you've already published, no, but you could simply release the updated versions without said license. It's sort of a moot point, though, since, like you said, you wouldn't want to (probably partly because of the bad PR that would result, as well as the lack of the good PR and word-of-mouth you're already getting).

reminds me of what doctorow mentions here: http://craphound.com/?p=2758 especially the part where a online music store have their price set 1/2 of average price, and ends up 3 times as many sales, basically making more money then the competition. Yet they cant go on like that for long term, as the record companies wont allow it.

All this talk about selling stuff cheaper and making more sales reminds me of a little game I played on the Commodore 64 back in elementary school called Lemonade Stand. They gave you the temperature of the day, and you set you price on your lemonade. Yeah, you can price high and get a few sales, but price low, and you get a ton more and an increase in profits. So, I like how EP/Posthuman Studios priced out the PDF (ha...and even even dropped on BitTorrent yourselves), and still pulled in a lot of sales. Good work guys!

CafePress, or something of that sort, would probably be the best way to do it. Sure the shirts may not be as high quality as fiber-embedded shirt logos, and art is restricted to only the mid-chest and -back area, but they can be pretty good looking and print-on-demand shirts have no real risk of forming a no-sell backstock. Just something I thought I'd throw out.

Not necessarily. I'm in my mid-20s, and I can talk about all the Atari I used to play when I was young, even though I was still just an egg when that bad boy released. Of course, I have every intention of being rendered immortal within my lifetime, so I don't think I should ever feel old.

At times letting people act like dicks without telling them they're doing so is simply enabling them to go on being dicks, which doesn't help them or the community they're part of. Also, sometimes people just drive you away so much you don't care if calling them dicks helps or not, you just feel better doing it.

I wish we could get similar information on what WotC's sales have done since they stopped making PDFs. It hasn't prevented people from making PDFs of their books available. Based on what the WotC president said in an interview at the time, PDF sales constituted at least 10 percent of their book sales. It would be interesting to find out if those sales were replaced, or just went away.

Re: Future of Eclipse Phase?
I have no idea what percentage of WotC's sales were electronic, and I've seen no numbers that I see as credible. Do you have a link to that source of info? But one thing I know for sure: they've made $0 on PDF sales lately. Did they make that up with increased print sales or increased DDI subscriptions? That, I don't know.

All I know is that they stopped making money off of me. For some reason any book I buy from them is terrible quality paper. Doesn't matter how I get it to my home it will crinkle all to hell and sometimes run. The strange thing is if I travel 50 miles west to Glasgow and buy it it is fine, even when brought home. But I refuse to get a bus to Glasgow every time I want to buy a D&D book. Shame, I like 4E.

Hasbro doesn't release detailed sales figures of individual product lines; only sales totals by division. Their investor relations page is here if anyone is interested. So any numbers you see in regard to individual title sales are probably here-say or guesstimates. Diamond Shipping is the sole distributor for the comic book industry and it does track sales of individual titles to retailers. Its sister company Alliance Game Distributors may follow the same practice but I believe you have to be a retailer or manufacturer to have access to that information. And, unlike comics, I don't believe they're the only game distributor.

That's rather odd as the WotC products I purchase are printed on good quality paper. Either yours come in on a leaky tramp freighter and are exposed to excessive moisture or you have a local Hasbro affiliate in the UK that uses cheaper paper stock.

Now I'm going to show my lack on knowledge in the world of books. So, Posthuman Studios owns EP, and Catalyst was the Publisher. So, what does a Publisher do? What can't Posthuman Studios produce EP on its own? Again, sorry if the answers of these questions are obvious.

Catalyst handled things such as dealing with printers, distributors, doing arrangements for conventions, etc. Basically: a lot of business stuff that if Posthuman was handling itself, we would have less time for Making Cool Stuff. We can do it, and it's under consideration, but we're also considering other suitable partners to take the business-burden off us. :-) (This is a very short post for a topic that we could fill an entire book with ... )

Not quite. If we're making a reference to the music industry, then it's more a combination CD printing company and distributer. They are in charge of manufacturing the books (or finding companies to manufacture the books) and finding stores willing to carry the books, as well as advertising. A better comparison would be the videogame industry, which is similarly organized. In Halo's case, the developer was Bungie and the publisher was Microsoft.

No. In the "traditional" publishing world, an agent is the person/company who takes books from their stable of authors and attempts to find publishers who will publish them. :)

Adam, you might talk to the guys at Pagan Publishing about how they've handled self-production. Oops! I had my numbers wrong. The 10:1 ratio was the ratio WotC President Greg Leeds claimed to be the number of illegal downloads vs. legal purchases. Not sure if he meant legal PDF purchases or all purchases. http://www.enworld.org/forum/news/254134-exclusive-interview-wizards-coa...

We cannot share sales figures, but I can tell you that we conservatively estimate the ratio of illicit downloads to legally purchased copies was 10:1.
By comparison, the developer of Crysis pinned their estimate of piracy at 20:1. http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=19203 I'm wondering if there's a similar ratio known of downloads from the official torrent vs. total sales?
