New player looking for online game
Experience with Eclipse Phase: None. I have most of the Eclipse Phase supplements but I've never played, and I'm still close-reading my way through all the core rules. Experience with RPGs in general: I've been playing everything from AD&D 1e to Mutants & Masterminds 2e for 20 years, and DM'ing half of them for almost 10 years. Experience with transhuman concepts: I've been reading the stuff on Orion's Arm for years. I have a first-edition copy of the original "Engines of Creation". Availability: I should be available any evening except Thursday or Friday. Since I'm not working right now, my schedule is, ahem, flexible. I'm looking for a chat-based online game, not a PBP. Interests: Your bog-standard Firewall Sentinel campaign would be enough for me, I need to get my feet wet in Eclipse Phase so I can eventually run it. Gatecrashing would be all right too. Pretty much my only limits are 'I am not interested in dark-gray-or-black-on-black everybodys-a-bastard-there-is-nothing-good ultra-cynical morality type games'; even in a complex world with shades of gray, I like to have a gameworld that supports a character who believes in things. Or to use a Mass Effect analogy: nothing darker than a Mass Effect 2 80% renegade/20% paragon run, please. My two vague general concepts right now are 'memory-edited math genius who's a fish out of water but technically brilliant with all sorts of hacking and codebreaking' and 'an ex-soldier who just barely got off Earth during the Fall and has been sort of aimlessly going around since'. Also, while I can imagine myself ending up in any faction but the Jovians or the Ultimates, I lean more towards the autonomists. Software: I don't have a microphone. I really don't want to install any new chat clients if possible, my machine is cluttered enough. The online RPGs I've been in so far, we used an AIM chatroom. I've never used Roll20 but I'd be willing to log onto that because it's just browser-based.

Hmm. You know, I think I
Hmm. You know, I think I probably have time to run a weekly game, with the caveats that I can't do it on Sundays or Thursdays, and I'd prefer a weeknight to a weekend, to avoid conflicting with plans I may make. I prefer text-based chat for running games, and have no objections to playing in an AIM chatroom, although my preference would be to make use of the Eclipse Phase MUSH. I don't run completely black games, and being a bastard is often counter-productive in a world like Eclipse Phase where nearly every move is on camera. You can expect most NPCs to be acting in terms of their own self-interest (sometimes more enlightened self-interest, sometimes not.) I am not a physicist or an engineer -- my education is in political science and international relations -- so if you're expecting the kind of scientific detail and accuracy that some of the members of this board can provide, I'm not the GM for you, though I do aim for plausibility. I also tend to run very low combat games (which does not rule out the players deciding to take a combative approach to a problem, only that it's seldom going to be an approach that you _have_ to take.) I tend to try for games that focus more on investigation and problem solving, for the most part. The game size would be capped 5 players, with a minimum of 3 before I'll run. On the off chance I get more interest than that, I'll pick the the ones that I think would be the best fit. So, here's the game pitch: Search and Rescue - When disaster strikes on Mars (or anywhere immediately accessible from Mars), the players are the ones sent in to get people out alive. Characters would be living in Valles-New Shanghai and would need to be at least respectable enough to work for the government, though their sympathies could still lie anywhere. Players are not members of Firewall, and i-rep/Networking: Firewall are not available at character creation. X-rep and U-rep are in use, though the former is more likely to be useful than the latter. Being sent to orbital stations around Mars or even sent through to an exoplanet to rescue Gatecrashers are entirely possible. No loners, when concepts are put forward. This doesn't mean a character can't be introverted, socially awkward, or the like, just that they have a role within the group that they're willing and able to perform. Some concepts that would work particularly well for this game: doctor/paramedic; pilot/driver; public relations/media; gatecrasher; engineer (various types). Expect skills like Medicine: paramedic, climbing, and freefall to come up on a regular basis. Minor houserules: Background changes - Reinstantiated and Fall Evacuee backgrounds gain an additional +5 to one skill of their choice. For Uplifts, the two additional knowledge skills are at +10, not +20. Infolife characters do not gain the CP cost modifiers for technical or social skills, and instead get the following benefits to replace them: +10 infosec, research, and programming, and they do not suffer the usual -10 penalty for sleeving into synthmorphs. This makes all the backgrounds worth approximately 40 points each.

