Mesh ID vs Ego ID?
I'm re-reading the basic rulebook, trying to pin down all the stuff I'll need to understand in order to run the game... And I just can't get a grip on these ID's. Mesh ID's are described as being, well, something like MAC addresses: unique top each piece of equipment (ecto, morph, weapon). On the other hand, they are described as being a little bit like an account -- tied to your identity when using services in the mesh. A bit like your account name and password. And then we have something called an ego ID, which is described as basically some sort of hash of your ego. Like a fingerprint or other means of "absolute" identification. I'm not clear on how one's ego id would be affected by new memories or opinions forming, ego hacking, psycho-surgery etc but let's ignore that for now. Given that most of humanity has changed morph at least once in their lifetime (from biomorph to infomorph) and most infomorph are hoping/expecting to get a new physical body at some point, it seems kind of weird to tie one's online accounts etc to the ID of the morph one inhabits at the moment. Here's how I'd solve it: Ignore everything the book says about Mesh ID being like an account. Keep the MAC address bit: you'll need to know the mesh ID of someone if you want to hack their morph etc. But ego ID's are used for most "account" type stuff -- logging into systems etc. Some services use other means of identification. Most devices capable of interacting with the mesh are able to also automatically provide such identification -- a bit like services like LastPass or KeyPass. What's your take on this? Do you have an alternate interpretation or explanation of the text?

Here's my take on it: Keep everything the book says about Mesh ID being an account, because otherwise it would be waaay the fuck too hard to make and burn fake IDs constantly, which is a Thing You Have To Doto have any hope of remaining undetected whilst engaging in subterfuge in a panopticon society.
Skype and AIM names: Exactly the same as my forum name. My EP Character Questionnaire Thread for my Questionnaire The Five Orange Pips

I suggest reading the book a bit more. But just to help answer your question... There are two different things that are called Mesh ID. One is an account, your handle. That's the primary online ID. The other is the equivalent of the MAC Address, showing the ID of the hardware your are using. The reason (my headcanon for in-universe) why it's also called the Mesh ID is because everything with a radio and some CPU (AKA, everything tagged with a spime and up) is a router in the Mesh. If it's too confusing for you, just keep the Mesh ID as an Account, and split the hardware aspects into a new ID type, such as Hardware ID. An Ego ID is basically your government issued ID Card. Read the books a bit more closely, since they address your basic concerns there.
Somebody is using bad science! Snark, facts, snark. Your body is corrupted: Cool, do more science to it. Your mind is warped: That's nice, want a cookie? What do we say to the God of Death? Not today!
