Unfortunately -- sample character sections are expensive, as every single page needs an illustration. We didn't include them in Rimward for this reason, and doing a standalone PDF/POD release of them would almost certainly be cost-prohibitive for us. We've been tossing around ideas internally as to how they could be done in the future, though, as we know there's demand for them.
Well, thank you for the response sir. The important thing is that you wrote an awesome book that brings to life the most evocative part of the setting, and now I can close my eyes whenever I want and pretend I live in Locus among the Anarchists. And then I remember that your fictional universe also contains TITANS and ETI's and I quickly think of something else.

how about asking the talented fans? sadly I can't draw well enough anymore, but I'm sure some would draw in exchange of a free dead tree version of a book or two, or with wages lower than the usual top professional. I'm not saying making an habit of it, but it would be saving you bucks, and give the chance for amateurs or semi-pros to get some professional spotlight Ask on the forum and on DA, I'm sure you could find volunteers here's a few from Deviant Arts that would do perfectly; Pricilla (sample http://priscillia.deviantart.com/gallery/3911481#/d4em14q) Kvlticon (DA Gallery http://kvlticon.deviantart.com/) Class 34 (DA Gallery http://class34.deviantart.com/ Itrixia (DA Gallery http://itrixia.deviantart.com/) There are tons others just waiting out there ^^ Oh and note that Itrixia is already getting familiar with EP, drawing an adventure illustration for me. I share my dropbox EP folder with her for quicker reference and to spread EP meme)

We're always on the lookout for new artists, but paying some artists $X and some artists less than $X for the same work is not something we're willing to do except in extreme circumstances.

Imho they don't need to be of such high quality. Don't get me wrong they're great to look at and awesome art is important, but in terms of "bang for the buck" it is mostly the style and overall look of the characters I take with me. A scene with one or more characters in could do the trick almost as well, and have setting elements that double for a regular piece of art elsewhere in the book. Basically, why not just have the sample characters appear in the regular artwork?

This sort of thing might be possible ... but I think it would lower the appeal, myself. Like I said, we're considering different options. :)

You know, this game might have enough of a fanbase at this point that you might be able to start tapping into a volunteer pool of resources. Just say the word, and I'm sure someone in these forums would love the chance to get their art featured in your books, for little more than a namedrop in the credits. Or if you are really worried about being unfair to some artists, you can always try and pay them with the profits from the book after release, rather than prior to release. The potential is there, you guys.

As someone who has friends who have in the past or currently are attempting to make a living as artists, I appreciate that.

Again ... this goes right back to paying some artists $X and some artists less-than-$X, and that's not something we're willing to do except in extreme circumstances. One of the reasons we get the great artists we do is because we pay fairly and we pay before print publication (many publishers pay 30-60 days after print publication.) If anyone here knows artists that would be great for Eclipse Phase, tell them to get in touch with us via email. :-) The bottom line is, if a project can't be profitable without extreme corner cutting, we are probably better off as a company to work on a project that IS profitable without such corner cutting, and in the long run, all of our creative team and our fans benefit from that.

Considering all that, the only other idea I might have for high-risk projects would be Kickstarter. Set the minimum to what you need in order to afford all expected art within the book.

Similar to kickstarter
Another alternative to kickstarter is what the hex-n-chit wargamers do. Collect preorder commitments until you get enough to fund a product, then charge the preorders and produce the product.

Another option is to make a fan-based project, like The Eye was. Making characters is easy. Getting artists isn't. If artists are willing to work for free (or perhaps with PS+'s blessing, the project could charge something and the artists get at least a little money), there's no reason you can't put such a project together. Although further discussion on this line probably deserves it's own thread.

Rimward available in print yet?
Rimward was available at GenCon, but my proxy there wasn't able to pick it up for me. Do you have any remaining copies, and if so, how could I go about ordering one? Allan.

I think a "community-made" NPC file could be made like this, with PostHuman Studios providing little more than file design and distribution of the (free) product. The idea would be to have two threads, for example, one with character designs (a description, some extra data, history, chracter sheet and adventure seeds) and the other with character drawings. From this two threads, a third thread can be made with the final product coming from people drawing the characters described, and people describing the drawed characters! The it gets all nicely packaged by PHs, to be visually coherent with the other EP products, and done! (but personally, I would prefer one page for the drawing, one page for the character sheet, and the last page for the history and adventure seeds).

Yes, the remaining 2800 or so copies are in the shipping process now, and will be slamming into retail stores very soon ... we'll announce the street date next week!

I can't wait. Reading .pdf is a pain compared to dead-tree copies.

I'm glad the Fenrir is
I'm glad the Fenrir is getting some attention, but not for the reasons I hoped. In retrospect and after reading the comments here, I've come to the conclusion that yes, my numbers were a bit low. That said, I say play it as is and see what happens. For my part, I will add it to the list of enjoyable crazy-ass morphs that I've written for this game (last time around it was the Whiplash in Gatecrashing) and see what more ridiculous things I can come up with for the next thing I work on.
