Meanwhile, back on Earth...
After various shenanigans, the PCs in my Eclipse Phase campaign have ended up on Earth. Following instructions by Firewall, they have gone to Hobart, Tasmania to try and repair a former Egocasting facility for future operations. In the area, they have encountered a small group of human survivors, but those people are scared of them and largely try to stay away (though the PCs are attempting to help them anyway by using their fabbers to create useful stuff). They have also found the egocasting facility, taken out a minor exurgent infestation inhabiting it, and done a quick survey of the facilities which has led them to believe that they can repair the facility with their resources. So... what happens next? I need ideas, especially spectacularly ones, as I will move to another city soon and want to end the campaign in a noteworthy way - and since I've spent most of the week with paperwork and apartment hunting, I haven't had much opportunity to think of something useful for tomorrow's game. Any challenges to the party should preferably not be purely combat-oriented, as it is hard to balance these against the party - one member is a combat-focused twinked-out synthmorph played by the resident guy with munchkin tendencies, and another is a swarmoid AI with in-built pacifism. Any suggestions?

Ah, Tasmania. One of my favourite locations for discussing surviving existential risks (remote, temperature moderated by ocean, agrarian infrastructure, geologically stable etc.) It is not a too bizarre location for a seed vault, biobank or some other disaster readiness installation... which might become a marvellous temptation. The PCs might find out that there is some pre-Fall survival installation not too far away, and it might contain real goodies - advanced equipment, uninfected files, weapons, lost genetic samples, cryonically suspended VIPs, whatever. Of course their main mission is entirely separate from this. But it is a tempting possible target, especially if they are already in the neighbourhood and have done the main task. The real problem is that it is a honeypot. Something nasty and *smart* has seeded the information about the installation just to catch this type of explorers. It just waits for them to come into its trap, just like a spider. The installation might have been real but was taken over long ago. Now it is the staging area of the entity. It might want explorers in order to study them in cruel experiments, or in order to hack their minds and send them back as infiltrators. Or it just politely offers them their wildest dreams in exchange for minor help...

That is an interesting idea. As it happens, the synthmorph was originally an octopus uplift, and he has plans to (ab)use the facility for his plans to create a major waterworld colony for his kind, away from the control of the Planetary Consortium. Furthermore, he has sent the word out to his peers that they should prepare for establishing one Very Soon, as he has found a suitable candidate for colonization (and so far, few other people know of it - and all of them are members of Firewall). It is not inconceivable that some of his peers might stumble across this information (he has above 90 in @-rep). So, what kind of data - tools could be of major interest to this character? Preferably not information on octopus uplift, as he has already asked about that and I said that no facilities are nearby (the closest one is in Queensland).

The post-octopus (Lovecraft joke omitted) wants data and tools to help make his water world colony project a success. First, the colonists must survive on their new home. I xpect having a a broad metagenomic sample of post-Fall ocean biomes (intertidal, pelagic, benthic, and coral reefs too) would give the new colony a wide range of known sturdy organisms to serve as a starter kit for or "oceanusforming" their new home. Samples of or blueprints for subsurface marine tools not needed in the wholly artificial environments off-Earth would also help the colony. Second, the project will take funding. Any data he can sell to Reclaimers, especially if that data also meets the colony's future needs, has value. Third, the post-octopus might want to find people lost during the Fall. It might have lost creche-mates, or researchers in the uplift programs, or even people valuable only for their knowledge involving the previous two reasons. So...have your post-octopus PC seek out the XP, mindfile, or cortical stack, etc. of a famous ocean scientist (marine biologist, shipwright, explorer) who met their end during the early days of the Fall. The remains lie somewhere at sea (on the seabed?), in the wreckage of the research vessel. Apply stereotypes of ghost ships and sunken treasure to taste. THE FLYING DUTCHMAN SAVED JACQUES COUSTEAU'S BRAIN IN DAVY JONES'S LOCKER! That's probably a little over the top, but you get the idea.

If I might suggest something completely different... Orbital Bombardment. In X hours (set the time to give the most tension) the Moon is going to launch a mass driver attack on their location because of suspected TITAN activity nearby. The PC's then have to face a difficult choice: run for the hills and lose their hard won facility, try and egocast out and likewise lose the facility, try to relocate the suspected TITAN activity so the mass driver doesn't destroy the facility, talk the Moon out of actually firing a shot or aiming at a different location, perhaps creating the illusion of a more important target, move the important parts of the facility to safety... etc. You could then use the TITAN activity to interrupt what ever the PC's plan and to give the combat monster something to fight... or perhaps have the suspected TITAN activity actually be the survivors using the technology the PC's gave them (depending on what they did give them), which only looks like TITAN activity to orbital scans or even the PC's themselves. Also, you could insert a moral dilemma: do the PC's try to save the survivors or put themselves first?

