Not sure how I feel about it,
Not sure how I feel about it, really. On one hand, a lot of MRAs I have met are complete jackasses who deserve to be shot into the sun. On the other hand, I have met a fair few that had reasonable arguments about real issues that are largely effecting men (family court stuff mostly. Divorced fathers, usually.) But if it has been an issue, so much so that the developers feel the need for a blanket ban, then I guess it's for the best. I'm hardly part of the community any more, I've been absent close to a year now. Maybe it got a lot worse in the time that I was gone. At least you are standing up for what you believe in, which is something I can support.

I hope asking for an answer to my question, though, isn't too much to ask. It kind of decides whether I choose to support the company in the future or not. Is this decision based primarily on the experience with outspoken members of said movement, and would a similar ban be placed if members of other quasi-political movements acted in a similar way?

I'm only a moderator but...
...if members who self identify with a group act as badly here as the self identified MRA members did on these forums then I would treat their group in the same way. And unless one of the four PS+ owners corrects me, then I feel safe saying that they will do the same.

This is and should be handled with the same tone and demeanor you'd use when a White Power advocate starts going on about how we don't celebrate white history month. MRA goofballs espouse the same cognitive dissonance and it really has no place here.

Hell yeah!
Honestly this goes above and beyond what I would expect this company to do. I fully support this decision and as a long time fan of this game, I'm stoked you all have made a definitive stance on this. Now all that said. What's a guy got to do to be hired by ya'll? The more I learn about the way things are run the more it makes me want to contribute in a meaningful way.

stupidity.
Hey i have an idea how about everybody stops being bigoted and realize that people are people and that gender, race, sexual preference, country of origin, language, ect. DOESN'T fucking matter. MRM's are bigoted. Feminists are bigoted, racists are bigoted, homophobes are bigoted, xenophobes are bigoted. how about this instead aligning yourself with one group you actually give a fuck about HUMANITY and fight for equality for all, take on all issues fight for HUMAN RIGHTS not your twisted fucked up bullshit biased crap. fuck you Eclipse phase you bigoted fucks. fuck you MRM you bigoted fucks. judge individuals not groups. support all humans not just a few.
ShadowDragon8685 ShadowDragon8685's picture
Looks like we have another
Looks like we have another winner. The problem, Kilvehk, with "judge individuals, not groups," is that membership in some groups is compulsory - you don't get to choose to be a member of the "blacks" group, or "women" group, and even something such as the "American" group, whilst ostensibly optional, is set by default and very very hard to change if you don't like it. Membership in entirely voluntary groups, however, such as "MRAs," is not so hard to change; simply don't claim membership in the first place. Between that, and the fact that every MRA we've had here has been monumental amounts of trouble, I see no reason with telling them to GTFO. Likewise with you. One-post-wonder, I bet, registered just to flame the admins for some reason. You probably saw this from some reddit or something, or were pointed to it by some MRA group, and don't even realize that Eclipse Phase is the name of the game, not the studio that produced it. I think we may need manual account activation for a bit. Sad day, but if this is just the tip of the iceberg...

@ kilvehk
@ kilvehk This isn't a problem with gender equality. This is a problem with people not being civil or not treating others with respect. This is an issue of people showing up with a bigoted points of view and trying to bash us with these views until we agree with them, we stay quiet, or leave this site all together. This has been a problem going on for a while. The MRA people who show up are frequent offenders in this regard. They mix in concerns that a decent person would think are important with bigoted points of view and toxic politics. They make a minefield using this stuff, making these forums not fun and has thus scarred away good people. We are taking a firm stance on this issue, telling certain kinds of people to go away, because we don't want to be treated the way they treat us. If we can't have a place where we can hang out and have fun, there is little reason to keep these forums up an running.

no not a one post wonder
yeah it pissed me off to see this because the admins are lumping a group together. rather than saying look if you are being offensive we will ban you they singled out a group of people based on the actions of a few not all people in that group are guaranteed to behave as such. it would be like some guy hanging a sign on the door of his shop saying no muslims allowed because a few muslims were always bad mouthing christianity in his shop. it is a bigoted standpoint to take. and no you can't choose to be black or not but why should that stop you from standing up for all human rights rather than just black rights? all im saying is don't say you are going to ban an entire group for speaking their mind but rather if they are being bigoted. my problem is not with the banning of members but rather the blanket standpoint being taken. ps. no i did not find this on some thread somewhere a friend mentioned the game to me so i decided to come take a look read the home page didn't find a ton of information so i came to the forums to dig for more.

