Programming and Nanofabrication
Hello. I have listened characters need a blueprint to make a nanofabrication. But, in other places they say you can use your programming skill to make the blueprint or to make the nanofab object. I would like to know clearly what they have to do, buy a blueprint or progam it. Is it easy to program a blueprint? Makes me feel confused. Thanks in advance!

A Blueprint ist the complete
A Blueprint ist the complete collection of building instructions a nanofabber needs. A nanofabber AI has a programming rating of 20 or 30 (not sure at the moment) and a fail only indicates that the item has minor imperfections. So, the process of fabrication with a blueprint is hands-free. Programming a blueprint means that an engineer designs a device from ground up. Design, Function, Mathematical and Physical Limits of Operation. If someone wants a pistol it is far easiert to get a ready blueprint instead of investing weeks or months in the creation of a selfmade working blueprint design. But - if the device in question is not available (quantum matrix tachyon deflector....), the programmer needs to create the blueprint by him/herself. Which will take a while, maybe years. The Programming Skill can also be used to alter existing blueprint designs (i.e. put a scope on a pistol blueprint or modify its handle), or merge blueprints (converting external underbarrel grenade launcher to an integrated underbarrel grenade launcher to an assault rifle)if desired.

To create an object you need
To create an object you need a blueprint, nanofabrication machine, and raw materials. Nanofabrication takes 1 hour per object Cost Category. Raw Materials are usually GM dependent. Blueprint can be bought at cost one category higher than the object itself. Or you can program it yourself using Programming skill. Programming a blueprint is task action with a timeframe of 1 WEEK per object cost category. You make a test like with normal task actions. Accelerated simulspace is your friend here. GM can change the timeframes ass he/she sees fit or rule that to create an object you need appropriate suplemmentary skill. For example to create Farcaster you need Academics:Physics, custom nanobots Medicine:Nanomedicine or Academics: Nanotechnology for new armor it could be Hardware: Armorer Also in the inner system blueprints are kinda illegall if you're not registered hypercorp.

Not exactly. Blueprints are controlled like their products and restricted by IP laws. You can still get access to blueprints for legal products made by people who sell them or give them away.

I'll help! Once I'm done, you
I'll help! Once I'm done, you'll be way more confused! How does that sound? ... OK fine. I'll help you get *less* confused. To use a nanofab to make an object, you need the right kind of fabber and blueprints for the object. Makers only make food (usually poor quality). Fabbers are specialized nanofabs, able to make a limited selection of goods, such as any medicine or any garage tool. The range of goods is determined when the fabber is made. A Cornucopia Machines can make anything (or just about anything). Blueprints can be bought, downloaded for free from some place shady, programmed by yourself, or acquired some other way. Assuming you have a good blueprint and a nanofab, you only need to make a simple success programing test. Simple success is a type of test where you will succeed either way, but there are consequences for failure. Essentially you are configuring settings and stuff. Some mix of fabber settings and blueprint settings. A guy who thinks he is a real comedian might put the default settings on a blueprint he made so any gun produced glows bright pink. Another mistake that could be made is the hand grips of a weapon are made too big or too small. Considering that it doesn't take long to do the programing test to order a nanofab to make an object, its probably worth your time to take a few more minutes doing the test to get bonuses. It'll help you avoid embarrassing and possibly dangerous mistakes. A warning. Some fabbers are programmed to only accept blueprints from official venders, and some blueprints are programmed to only work on official fabbers. There might even be a required login step before you get started. Some fabbers are even smart enough to recognize things like weapons, and send warning to the police and maybe include hidden kill switches. These add complications. If you are a new GM, feel free to skip this for now. Programing blueprints is an entirely different topic. It is a complex time consuming process. It takes 1 week per price category of an object. So a [Trivial] object will take 1 week, a [Low] object will take 2 weeks, and a [Moderate] object will take 3 weeks. Once this work period is complete, you make a programing (nanofabrication) test to see if your blueprint was completed successfully. You can use complementary skills for this test, such as Academics: Nanotechnology or some other skill related to the object. Or you could take extra time. Every 50% increase will give you a +10 bonus. If this doesn't help to clear confusion, then feel free to read the nanofabrication section. See core rulebook p. 284.

Making a blueprint by RAW is
Making a blueprint by RAW is just a programming task action with a very long time (1 week per cost category IIRC), but a lot of GMs house rule it to require a relevant academic or hardware skill as well. Many nanofabs only accept blueprints which have been made or approved specifically, so you can't just feed them any blueprint you made though.

If you have the requisite
If you have the requisite skills to program a nanofab blueprint, chances are pretty good you have those to jailbreak a DRM-enabled CM.
