An article about a net for robots. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-25727110 From the article: "A world wide web for robots to learn from each other and share information is being shown off for the first time." and "The aim of the system is to create a kind of ever-changing common brain for robots." They also mention criticism: "Author James Barrat, who has written extensively about the dangers of robots gaining their own intelligence, thinks there need to be safeguards."

Remember robots, DON'T READ
Remember robots, DON'T READ THE COMMENTS! While I agree it needs safeguards, it's more because we need to incorporate those safeguards now, while the system is in its infancy, than because of any sort of immediate threat. (I'm speaking from the POV of watching the computer industry struggle to incorporate security four decades after the fact.)

Even without any intelligence
Even without any intelligence explosion imminent there are good reasons to have safeguards. Consider a system where robots can share tasks: "Object 0xA58E is too heavy for me, could anybody move it to location 45.55,54.21,-11.00?" Sounds quite useful, until a smart thief sends that command and waits for the domestic bot to deliver your TV to the door, or the drugs to the hospital loading bay. A robot is a potential accomplice to a lot of crimes. "The victim was found stabbed in the back, alone in a room locked from the inside, in a building the security cameras showed had not been approached by anybody for several days. That did not surprise the police inspector: as always, the butlerbot had done it. But what did confuse her was that the house system did not have a landline or wireless connection to the net. She had a locked system case."
