Simon Templar After The Fall
His! A GM fishing for advice here: One of my players wants to do a PC like the Saint in the EP universe. I was wondering how feasable this would be, with nanofabbers/cornucopia machines, new mode economies, etc. For instance, per the RAW, are nanofabbers/cornucopia machines ubiquitous (wherever the government permits them), or precious few (not sure)? Would this "saint-like" PC be better off trying to steal patents/ideas, instead of real world objects, which could be replicated easily? What skills/traits would work, which wouldn't? Help! I don't want the player to feel like he's created an anachronistic throwback that doesn't work, due to EP's paradigms... Thanks! SF

Valuable objects are still valuable, and for the same reason (authentic rarity). AFAIK. :) It's been a while since I've seen it… he's basically just a freelance spy/thief, right?

My group's campaign was entirely based on the concept of Stealing Other People's Stuff. We've branched out a bit though, to other dubious jobs like assassinations and rescue missions.

He's a bit of everything. Autonomous spy, thief, assassin, infiltrator, saboteur. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Templar Thanks for the input! SF

I think stealing a physical prototype *could* be a financially viable job given the strength and security of common DRM. It might be easier or quicker to reverse engineer a working example than crack DRM.

Mea Culpa: My mode of speech can make others feel uninvited to argue or participate. This is the EXACT opposite of what I intend when I post.

Good point. Reverse engineering has begun to become a fine art. And with hitech methods it can be partially automated: http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.81.4750&rep=rep... http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/S0890-6955(02)00030-5 http://www.pnas.org/content/104/24/9943.short http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1455820 "This is the reveng vat. Drop the device into it and it will scan it on all frequencies, analyse its chemical composition and then pick it apart molecule by molecule. The AIs can handle nearly any technical domain, including high-end tamper-proofing and booby-traps. In fact, see that model over there? That was an armed bomb we dropped into the vat during the Christmas party. It handled that too."

His! 'Scuse my ignorance, "DRM"? Thanks! SF

DRM = Digital Rights Management Essentially it's layer of security that keeps you from doing stuff with the product that you aren't supposed to. Like copying games and uploading it to torrent sites for example.

I'd say things that the publishers don't *want* you to do, instead of 'supposed to'. ;)

With the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, there is little difference between the two these days.

Unless "supposed to" references things of an ethical nature. I think most of us can agree that the DMCA is many things, but ethical isn't one of them.

On this point, many of us do indeed agree.
