Organized Dueling
One reference in passing I found interesting was that dueling was becoming a popular way to solve problems, given access to backups and modern medical tech. Some melee weapons and single shot pistols would be weapons most habitats don't worry too much about. Here is an idea of mine: Given post scarcity economics and value of reputation, what if wagers involving reputation become attached to dueling? Instead of a lengthy trial and lots of red tape, why not duel the person who accused you of stealing their work? My idea is this. Certain hypercorp elites (or at least a few habitats) eventually make reputation-wager duels into a more organized form. The loser needs to be resleeved (normally) and has a loss of reputation, and winner gains a reputation boost from the wager. There is a risk of someone becoming too much of a skilled duelist and resolving all of their problems in the "arena," but perhaps some regulations may prevent too much reputation from being gained or wagered. Perhaps they may also use a separate reputation system for dueling ranking? It eventually becomes a cross between a conventional duel, Roman gladiator matches, and UFC. Perhaps some more sports-centric groups adopt the trend, making it more of a sport. They might throw in complications to the fight (like an obstacle course to navigate, uneven terrain to fight over, some crude combat drones to complicate the match, multiple fighters, etc.). Weapons would mainly be single shot weapons (perhaps disposable, prefabbed pistols and musket analogs with soft lead projectiles) and melee weapons. Combinations may also work (like a bayoneted musket, heavy pistol, etc.). Obviously, what is allowed to go into morphs would be regulated. This might mean a decent reason to have some free running/parkour, martial arts, and melee combat in a session. A PC's background might be a disgraced fighter for such events. Still, 'dueling' in this sense could be the extreme sport of transhumanity.

I could see very dangerous sports existing in the Eclipse Phase universe. For instance, I imagine a game of freefall racing, where racers leap out of a ship and try to reach the ground the fastest... having no fear of the destruction of their bodies. Cortical stacks are specially designed in these events, being capable of handling much higher levels of impact than standard issue models. Or perhaps games of paintball being replaced with live fire combat sports. The possibilities are quite endless in a world where injuries can be healed in hours rather than weeks, and death is more of a wallet issue than... mortality issue. As for dueling itself, reputation was generally the point behind dueling in its heyday. I have no doubt that will be the same in the future, whether death can be overcome or not.

There is a good scene at the beginning of Stross' "Glasshouse" showing how such duelling could happen. Two people annoy each other in a bar, "go out the back" (actually, teleport somewhere else) and have a duel with swords. The protagonist kills the other, go back to the bar where the antagonist is revived by magic nano. They chat over drinks, now when the hormones have settled. Morphs are pretty expensive, so duels to the death might be rarer in EP than Glasshouse. But to prove a point, show old-fashioned primate machismo and entertain they are great. While duels as sport might have an audience everything becomes much more fun if the fighters are actually angry at each other - it is the authenticity that draws viewers. And thanks to skillsofts and good morphs even corporate executives won't be *too* bad at fighting. "Ladies and gentlement. Here we have a duel brought to us by the marketing department of Ingentatech. In the red corner we have Valentina K. Washington-Lee from the memetic analysis unit. In the blue corner we have Melissa E. Jacobsen from the interplanetary marketing unit. Both claim the other has impaired their work and 'contributed to an aggressive and non-cooperative mood'. So here they are, ready to once and for all find out which viral marketing strategy is superior!" Simspace duels are of course just games. Unless they are fought by real hackers, at which point they can be much deadlier than any physical duel. I guess most are "first ego" - the first one to hack into the other's brain wins. No scorching allowed.

Why not duel the person bumping into you at the street, or that sent a annoying nanotort against your Muse. I see this happening in Extropia. Extropia citizens everyday annoyances & entertainment may be the duels resolving matters.

Given some of my gun-nut extropian friends, I can definitely see that happening. An armed society is a polite society, and all that. "Hey! You! You bumped me. Miniduel *now*!" "Well... OK, I got the time. Medusan Gold 4." "Green Diamond Security... check, all agreed." {Secbots set up an aerostat cordon a bit away from the street. A bot from Duels Unlimited offers weapons. A few onlookers watch, most pedestrians just continue past} Yes, games can be quite serious as long as the costs and consequences are real. Losing a computer game is nothing, losing a game tournament is much more. Losing a game where you have staked a week of loyal service can be a big thing.

I have been using such duels as hackfests (here is a system on the Mesh - each of you have sixty seconds to try to crack in and break root on it), nanoduels (whoever engineers the most resilient strain of nanotech in a sealed arena - think Core Wars only with physical bots), and fighter craft laser tag as means of conflict resolution when one or more combatants have not bought the services of the regional legal outfit on Extropia in my games.

Of course, the word "deadly" has a different connotation in a world where people can be brought back from the dead.
