Sentinel Day Jobs/Cover Stories
Firewall Sentinels aren't expected to spend all their times on Firewall jobs - they usually have some sort of "day job" where they work most of the time. Ideally, such a job should give them both an excuse to gather all sorts of interesting and relevant information, and be flexible enough that they can excuse themselves on a short notice whenever Firewall calls. And to maintain plausibility, it's often a good idea if the jobs of the sentinels in a group are connected so that nobody raises an eyebrow if they spend a lot of time together. We are about to start an Eclipse Phase campaign set primarily in the cities of Mars, and are trying to figure out just such day jobs for the group - so I am curious what other people have come up with for their games. What I am looking for in particular is something that would allow the PCs to pursue their own goals in addition to those of Firewall and provide for plenty of interesting role-playing...

Re: Sentinel Day Jobs/Cover Stories
My sentinal character on Fresh Kills is a Vacworker/Tug Pilot. Firewall tapped him becaus he's in a good position to see who's comming and going and he's also got some history with Sugali Ali. My sentinal character on Kronos Cluster is a Triad lieutenant and involved in software piracy. Firewall uses him to watch over what kind of sofware is comming through the cluster and make sure none of the really dangerous sutf ever gets out. Those two have day jobs and firwall has chosen them specificaly because of the positions they're in. But I'm writing a story about 2 characters who are working 'full time' for firewall trying to infiltrate the more militant elements of the barsoomian movement as undercover ops. I'm pretty sure that Firewall works alot like the CIA/KGB in that they find people who are in the right place at the right time and turn them into operateives.

Mea Culpa: My mode of speech can make others feel uninvited to argue or participate. This is the EXACT opposite of what I intend when I post.

Re: Sentinel Day Jobs/Cover Stories
I have had a few fairly well developed characters in my games with decent day jobs, a quick list: CodeBreaker - My current character is currently employed as a prototype Morph tester for a small Hypercorp (Qel'Thyr Industries), which I represent with a Patron trait and sometimes having access to the shiny, shiny custom Morphs that they have smuggled away on a few Habs. It was the easiest way for my GM to let me integrate my custom Morphs without having to explain why they are not all that widespread. Bishop – One of my friends old characters (He got deaded, for good). He worked as a P.I out of one of the Martian cities. In a System where information is power, and intrigue and sneakiness is paramount I imagine a well trained and skilled P.I could make a mint. Fit well with his skills and backstory as well. Daelphy – My Sisters old mess-about character, she worked as an Escort (ಠ_ಠ ) on Venus. Everyone needs some lovin', even in a post scarcity world! Orion – Another friends character, he worked as a high-end carpenter who made all the nice shiny Oak tables that the Hypercorp Elite types seem to love so much. In a time when anyone can get something printed out of the Maker, I would think that a product made with dedication and hard work would be valued. It doesn't matter what you have, it matters where it comes from.

I am fairly sure that is indeed the case. The Spoilers section seems to suggest that basically anyone could potentially become a Sentinal, as long as they have some skill that Firewall might find even the slightest bit useful. Also I imagine they are quite hungry for the odd types, and the Psi users. Easier to keep them from killing everyone if they are working for you.

In my game we have: A MITRE psychophysiology researcher. A retired jovian special ops colonel. A famous pop idol (and spoilt hypercorp heiress).

Re: Sentinel Day Jobs/Cover Stories
My gaming group involves: Jasper Warren III, philanthropist hypercorp scion who promotes the latest and coolest good causes. Gives a very good cover for showing up almost anywhere and tends to distract from what some members of the entourage does. Little Viper, ex-Chinese military materiel (a pretty advanced swarmanoid/nanofog). Main cover doctor/morph designer, but also does nanoprogramming. Jasper and Viper recently forked, and now have two independent alphas involved in Gatecrashing and monitoring the shady groups supporting it. Jasper Bis is a psychosurgery reviewer for Extropia Medical Journal, and Viper Bis is a freelance software security expert for a subsidary of Medusan Shield. Sam Spade, super-networking P.I. One of those people who also seem to have a legit reason to show up everywhere. Kemal Osman, ex-Jovian Republic logistics expert. Sensitive to political trouble he managed to defect to the autonomists via Firewall, selling sensitive information from the military-industrial complex. Currently does logistics planning for Phelan's Recourse (anarchists need a lot of logistics, they just don't want to admit it). Patrick Chekala, Tanzanian lobbyist. Represents the uploaded nation of Tanzania, tries to get it embodied in the right way. Not a Firewall agent, but got entangled in Warren's schemes. Another character was a University of Putingrad (Luna) engineering professor specialized in nanoconstruction, a social engineer working as a marketer (with prostitution as a hobby), and a mercenary (an increasingly thin cover for being part of a Firewall nuke-the-site-from-orbit team).

Re: Sentinel Day Jobs/Cover Stories
My only character was a corporate infiltrator from Morning star who had a series of false identities across the system. His day job wasn't much different then his job as a firewall operative and since in the course of his work multiple false identities were set up for him it made getting around a lot easier.

In my game we had: -An uplifted housecat who works as an ego hunter. -An economic hitman who may have been engineered to spec for Firewall. -A hedonistic industrial spy who moonlights as a combat hacker and escort. -A data smuggler specializing in highly illegal XP clips. -A member of the Lost hiding among a band of Ultimates. -The head of the dockworker's guild who preferred neotenic morphs because they could crawl inside of spacecraft engines. -An experimental AGI implementing the fictional character Spider Jerusalem who traveled the solar system as a freelance reporter.

Re: Sentinel Day Jobs/Cover Stories
little question about future jobs what exactly do a social engineer, work wise? how does he or she does his-her job? Also, what's the juridiction of a freelance magistrate, like canon NPC Patrona Vasquez. I must admit that the Nomic stuff really picked my curiosity

Social engineering can either mean the hacker trick of conning people into opening up their security ("Excuse me, ma'am, but we are installing upgrades. Could you please log in to your computer?") or the literal deliberate manipulation of social structures. The latter would involve memetics, marketing, sociology, figuring out how to change institutions or incentive structures to make people do certain things.

Re: Sentinel Day Jobs/Cover Stories
root@Sentinel Day Jobs/Cover Stories [hr] No, a memeticist, a marketer, a sociologist and a hacker might like to call themselves social engineers, but they aren't. They make use of the tools built by social engineers, and they like to flatter themselves with the engineer title, but a professional social engineer is going to be different. They will specialize in social groups, social statics, and social dynamics, which will then have been extrapolated into 4th-order equations to predict feedback loops among simple social constructs. From these base engineering principles, programmatical structures can be built to facilitate or retard these social signals, or modulate them for a specified intent. This can include abusing a workforce to make them work harder, but it will primarily be a tool for empowering democracy. There are a number of social structures that are preferable in all ways for most of the participants, but the attentional cost of living in them is currently too high. Good social engineering programs and devices will help transparency, and will find ways to allow engagement with more of the politics that affect our interests without being a mental burden.
