I have a pair of doubts about muses.
Are muses visible to others characters?
If a NPC (or a PC) falls in love with a muse, can they enter a simulspace to have sexual relations?
Can I use Skillsofts with a muse? How?

Re: Questions about muses ...
The answer to all is 'if you want'.
Typically, a Muse is visible/present just for the user, but there's no reason you can't show any visual output you want.
They're AIs, so they use skillsofts as AIs.

Re: Questions about muses ...
But, how do you implant a skillware on a muse?

Re: Questions about muses ...
A muse is a piece of software running on somebody ecto or implant. So you can't necessarily "see" it, but other characters could certainly interact with it. It's probably very common for muses to screen calls, so other characters probably interact with a muse all the time.
Sure, but I bet that society would view this as kind of weird. Sort of like the "playing with yourself cause you can't get a real partner..."

Re: Questions about muses ...
Like I said, it's a standard rule for all AIs. Skillware is not involved.
"Every character starts with a personal muse for free. Many devices also come with pre-installed AIs, capable of helping the user, responding to commands, or even operating the device on their own. Rules for AIs can be found on p. 264.
Below are some commonly available AI programs. Unless otherwise noted, these AIs have aptitudes of 10. These AIs may also be equipped with skillsofts (p. 332)."
Just to be clear, one of the AIs listed is 'Standard Muse'. :) 'Muse' is just what we call a certain kind of personalized helper AI.

Re: Questions about muses ...
I imagine that it's significantly *more* accepted than those kinds of things today (depending as always on the habitat). It's definitely not 'weird' to be friends with your muse; the book talks about muse-killing as 'murder'. As for the sex aspect, we can only imagine that simulspaces run the gamut from unimaginably freaky to boringly 'normal'.

Call me an old-fashioned cephalopod, but ain't nobody having sex with my muse. So keep your pervy thoughts to yourselves, ladies.

"He was not stalking *me*! He was stalking *my muse*! I feel so insulted..."
Hmm, so far one PC in my group has been married to his muse, one has a *very* naughty relation to his muse, one uses a fork of himself as muse, and another PC has a pornography-addicted muse (she is an official Chinese Government Political Officer muse who feels a strong need to censor all porn from inputs to her protégé... who happens to be an AGI entirely without interest in it; her Big Sister however is *very* interested in finding porn to censor :-) ) OK, my gaming group tend to have slightly quirky characters.

Re: Questions about muses ...
One of my previous characters was a hacker who had a Muse and Kaos AI both living as small floating objects in their AR, called Geo and Azathoth. Geo assumed various geometric shapes, and Azathoth was a writhing mass of tentacles. The two regularly argued.
It was quite amusing.

Actually "playing with the family dog because you can't get a real partner" came to my mind...

Re: Questions about muses ...
I disagree. It's probably seen mostly as more than masturbation, less than a relationship. Everyone knows how attached you can get to your muse, after all.
It only becomes worrying when you spend more time with your AI friend than your "real" friends. It's probably seen as playing too many video games is today.

Re: Questions about muses ...
I still think that's vastly more accepted and common in EP as well. I get the feeling that the norm for much of transhumanity is workaday slog, then play video games until it's work time again.

Re: Questions about muses ...
I agree, but only in the most liberal sense of the term "games". The mesh, after all, is big, and so is the human imagination.
A person might go to work and do a few hours in the office, then come home while their servitor makes them a dinner with nutrient requirements set by a signal from their medichines sent by their muse. They get into their favourite chair, eat their meal, and go through their feeds in AR; check the news, check their mail, browse their favourite mesh sites, etc.
Then, when they're done eating, they either play solo games on something equivalent to a game console, or join up a VR world.
And what then?
People might participate in whole digital nations, build entire worlds, and live in ways that vary from the mundane to the truely bizarre. I can imagine all the obvious ones, such as pastoral landscapes or impossible landscapes where people go to relax or burn off steam with wild parties/orgies, or the large sims created as combat zones where people go on quests or fight wars. The most common/popular that I imagine, though, is ones where people go to live a second life remarkably like the first ("I just got done my shift at the office, now to go work my shift at my digital store!"), except that the cheapeness of resources makes doing what they WANT to do far easier than in meatspace.
Are you bored and unfulfilled in your life as a mid-level distribution manager for one of Cognite's nootropic production facilities? Why not come work as a desk clerk for a digital store? Maybe it's a friend's store and you're doing them a favour, or maybe you just want to interact with people. Whatever the case, they come by, you talk, you show off things, and you actually feel like a human being. Maybe you find you're actually pretty good at designing clothing, or art, or music, or writing books, or movies, or whatever you like. Maybe you're terrible at it but enjoy doing it so much that you spend your free time practicing at it until you are. Perhaps you could open your own little store? Or just wear your designs and sell them to people who ask.
I figure that, when people can live out their fantasies, they'll quickly realize that the ones they want the most are the simplest ones: The feeling of fulfillment in doing one's job; of creating things they love; of being self-sufficient; of being in control of their destiny.
Being Drunkass McBeard, Dwarven Warrior, is cool and all... But after a while, you start to wonder where the point is. Even if you choose to take fulfillment in that game, because of how impressive your swordsmanship now suddenly is, you might start up a mercenary company or something, just so you feel you've accomplished something.

Here you have it!!
10 AF's Family Guy, every Sunday on ExperiaFox at 8, EST (Elysium Standard Time)
In the Euro-comics Travis, there's a GREAT idea for a muse. She's called Peggy and she behaves a lot like a Muse do. I don't know if the book exist in French, but it's a recommended reading

Re: Questions about muses ...
Muses? I design and make morphs, so my PC has had his "ideal mate" for a while now. Synthetic, yes, but perfect in every way. Muses are for pathetic beggars, not choosers. ;)

Re: Questions about muses ...
The heart wants what the heart wants. You're applying a very physical-centric perspective, first, and maybe they don't want to romantically love something they *created*. Or maybe they don't *like* synthetics (just VR). Tastes vary (wildly), and someone could call building your partner 'pathetic'. :)

Re: Questions about muses ...
I've always like the idea that my Muse would be more like my wingman. Helping find and design virtual and real world connections. I would never "date" my Muse. The breakup would be messy, who gets to keep the implants?
I see custom virtual and synthetic partners being very popular after they reach a certain level of realism.
Real relationships might be a rare and exotic experience after a certain point.
Imagine how awkward, having to put up with someone else's quirks who might not even support and encourage your goat girl fetish.

Re: Questions about muses ...
Depends. Pray that you don't have a puppet sock or cyberbrain.
"I'm leaving you."
"Hey, remember that hacking skillsoft you gave me?"
"Wait... NOOO- Ah, that's better. Now to ruin his reputation."
That's what the lifestyle of an outer system dreg is for.
One of my players had a character who had an obsessive love for his slightly mad muse. Gave some interesting roleplay opportunities as he would do anything for her, but she didn't exactly have his interests in mind. Awesome way to mess with the party in a very real and frustrating sense. He was a neo-hominid ex cage fighter. They weren't about to force him to get rid of her.
