Oops! I had my numbers wrong. The 10:1 ratio was the ratio WotC President Greg Leeds claimed to be the number of illegal downloads vs. legal purchases. Not sure if he meant legal PDF purchases or all purchases. http://www.enworld.org/forum/news/254134-exclusive-interview-wizards-coa...

2. Is online piracy a continuing annoyance for Wizards, a substantial concern, or something between the two? Are there estimates of lost sales figures that you can share? The piracy became a substantial concern when we saw thousands of copies of our recently released Player’s Handbook 2 being downloaded illegally within hours of its release. We cannot share sales figures, but I can tell you that we conservatively estimate the ratio of illicit downloads to legally purchased copies was 10:1.
By comparison, the developer of Crysis pinned their estimate of piracy at 20:1. http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=19203 I'm wondering if there's a similar ratio known of downloads from the official torrent vs. total sales?
I think the biggest problem I see with that statement is that both groups fail to realize the market impact that the piracy of their product probably had. There is no telling how many people got ahold of those products that wouldn't have already purchased it. A 10:1 piracy ratio might seem like a lot, but if 91% of the people who have a copy of that book wouldn't have bought it anyways, then it becomes a moot point. Besides, I think that number is actually based on digital copies exclusively... a 10:1 ratio seems over-exaggerated if compared to actual book sales. If that's the case, they've made a bad marketing decision all around... I'd rather have 10:1 piracy to sold digital copy sales than 1:0, anyday. As for file distribution, I can only speak for what I have seen in my area. From the time I downloaded the free PDF, I have distributed it to 43 other people via bluetooth on my phone. Of those 43, I know personally that 6 of them have purchased copies since. I would like to note that I gave a copy to people I figured would purchase the game anyways, and that I am leaving out the number of people I have distributed the game to outside of bluetooth (most of which don't go to shops because they are too poor to afford the hobby). Moreover, I have no clue how many more people they distributed these copies to, and how many of those people purchased a copy. Therein lies a potential problem when dealing with Creative Common products, in that it is damn near impossible to keep track of actual distribution figures. But one thing that my example does provide, in my opinion, is the potential for market penetration. In the entire time I have been at that shop, I have only seen one other product get into as many players' hands... and that was D&D 3.5, when somebody at the shop started handing out free discs with pirated PDFs when the boss wasn't around. When Eclipse Phase's distribution is in 2nd place behind pirated copies of the most popular RPG around, that says something to me.

Re: Future of Eclipse Phase?
My question is in regards to the core book. My gaming group just finished up our latest D&D campaign and we were all set to get into EP when we learned about the recent troubles. My concern is that we can't get enough books for everyone in the group - most of them like to have an actual book to read, rather than a PDF. I agree with them (I have two copies of the book, and would have bought a third book with the errata in it if one was available), as character creation is a little complex. What sort of time frame are we looking at before we see a second printing of the core book? What are your thoughts on us having our PDFs printed at a Kinkos or other printers, for personal use only? We can get the book printed locally for around $.10 a page, double sided but in black in white (a true crime considering how beautiful the core book is). With the GM section taken out it's only around 300 pages and not that expensive. To be honest I was ready to just move on to another game. I've been around long enough to see games come and go, and this sort of seemed like a game that was going. I'll admit that after reading through this thread that maybe I'll see some more books. My group, on the other hand, are rapid to play, so all we need are some books.

We do not yet have a time frame on when the reprint will be available. But we are not going anywhere -- unless you count back into stores... ;-) You can, OF COURSE, print out any of our PDFs, and the Creative Commons licensed ones -- you may print out multiple copies and give them to your friends/gaming group. It is far better that you play the game with 2 purchased copies and 4 PDF/printed copies than not play the game at all! :-)

Thanks for getting back to me so fast Adam. I have to agree with you - it is better to play than not play! I just wanted to make absolutely sure that you guys were okay with it before I went off and got some copies printed up. The group will be thrilled to hear that we are going ahead and playing this game next. I look forward to purchasing your upcoming products. Edit: Just wanted to ask - the PDF that's for sale on Drivethrurpg right now is that the second printing edition? I figure if I'm going to print off a few copies it might was well be the latest one.

Yup, it is! And you get free updates on DTRPG, so when we release new versions, you'll get those for free.

Note that our PDFs are listed under Posthuman Studios now on DriveThru and not CGL anymore: http://rpg.drivethrustuff.com/index.php?filters=0_0_0_0&manufacturers_id...

Any idea as to when/if you'll be able to "convert" those of us who purchased via CGL to DTRPG? Thanks in advance, AJC

This is such a great game I had to go pick up the PDF even though I have a copy of the book already. Now I just need to convince my players to try out a new system, again. Maybe a port over to Savage Worlds might be in order.

I hate to admit to being an unimaginative slug, but I'm really looking forward to Sunward, Gate Crashing, and some of the other future books. The free adventure and the one contained within the GMs screen.. but I'm looking forward to an in-depth look and having lots of adventure seeds and hooks to frame a proper campaign around. If I was a better man I'd be able to work with what I've got.. but there you go. Needless to say I can't wait for some of the Sunward PDF to be released.

Not yet -- we're still working on it. As soon as we know one way or another, we'll blog it.

Thank you, Rob and Adam, for being so present and fast with questions. It makes us, as fans, confident that this game will continue. My girlfriend and I are really enjoying the solo game that I'm running for her. We look forward to having a shelf full of Eclipse Phasey goodness. :)