You guys are awesome
I've been a fan of every product you've put out. Every time I hear about a policy of yours I become a fan of it too. You guys are a great company that makes great products. As soon as I have money I'll make a point of buying something. (EDIT: There's a Fate conversion coming out, of course there is. It's like you people read my mind.) As this is my first post this next part is probably going to make me seem like a sockpuppet or shill, oh well. This is mostly for people who are confusing "care's about issues in our society which affect men" and "MRAs". There are legitimate issues where patriarchy hurts men (although I think technically it's kyriarchy then). You can believe in and hate these issues even on this forum (I'm not a mod but I'm pretty sure this is going to work). Watch: I think that the draft is sexist and unfair. I think that the incarceration rates for men are abhorrent or that prison rape is a terrifying epidemic that no one seems to care about. I think that because of patriarchal macho culture male survivors of rape and domestic violence face a very specific sort of mockery and derision which prevents them from getting help. I believe all of these things. I expect I am not going to be banned from the forums. I will also bet a million internet dollars that I won't get warned for this post. The "Men's Rights Movement" and "Men's Right's Acvitists" as a movement are concerned with none of those things. They exist only to do as much damage to women as possible. http://wehuntedthemammoth.com/ is a site which catalogues and draws attention to the assholes who have taken over the terms MRA and MRM. Sadly those terms are lost to us. Probably forever.

Amada, well said. As one of the principles of Posthuman I agree. And I'd like to elaborate (though here not as part of Posthuman but as a sociologist and criminologist). In my non-posthuman life I actually teach about a lot of these issues and what we (social scientists) usually call these are issues of hegemonic or toxic masculinity, terms developed by Michael Messner and Michael Kimmel. Many of the legitimate issues affecting men like sexual violence, homophobia, increased mortality risk due to avoidance of medical care, and a tendency to see violence as a problem solving tool are not issues of 'rights' but of socialization. These are not issues that need legislative or legal protections or solutions but rather cultural and behavioral. In fact making rights-claims and using rights frames on these issues forces them into the kind of zero-sum "If you gain I lose" rhetoric that is often seen around these issues. And there is actually some validity to this, if I think I have a 'right' to be the kind of masculine ideal man (able to use instrumental violence, control of others' sexuality, completely and always agentic in social situations) then the legal establishment of protections for groups that have not traditionally enjoyed protections from my traditional behaviors does reduce my 'rights', but only in the sense that my former 'rights' were actually predicated on a lack of equality for other groups. At the root though it is the socialization I have undergone, that says I have a 'right' to these things, that is the problem. No one has an inalienable right to be placed in a position of superiority over another. When you lose that position it may look to you like you're losing a right, but really all that's happening is a swing on the part of society towards equal protection for all.

It sounds to me that you believe exactly the same as one of the "leaders" of the MRM believes. Which is the same as I believe, and I'm MRA. “I am a men's liberationist (or "masculist") when men's liberation is defined as equal opportunity and equal responsibility for both sexes. I am a feminist when feminism favors equal opportunities and responsibilities for both sexes. I oppose both movements when either says our sex is THE oppressed sex, therefore, "we deserve rights." That's not gender liberation but gender entitlement. Ultimately, I am in favor of neither a women's movement nor a men's movement but a gender transition movement.” ― Warren Farrell, The Myth of Male Power

Since the only answer I can get is from somebody who admits to not being "a PS+" person, I think that's a sign that I'm not welcome. I suppose I won't be supporting the company then... thankfully, the games are all free online, so I can still check them out. I really think this could have been handled better by taking a note from another RPG-focused forum I frequent that simply bans real-world political discussions, wholesale.

