Terminus : Nearest Star

it's been ten year now that te Fall ... well fall on us, earth is lost and we have only the star so my friend let's go to the star !
I'm supprise that no hypercorp try to go to alpha centauri, I mean something fishy is behind the pandora gate (the factor said it first) and if we found them to be a X dangers, we will have to find an another solution for the tranhuman going to the nearest star will be hard and i was questionning myself how we will do that I was thinking latest anti-mater propulsion system and state of the art Virtual reality with a bunch of ego in it, cornucopia machine and automated resleeving factory (or not i don't think alpha centauri had any habitable planet) what is causing me a problem is communication capability, the time laps between message will be huge and i don't think egocasting is an option maybe the ship could leave behind some farcasting relay like bread crumps any toughts on how the transhumanity could colonise other system ?

What do you mean a butterfly cause this ? How a butterfly can cause an enviromental system overload on the other side of a 10 000 egos habitat ?

Ah. You see, the issues with a hypercorp trying to colonize Alpha Centauri are manifold, but it all boils down to: Too Damn Far Away. Slower Than Light (STL) seed-ships, with a bunch of stored egos, a few CMs and a big library, and stored genetic material are completely within the realm of the setting. In fact, at least one ship (the ICS-201 CRYSTAL WIND, Rimward, pg 145) is on its way to Barnard's Star. The reason it hasn't been done before by the hypercorps is that it isn't a good investment. A colony that's at the end of an eight year command and control loop isn't a money-maker under just about any circumstances, and that's ignoring the fact that it would take literally decades for the ship to even arrive. Even using the most powerful engines available, anti-matter rockets, isn't cost-effective. Anti-matter rockets are dangerous, expensive and require a fuel that is rather hard to replenish mid-voyage (and, of course, the more matter you're accelerating, the more of that expensive fuel you need). And, even then, at the 0.2 G that anti-matter rockets are capable of, it takes nearly ten years of continuous acceleration, turnover and deceleration (with speed at turnover of 0.9 C!) to arrive--at the cost of enough anti-matter to accelerate the entire seed ship, plus half of its fuel, up to 0.9 C and then back down again. With plasma rockets, it takes nearly 45 years (with continuous acceleration, turnover and deceleration), and with fusion rockets, it takes nearly 20 years (same). So, it's not that such a feat is outside of the technical realm of transhumanity--it just isn't worth the investment of money and time to a capitalistic society. Look at it this way: right now, in 2013, we have the technical capability to have a moonbase of 2000 people, or a high speed tunnel across the Atlantic from New York to London. Why haven't we built these engineering marvels, then? Because, socially, our priorities are directed elsewhere, or we have more cost-effective means available.

yeah ! I understand that
yeah ! I understand that but a Alpha Centauri colony could be a really good way to flee a potentiel X risk or the last extermination because it's goddamn far it's seems that the Titans don't have this type of capaility them save, most likly they disapear with the Pandora Gates and note with faster than light ship so I don't know, it's not a bad idea after all :/

who says they haven't?
Look at it that way Imagine, for example, RNA hadn't made the existence of the Na'vi public knowledge, or use spin doctors and memeticians to discredit any information about it, and maintain a red tape around their activity on Pandora. They would have gotten themselves rid of the native decades prior, and got all the riches and ressources for themselves. Now transpose it to EP setting They send ship there, automated and-or full of indentured workers, plus some AI piloted security synths and pods. They could do whatever they want there, regardless of any law or humane rights as long as their monopoly on the place last. How do they protect it? by keeping the existence of the colony a secret, for as long as possible and don't reveal it existence except on the even of an ELE (Extinction Level Event) Ressources gathered there would either reenforce their capital through black accountin and financiar montage, or question-free built material, conventional weapon, and maybe even less than legal stuff away from prying eyes. "Why go there? too expensive in ressources, there are still plenty Infugees from the Fall who wait to get their body back at the very least. What would you rather see, little Timmy getting retunited with his hard working mother after years of separation, or chasing stars in spaceships -where there are Pandora Gates arrivale for much cheaper?" So while we think and believe it to be fincancially undoable they're over there plotting the end of use game trading and friendly lending through evil, evil DRM! (hoops! wrong hypercorp! my bad!)
