Relativistic statistical arbitrage
Stock market trading is getting so fast today that it might be profitable to place servers in the middle of the Atlantic or in the Alps to profit from their space-time location: http://www.kurzweilai.net/when-the-speed-of-light-is-too-slow In EP, this is solved by QE comms - finance firms likely burn more qubits every day than all the militaries expect to burn in a real war. And this is why there is so much qubit shipping around.

It reminds me of the Nanosecond Buyout in Shadowrun, where the infamous Damian Knight of Ares made his fortune in literally a millisecond due to exploiting lag like that.

root@Relativistic statistical arbitrage [hr] And all of that qubit shipping must make Firewall nervous. How long will it be before an AGI makes a Singularity attempt using the stock market to fuel itself? I imagine there is quite a bit of oversight on the movement of those qubits, which would make a black market qubit exchange immensely profitable, and immensely illegal. Thanks for the link. [EDIT] I wonder if some advantage can be had by hosting stock exchanges in open space? The interplanetary medium is a much better approximation to vacuum than air on the planet, so transmission speeds might be able to approach optical quality over a much larger distance. Not currently an issue, but it would be in EP.
