Skill maximums and specializations
I apologize if this was covered somewhere, but I couldn't see it anywhere. So, learned skills cannot go over 80 (90 with expert trait) at character creation. And skills overall have a maximum of 99. How do specializations affect this? If I have a skill with the expert trait, and buy it up to 90, then take a specialization, do I have a 99 in that specialization? Or would it still just cap out at 90? For that matter, if I have a skill above 89, can I even *have* a specialization? I hope this question makes sense... I'm a little sleepy. :)

Specializations are outside of skill level limits. You can max-out a skill and still get an extra plus from a specialization.

Cool. Can you exceed 99 with a specialization?

Re: Skill maximums and specializations
I see a specialization as a modifier. This means that it can puch the target value in excess of 99, just as other modifiers can (like a social skill test from someone with First Impression, Striking Looks 2, and bioware-enhanced pheromones). Note that a roll of 99 is still a failure.

That makes sense. I doubt I'll take it that far anyway. It's mostly an RP kind of thing. I'm making a character who's one of the foremost experts in some tech skill pre-Fall, and now is reinstantiated and sort of changed priorities, more interested in life and people that tech and work. But the info is still very useful. Thanks, guys! :)

So, if your skill was 99 or higher, would that mean that any roll apart from 99 would be a success?

Barring modifiers, yes.

Indeed. It would also mean you start to count your MoS by the higher standard. Thus, if you have a 130 skill (counting modifiers) and roll an 76, your MoS would be 54, instead of only 23 (which would be the case if you had a maximum of 99).

The way my group handled it was all skills capped at 80 at character creation, 90 with the expert trait. Any speciailizations were nothing more than die roll modifiers, they did not add to the skill as it was on the character sheet.

Exactly as it should be handled. Morph modifiers also do not count for purposes of the skill as it is on the character sheet, until after you are finished purchasing and creating your character.
