I'm re-reading the basic rulebook, trying to pin down all the stuff I'll need to understand in order to run the game...
And I just can't get a grip on these ID's.
Mesh ID's are described as being, well, something like MAC addresses: unique top each piece of equipment (ecto, morph, weapon). On the other hand, they are described as being a little bit like an account -- tied to your identity when using services in the mesh. A bit like your account name and password.
And then we have something called an ego ID, which is described as basically some sort of hash of your ego. Like a fingerprint or other means of "absolute" identification. I'm not clear on how one's ego id would be affected by new memories or opinions forming, ego hacking, psycho-surgery etc but let's ignore that for now.
Given that most of humanity has changed morph at least once in their lifetime (from biomorph to infomorph) and most infomorph are hoping/expecting to get a new physical body at some point, it seems kind of weird to tie one's online accounts etc to the ID of the morph one inhabits at the moment.
Here's how I'd solve it: Ignore everything the book says about Mesh ID being like an account. Keep the MAC address bit: you'll need to know the mesh ID of someone if you want to hack their morph etc. But ego ID's are used for most "account" type stuff -- logging into systems etc. Some services use other means of identification. Most devices capable of interacting with the mesh are able to also automatically provide such identification -- a bit like services like LastPass or KeyPass.
What's your take on this? Do you have an alternate interpretation or explanation of the text?
