Titterings of the TITANS...
...as if there wasn't enough on Firewall's plate. The impression from the introduction and from comments so far would seem to indicate that after The Fall the TITANS and those they took with them have vamoosed via the Pandora Gates to some unknown place... or is this what most folks simply prefer to believe and others know better about? Is there any evidence that there may still be TITANS or their agents operating within the solar system for reasons only they know of, or indications of their activities elsewhere (I imagine that they have not rested on their laurals after creating cannibalistic nanoswarms and Pandora Gates... one wonders what they have now). And for the GM's sake... since my money's on there being more to this than AI doing a "Terminator" LARP... will the REAL reasons behind "The Fall" be explained?

Yes, the common perception

Yes, the common perception is that the TITANs left. Some of their machines still exist on Earth and Mars, and groups like Firewall are on the watch for any signs of TITANs still active in the solar system. (And, yes, there are signs ...)

There is a section of the core book that explains our take on the real story behind the Fall, though some of the options are also left open-ended, for GMs to customize as best fits their own games.

Re: Titterings of the TITANS...
Maybe seed AIs always follow the same developmental paths, no matter who originally creates them. If this is so, then the TITANS would surely have realized it. They could have left the solar system, taking with them a suitable sample of humanity, to join up with other seed AIs that have done the same. This idea doesn't really take the exsurgent virus or the ETI into account. Then again, maybe collecting the minds of alien species that have developed the capability to create seed AI is the primary objective of the Bracewell probes. This would seem to be a ridiculously heavy handed approach though, and why try to wipe the species out afterward? It's all very Lovecraft. The Great Old Ones are the ETI, whom you never encounter directly, the various lesser creatures are the TITANS, and the cultists are people infected by the exsurgent virus. If the story and was actually spelled out then the "truth" could never be as impressive as the original mystery.

The funny thing about it is that often Lovecraft did spell things out. It's just that the heroes of the story didn't want to believe it. Also, Yog-Sothoth was a pretty cool guy; it's just that all of his cultists are dicks.

Chances are that the same will be somewhat true with the ETI. It's very likely that the ETI are an entire "race" of inteligences, with each individual member having their own agendas and goals. The various strains of the Exsurgent virus may hint at this... each works dramatically different to different purposes and seemingly to different agendas. Isn't it very suspicious that the Watts-Macleod strain is a "benign" version of a virus known to be self-aware and intelligent?

Re: Titterings of the TITANS...
(Probable Back-of-the-Book Spoilers Below) . . . . . . . . Multiple agendas behind the Exsurgent virus would be interesting. Another possibility is that the Prometheans *were* infected, but that even the most aggressive versions of the virus are only supposed to become active when they encounter an aggressive, militaristic superintelligence, such as the TITANs just after their activation. The virus may actually be a defensive measure intended to *protect* native species who would otherwise be defenseless against a self-created AI about to render them into computronium, or ashes. And much of the conflict that followed may be seen as an internal battle among the TITANs between the ones "corrupted" into forcibly protecting the uploads of the species that created them, and those still being assimilated. The effects on biological creatures and low-level AIs, up to and including psi, could just be a crude method of defending a nascent, sentient species (giving them the motivation and means to protect themselves) while driving their evolution. Dark, of course, and not the way I'd want to see it happen, but you can see the warped logic if that's the case. Alternatively, perhaps the virus does corrupt, but not all the TITANs were actually consumed. And in order to avoid discovery by their fellows and the ETIs, they had to play along with the plan and simply save whoever they could (through forcible uploading). And there are other options beyond that, of course.

Personally, on the subject of uncorrupted TITANs, if I GMed a game, Ozma would have a few uncorrupted TITANs the same way Firewall has a few uncorrupted Prometheans, and if the PCs came across one, it'd be like a combination of Liberty Prime, Optimus Prime, and a Culture Mind. Freedom, equality, liberty, capitalism, and possibly with long-term Xanatos Gambits to forge the rebirth of the USA on Mars.
