Interestingly, I've used something like this before, except it's religiosity instead of a desire to find others like us. The Church of the God-Machine are a group that take the idea "If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent Him" very seriously. They are a group of agnostics who believe that a god-like super-machine either already exists or must be created, and it is their goal to create a super-machine and/or find the one that made the universe. They're not sure if their deity exists or not, but they're working ardently to try and make it happen. Naturally, they're not exactly well-liked, which is why their presence is limited to a few singularity seeker groups and a handful of colonies that are [i]very[/i] closely watched. For the most part, though, they're a harmless bunch.
