Does anyone know if the term 'Muse' is an original name of the game, or if there is some kind of prior work where the term was coined? I'm doing a research paper and it would look better to refer to the original text than an RPG.

You mean the Greek muses? Or some sf using the term muse for assistant AI?
As far as I know, it is unique to EP. Although similar terms exist in plenty of other fiction - the daimons of Walter John Williams "Aristoi" come to mind.

I was referring to using the term for assistant AI. Personally, I think the connection to the Greek muses is really witty.
