Olympics in EP
So for a future arc of my campaign, I'm thinking I'm going to send my players to the space Olympics! My thinking is this: it's 10 years after the Fall, and the PC wants to show that it's in control and that humanity can move forward while still honoring the traditions of the past. So it decides to restart the Olympic Games. Except instead of athletes from each nation competing, it's athletes from each habitat/station. My question to the forum is this: where do you think the PC would decide to hold these games? I'm assuming that, since it would want to make a spectacle out of this, the PC would probably build a domed shelter somewhere to host the events. I'm torn between having it take place on Mars (because of the Red Eden project and trying to make Mars the new home of transhumanity) or on Luna (in sight of Earth and in memory of all who were lost, etc.) Mars seems more logical, but Luna more emotional. What do you guys think?

Re: Olympics in EP
There was a thread about this a few months ago: http://eclipsephase.com/af10-olympics If the PC hosts the games they would rather do it on Mars, I don't think they would want to promote the LLA too much.

Thanks
Man, I even did a search for "Olympics" because I didn't want to make a repeat topic. Thanks for the link.

Logically, I think any
Logically, I think any olympics, in honor of the times past, should be set at a habitat large enough to rotate with a speed that generates earth gravity. The big problem is that almost all sports in the olypmics is pointless for transhumanity to measure themselves in, the only sports that are decent are those requiring more skill than muscle / stamina. With enough money to buy a decent morph and the right implants, anyone is a marathon winner...

At the real Olympics
At the real Olympics everybody is issued their equipment instead of bringing their own, I think. The athletes in 10 AF might have to sleeve into morphs given to them by the hypecorp sponsor of the event. This way only your skill counts, and despite skillsofts this is one of the most valued aspects of a person in EP, if not _the_ most valued.

That's kind of what I was
That's kind of what I was thinking. People would be given flats to sleeve in to (or splicers at the very most) to level the playing field.

Splicers. All the Splicers
Splicers. All the Splicers would add to the same aptitude, to keep it level. If really smart, to keep it about their learned skill, the aptitude would be something like COG or SAV, and not one of the 'physical' ones. I only say splicers over flats because most flats still belong to the person BORN into it, and they might not be keen on sharing yet. And the medical software in the mesh inserts of a splicer is good for tracking the status of the competitors to make sure they are not using enhancement drugs.

There is going to be debate
There is going to be debate about the "right" gravity, and presumably one should distinguish between running in Venus/Earth gravity, Mars gravity and microgravity (not to mention the throwing games). So I think the PC would have parts of the games in different evironments - a lot on mars, but some parts on space stations with the right gravity. Still, expect complaints about the wrong Coriolis force etc.

I'm thinking that the games
I'm thinking that the games would be held in a toroidal station spun to 1 G, probably one specially constructed just for the games. Splice morphs make sense -- no real physical upgrades, but they could be given implants to track their health stats/make sure they're not taking drugs. However, that doesn't mean that some people won't try to hack the inserts.

I think the morph would vary
I think the morph would vary based on the event, with different hypercorps donating the morphs for the events. Every morph in each event has to be the same to make it about the athlete instead of the morph, but I don't think they'll choose splicers -- the PC isn't _just_ going to do this as a symbol of transhuman unity, after all, they're going to jump at the chance to use the games as advertisements for their latest and greatest morph lines. I'd expect Olympians to be the default morph for most of the events, though, with some being run in Exalts, and it wouldn't be uncommon for events on Mars to use Alpiners.

I completely disagree about
I completely disagree about the morphs in question. I believe each competitor would show up in a custom Biomorph. Probably based on the Olympian, but modified to excel at their competition. Why? Because these games celebrate Transhuman achievement, not just human achievement anymore. Part of that is morphological adaptation. Choosing the right mods for your morph will be as important to these games as proper diet and training regimen are to the modern version. Also, people simply won't care unless we're looking at the actual peak of transhuman potential. It doesn't matter if running a 4 minute mile is a huge achievement for a splicer, if the average Olympian morph could achieve the same feat without training. And yes, Hypercorporate sponsors would desperately want to put together the perfect morph to show off their skills, and enjoy the profits as thousands of customers request the Usain Bolt model custom Olympian morph. That said, it would almost certainly be restricted to Biomorphs. Synthmorphs are simply to machine-like to seem true to the spirit of the games, especially because they have options that would grant them too great an advantage in many competitions. Without this restriction the 100m dash becomes the Indy 500. Bioconservatives will pitch a fit when a custom morph with cheetah DNA wins the 100m dash, and when the swimmers look more like mermaids than Humans. But outside the Jovian Junta, they're don't have the clout to trump the points above. They'll probably have their own "Pure Human only" Olympics. And to most transhumans will be a bit of a joke, like the Special Olympics are to many people today. As to Gravity, I expect to see specific contests suited to the most common types. The Hundred Meter dash will probably have 1G, Mars G, Lunar G and Zero G versions run by different competitors. I'm more interested in the new categories we'll see. Zero-G gymnastics, for example, or the freerunning course, or lunar Flying.

A really good point
That's a really good point, Anarchitect. If the pinacle of human performance is whatever transhumanity can engineer it to be, why not go that route? I think hypercorps would want to not only honor the spirit of the games, but also put on the best show possible. They would want to create superstar athletes (for the merchandising, of course). The people in the EP future would probably rather see modified Olympians running a mile in two minutes than a bunch of Splicers trying to do it.

I'm not sure about that one. I think, wherever it's held, most of the games would have uniform gravity, where gravity is needed. But some Zero G events would definitely be interesting, and I could definitely picture different Zero G gymnastics events.

One of the problems with
One of the problems with doping today is the "spirit of sport" argument: we want to see interesting sports, sports that in some sense is meaningful (the other arguments about fairness and health are less relevant here). People do not want to see human achievement replaced by tools, and hence the debates about shark-skin swimsuits and whether Pistorius is bad for running. Yet we are also fascinated by doing things in more extreme ways, even if they are very technical - people do like to watch Formula 1 or monster truck racing, despite the driver being relatively unimportant compared to his engineering team. A nice solution to this is to have every sport declare a "mission statement": what it actually is about. From this one can see what enhancements or tools make sense. If running is all about human-style bipedal running uplifts, synthmorphs and pneumatic limbs are out, but it might be OK with olympians with really boosted leg musculature. And so on. One might even invent new sports that fit with new kinds of bodies, like ones that benefit from the precision and tirelessness of synthmorphs.

I'd say that there are
I'd say that there are probably multiple versions of the events, depending on what you're looking for.

I can see this version absolutely. All other things being absolutely equal, who is the best? When you win this, you know you won it, that your Ego was the only difference between you and every other person competing. If you're an athlete, this is the ultimate test.

Show off all the concept morphs that will never make it into production. See the new features that will be in next year's model. Try to get funding for your new muscle linkage system. It's about seeing how far you can go with the designs while still keeping to the rules. Auto show meets NASCAR, very cool.

I like the synthesis of concepts here, and would be really interested to see what new sports would come out of this. An anything-goes marathon with wheels, jets, legs, and whatever else will move you forward? Shot-put where with cannon arms or trebuchets made of muscle and sinew? Just go nuts. Deeply disturbing to bioconservatives, massively entertaining for Scum and other @-net members.
