I read this article: http://www.damninteresting.com/this-place-is-not-a-place-of-honor (c/o Cracked.com) and thought, well, it's awesome.
Imagine someone detects extremely high rates of neutrino radiation on an exoplanet. People speculate it might be an alien relic - or maybe a weapon. Firewall wants to get there first and figure out if it's an x-threat, so they dispatch the gatecrashers. Climbing the tallest hill, they find it's covered with massive, black thorns formed directly from the natural rock. The whole area heats up dangerously under the sun, and the hot wind shakes the dust from their suits with an eery howling. Still, they have a job to do, and they don't get paid for slacking around, so they start blasting their way into the side of the mountain, hoping some alien artifacts fall out. That's when the REALLY weird stuff starts to happen...

Re: Setting Idea: Exoplanet Relics & Poisoning your PCs for Fun
Sort of reminds me (tangentially) of the excited diggers in 'Matter' by Iain M. Banks.
"Ooh!!! lets dig out this super-exciting, weird ancient artefact... what could possibly go wrong?"