Not exactly. And I apologize to Lorsa and the other mods for making their lives harder after we said we'd not engage on this. I'll put this in, and if the mods need to delete it, or any other parts of this thread, to keep the peace so be it, but I wanted to offer clarification on, at least my, stance here. As I said not exactly. I don't believe that men, as a group, have valid rights claims. I do believe, because there is overwhelming empirical research I see every day in scores of journals, that women, as well as many other minority groups, do not have or enjoy the same level of equality in any number of issues (employment, education, sexuality, politics, and religion for a few examples) and that these groups are well justified in making legal, rights-based, claims in the courts, and legislatively, to secure these rights because they are currently being denied them. Not, as the courts have often found, in a de jure manner, though occasionally this happens, but in a de facto manner where we have established norms that allow for, and in some cases reward, discriminatory practices by one group against another. In this case, yes, absolutely, there is an oppressed group, an oppressed sex, and they are well within their rights to make claims to secure those rights. So no, this is not a manner of equivalence. This is a matter of justice. And in this case the preponderance of concern for those seeking justice should lie with those groups that have traditionally lacked access and equality, and who continue to lack full access and equality.

I picked up Eclipse Phase when it first came out in print, as I'm a big fan of the genre, and like the going with the CC license and such, but I really haven't followed it much since. It is a reason to pick up a game because of several factors. One of the best ways to show support for something a company is doing is to buy their stuff. Game companies are some of the best-positioned agents of change in the gaming community at large. The content of a game may be influenced by the attitudes of consumers, but at the end of the day, it's the company that decides what goes into a game, what their policies for their communities are, what is and isn't acceptable in official organized play, and so on. More money means:
 • The more likely a company is to stay in business, keep making more good stuff, and grow its player base.
 • The more likely other companies are to pay attention to what it's doing and emulate it.
 • The more press it and its games are likely to get.
If you're sick of the way women (or any marginalized group) are treated in a particular gaming/fan community, voting with your wallet -- and being clear about what influenced your choice -- is one of the most powerful ways you can support companies who are making an effort to improve the community's treatment of that group. A company's values for their community are often reflected in their material. If you're a woman who likes games, for example, chances are you've had to deal with a lot of games in which the material was very clearly communicating that your primary purpose in their world is to be decorative. You may put up with material that suggests that your proper place is clinging worshipfully to the leg of a musclebound dude, because you love gaming and that game is what other people are willing to play with you, or you like everything else about the system. You may homebrew your own version that is less egregious. Or you may go search for better options. A company that draws a clear line in the sand about not tolerating misogyny in their community is also signaling that their materials probably don't involve automatic strength penalties and charisma bonuses for female characters. But most importantly: There's no One Right Way to get into a particular game or genre. Maybe you try a particular RPG because that's what your friends invite you to play with them. Maybe it's because you liked the cover art. Maybe it's because you heard there's a super-cool mechanic that you're curious to try. Maybe you found the rulebook at a garage sale for $2 and thought, "Why not?" Maybe it's because one of your friends worked on it. Maybe there was a demo at a store or convention. Maybe it's because you liked the name. Maybe it's because you liked the setting. And maybe it's because you heard the company did something cool and that made you interested in the things they make. All of these are legitimate reasons to try out a game. Attempting to be a gatekeeper is counterproductive.

This will be my last post
I've kept my MRA leanings to myself on this thread because I knew how unpopular they were here. Frankly I never understood the MRAs who *have* posted there views here. I myself have never received a single warning from mods and I challenge anyone to find a post that I've made here that was inflammatory or hateful in any respect. But you can't fire me from being a EP fan any more than Joss Whedon can fire me from being a Buffy fan. I will not frequent these forums any longer since you've made it clear I am unwelcome here for associating with a group of people that I do not even always agree with. I too found the absurdly long pro MRA post on the last page to be tedious and not worth reading. Alas many MRAs *are* like that. Frankly I don't see how my political leanings in this matter are relevant to this forum and would have been very in favor of banning the topic of gender politics, at least from the General/Homebrew sections. I also support feminists such as Christina Hoff Summers and Camilia Paglia who I feel have taken men's issues more seriously. I'm familiar with Patriarchy/Kyarchy theory. And I would have been happy to have a restrained, unemotional discussion with any feminist on this board with regards to how we could be allies and the areas of gender equality I feel are lacking enough to warrant a men's movement. Sadly this is no longer possible. I would like to add that I first became aware of trans-issues due to my involvement in the Men's Movement and now consider myself a trans-ally. (And you'll find numerous transpeople and homosexuals in /r/MensRights) I will continue to play EP and enjoy the game. Thank you for creating such a wonderful place to discuss futurist concepts and transhumanism. I hope you will continue to do good work and look forward to all your future releases. Thanks again, PS Like every other MRA I know about, I condemn and abhor Elliot Rodgers actions. The 4 men and 2 women he killed were innocent and did not deserve to die. I hope that such a tragedy will never happen again, though sadly I think that transhumanism itself is the only way we will get to that point. We MUST change human nature for the better. It's really our only hope as a species.
The end really is coming. What comes after that is anyone's guess.

