Retirement in the New Economy
Hello fellow Egos, In the Old Economy, retirement is pretty straight forward (if significantly simplified). You accumulate money and resources, plan and invest, and hopefully do well enough where savings and interest perpetuate such to provide monetary support without labor. However, how does this occur in the New (Rep) Economy? Certainly, so soon after the Fall, and with young morphs available, Egos have things to do. However (barring Metaplot, GM Storyline, etc.), at some point, some (sizable?) number of Egos are going to want to retire. While a change of occupation could remedy things for some Egos, others are going to want to simply step back and enjoy life as they can. However, as they reduce their "productive" participation in society, their Reputations will decline, especially as the current society gives the impression that one is a pariah if they merely sit on their laurels for a moment, much less rest upon them. Therefore the question becomes: How does one retire in a Rep Economy, and yet still be able to function in society and enjoy life?

Eveeyone is already retired
Eveeyone is already retired in the rep economy, the concept of retirement is an Old Economy concept, based on the idea of working for a capitalist until your body gave out, when you work a job that is really just a hobby with some basic maintenance chores and are immune to age, you are always retired.
Exhuman, and Humanitarian.

The desire to retire
The desire to retire is probably as much related to aging, growing infirm, unwell, etc, as it is to any particular interest in dropping out of one’s career. One of the interesting things about immortality is how it would change one’s career path. Most folks are on the top of their game in their 50s, in terms of being a dept head, a chief scientist, a high-ranking public official, etc., then they’re fading and thinking about retirement. RW, at that age it would be absurd to chuck it all for a new career path. No so the Immortals; immortality would allow one to extend career (and childhood) indefinitely. My sense is transhumans would try various career paths, dropping out of one profession and taking up another. Could be years between professions, but what one needs in the interim can be pulled out of a fabber. It might outwardly appear like retirement—a person might go years as a shiftless and shaggy dog—but I suspect someone in perfect, perfect health would soon grow bored of doing nothing and start doing something. Retirement becomes instead re-entrenchment. Seems baked right into the game that there are lots and lots of Egos who do very little but live very well.

everyone may be effectively
everyone may be effectively immortal but that does not mean everyone wants to be. Some people are not going to have the drive or strength of will to live through multiple lifetimes and may voluntarily enter cold storage at the expiration of their morph. Remember there is a trait in the core book Called immortality blues which is severe depression resulting from living multiple lifetimes.
