A balloon filled with coffee grounds hooked to a vacuum pump seems to make a dandy universal gripper. One can imagine the odd brinker building ad-hoc grippers like this for projects or as replacement parts for their morphs.

I could see this being used for synthmorphs that have no need for fine motor skills... servantbots that retrieve things for their owner and such. This might also be an interesting grip for footpads on a synthmorph designed as a climber... a cheaper alternative to gecko grip.

The application of this technology is pretty endless. Imagine just having a palm made out of that? Never have to worry about picking up thumb tacks although you might break the vaccum seal but when more cash goes into this project I imagine materials with better strength but as much flexibility as latex that would make up the beanbag. Oh and all this talk of granularity made me think of lunar soil actually. So it could be a pretty good use for that. Since lunar soil was never eroded (no water or wind to wear it down) it is more like chunky clumps with a granularity similar to that of coffee. If that's the case then a colony could just take a latex ball stick some lunar/martian dirt in there subject it to a vacuum pump and bang, universal gripper.