I thought so as well, until I learned about Tiger Snakes that infest the island... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_snake I prefer Marquesas Islands myself for end of the world sanctuary these days(while they are vulnerable to Tsunami, the have high elevation that can be used). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marquesas_Islands The Tiger Snakes might be actually a good idea-perhaps pre-Fall a company experimented with shared intelligence and used enhanced Tiger Snakes as guards on compound, which led them to develop after years some form of rudimentary gestalt intelligence?

Underwater colonization and engineering sounds like something that might attract an industrial cluster. Suppose there was an installation devoted to undersea industry and manufacturing in the Bass Strait? It might have emerged from the oil and gas fields there today, then converted into a facility ("Bassplex") both supplying equipment to other undersea facilities around Australia and researching new technologies. This would have been well equipped and full of very useful data - everything from genetic samples and cutting-edge biotech to robotics to advanced hydrodynamics control devices. Of course, it was just on top of the Basslink major fiber optics trunk, so some TITAN also quickly took over and made it into its lair. Now it rests under the stormy waves, waiting for prey...

Something akin to the plot of Falling Skies pilot would be nifty: evacuate civilians from a compromised camp as TITAN toys are nearing them. Add to this that they recognize some relative of theirs among the flesh puppet soldiers. Will they stick with the survivor group or try and free their relatives? Another interesting plot hook for Fall Evacuees would be returning to their hometown. Having flashbacks of the days before the Fall... except those flashbacks are caused by a basilic hack that hit them the moment they entered the town, which is now an exsurgent nest and inhabited by an entity who like to study emotion relative to pain, and She had run out of test subject. Until that moment, it had been a triumph. She made notes here and there: huge success (news E-papers, newsfeed, blogs). it was hard for her to overstate her satisfaction. And she'd do anything to experience that again...with the players. Really, she's GLaD they're here! And if you feel really vicious, there is fresh made cake at the bakery, infested with some nasty exsurgent strain. As the saying goes, the cake is a lie!

Re: Meanwhile, back on Earth...
Update: The characters have now taken out an Australian government shelter intended to eventually resettle the Earth but which got taken over by the exurgent virus, thus gaining access to its vast store of supplies which will help immensely with the octopi colonization effort. Some octopus allies have started preparing for the big push through the Antarctica gate, and things seem to be progressing smoothly. Now the three characters have somewhat different projects they want to work in in the coming weeks: - The octopus wants to visit his old haunts in Scandinavia to extract old uplift information from his former research center. - The informorph swarmoid wants to go to Hawaii, as it has uncovered data hinting at a "prototype gate" built by the TITANs on Hawaii (the first prototype was built in Chicago, but never finished). - The resident Lost async/complete sociopath meanwhile has 570 cryogenically frozen people which are likely all infected with the same strain of basilisk hack exurgent virus - and thus, he plans to do a little "research" on them to learn more about basilisk hacks in general. So, any ideas for those three plot threads? Any additional ideas how I can make them overlap without making it too contrived?

Re: Meanwhile, back on Earth...
A few ideas: -In Hawaii there is a "prototype gate," intended by the TITANs as a way to move bulk cargo around. It may have limited range (IE, only other parts on the surface of Earth for some reason, or perhaps it needs additional modifications to work like a "standard" Pandora gate). -It takes you to Scandinavia (or must be programmed to), and perhaps the research center holds some facilities or data that the async could use to facilitate their research (perhaps some parts of the Human Cognome Project there, related to the Uplift program). -A related note might be transporting subjects, if the async wants to. Maybe they could salvage an old freighter or something like that. Whether it fits through the gate, well, that's another story... -The Gate may additionally wake up some of the cryogenically frozen subjects, or perhaps it is near some nasty TITAN remnants or artifacts that do it. -The async research may grant them a method of interfacing with the TITAN tech on the prototype gate, making it work like a more conventional one, or perhaps at least working as an escape off planet. However, what is waiting on the other side might be a fun thing to consider...