I'm happy to see the MRAs go.
I'm happy to see the MRAs go. It was quite annoying that if a topic discussed involved a woman, it would get derailed into a general bashing of women. In my opinion being annoyed by someone's opinion isn't it itself a valid grounds to ban them, but really, there's little reasonable about the MRA. They’re not about equality, they seem to be mostly either chauvinists or bitter men lashing out. Here in Denmark I honestly have a very hard time seeing any area where “men’s rights” are somehow in trouble. Sure there are gender roles in society, and in some areas that don’t work in men’s favor, but that’s certainly not a rights issue, if it even is an issue at all. You have to look at the balance of it, after all. And any actual issues men might be facing should be dealt with from a platform other than the MRAs – they’re carrying around so much baggage that you shouldn’t want to identify with them in any way.

I'll just leave the following link to an old Eliezer Yudkowsky text, and it would make me very happy if people gave it a look: Every Cause Wants To Be A Cult
Cool link, but just because I have an EP shrine with a picture of the Posthuman Studios Quadrality surrounded by wreathes of glowing fibre optics doesn't mean its a cult—right?

A reminder
Just a reminder this thread is not for convincing the PS+ team of anything. Either you agree with their position and are welcome here. And you can tell the PS+ team as much. or You have questions and concerns about their position and the PS+ team will answer you if they have the time. or You are an MRA and the decision has been made. Your attitudes have been proven to be poison to this community and you can post on your own forums about "How you're not misogynistic but...." If anyone responds to anyone other then a PS+ person in this thread. I'm going to be handing out soft warnings. And if you are new and wondering who the PS+ guys are then they are: Rob Adam Jack and Kylleran Kindalas

This is a move that I fully support
The MRA movement has become an ideology of hate, and I am glad you are rid of them.

Signing in for the first time
Signing in for the first time in a while just because I heard about this (via tumblr). This is great. It is always so encouraging to see a group or company take an official stand against hate. ^_^

...aaaand I'm back. I was gone for a while for personal reasons, and when I wanted to come back I saw a lot of this crap and didn't want to come back. Now that there's a policy of actually excising MRAs from amongst us, this is one happy nonbinary trans anarcha-feminist.

Most of your post is only tangential to MRA so I would recommend the off-topic forum Especially since this thread is not meant for discussion.

Authority
Far be it from me to argue with authority. Edit: Hey, no need to thank me. Sometimes I do things other than bash people over the head with my inflated sense of moral superiority and pick fights with mods. :-)

Kudos
Just wanted to chime in as well to say kudos to the EP team for making this decision. I teach a Rhetoric of Hate Speech class, and we regularly study MRAs as an example of how misogyny expresses itself in contemporary language. They deliberately skirt the borders of acceptable discourse, testing the limits of whatever venue they happen to be crashing at the moment. The only way to put a stop to them is precisely this kind of action. Sure, it feeds into their persecution complex, but so does pretty much everything. I've just gone ahead and made several EP purchases on DriveThruRPG. Keep up the good work and the great game!

Very much in favor
Very much in favor of this policy. And I also really appreciate you (the team) being openly feminist. This means a lot to me. I mean, I wasn't surprised, given EP's leaning toward more progressive stances on identity and gender, but I'm very, very pleased. Now excuse me, I believe I still have a few EP books left to purchase in hardcover...

Thank you!
Thank you! There's a reason no one sane considers him- or herself a "white's-rights-activist", and it's sad that "men's-rights-activists" can't or are not willing to see why there's a problem with what they are trying to do.

Hurray for PS+!
I was throw aback a few months ago when I saw the forum inundated by those MRA. Strike them, strike them hard with the banhammer! I want my good old forum were we discussed transhumanism and technology and didn't delve into retro-medieval chauvinist imagery.