Sounds good!
So, it's "Emergency!" , but on Mars? Ooooo. Yeah, I'm interested. As for scientific accuracy, I don't need it; I just wanted to reassure prospective DMs that I was interested in and aware of the transhuman SF genre in general, and didn't think this game was just 'Shadowrun in Space' or something. Politics and intrigue are not something I'm great at, but I don't suck at it either. And I'm willing to be supporting cast in that kind of drama. As for x-rep and u-rep... man, I had to google just to know what those were. Character concept... [edit] It's all posted below now, in more detail.

c-can I play too?
I'd also be interested if you're looking for more players, i'd be willing to make either a researcher, or a specialized search and rescue agent who usually works with gatecrashers.

Sounds good!
Sounds good! You still need to pay for starting weapons and armor that you'll be routinely using, but the upside to it being company provided is that it's all licensed and perfectly legit to own and use (within mission parameters) even in PC territory. That said, for missions not expected to have combat you're generally not going to armed with more than a sidearm (and you'd be ICly encouraged to limit corporate liability by going with something non-lethal, like a stunner or microwave agonizer -- but that's not an OOC limit on what weapon to choose.) More exotic equipment or heavier weapons would be provided as the mission warranted, and you won't be expected to pay for any of that (but you'll generally be expected to return it afterward whenever possible, too.)

Elric -- pitch me your
Elric -- pitch me your concept. I've only got the OP as a player so far, and I want three people at minimum, so I'm definitely still looking! If you decide to go with a researcher, just remember that you're an active part of the SAR team, so you'd need to have the skills to apply that research in practical situations as well, but I could very much see that as a very valuable contribution to the group. You'll get provided with at least basic information on your rescue ops, but being able to find out additional information when you need it is extremely valuable.
elric225 elric225's picture
Concepts
Well for my researcher, the idea i've been going with is he's a genehacker argonaut working for somatek and has experience with uplifts and smart animals, but was transferred to working on new chimeras, and is a crow for firewall. He'd be very COG and knowledge based and would most likely wind up the team scientist or medic. I'm not hellbent on this concept though, given a role to fill i'm sure I can come up with something.
Tyrnis Tyrnis's picture
I think you'll be better off
I think you'll be better off modifying that for this game -- your characters aren't involved with Firewall at all. I'd be perfectly glad to have a full-fledged trauma surgeon as the team doctor, and having a background with uplift medicine is perfectly good as well, so you should be able to keep a lot of it. A SAR team would be a really odd place for a doctor more interested in research than in seeing patients to end up, though, so while he may have a background in medical research, he'd need a reason why he gave it up in favor of this.
elric225 elric225's picture
That's not a problem
I can easily cut my researchers ties with firewall, as for why he's involved he could be using the disaster as an "opportunity" to test out a new smart animal he's cooked up, a sort of cross between a saint bernard and an ox. Otherwise my option for a gatecrasher Search and rescue specialist stands

Wally Reskev
Dunno if you're still here, but I finished making the gatecrasher. He's a little underwhelming because I had to put points into knowledge skills I didn't want, but I stuck him in a martian alpine morph and gave him some gatecrasher gear, should be good at getting around in all terrains.

I'm actually less worried
I'm actually less worried about character sheets at this point, and more concerned with character concepts and interesting backgrounds.

Well, if I am gonna use the gatecrasher them i'm gonna say he's a fulltime search and rescue operative for pathfinder, while it isn't exactly daily work he's been into the pandora gates dozens of times in attempts to save valuable personnel and equipment. Wally would very much be a firefighter/good samaritan archetype, he genuinely wants to help people.

Here's a bit more detail on
Here's a bit more detail on what I'd like to see from people. Character name: Character history: Where did you come from, and what are the key events that shaped who your character has become? A paragraph or two should be plenty, though you're welcome to give me more than that. You should have been part of the SAR team for a while now, so that you know the other PCs pretty well, and ideally would be friends with them outside of work. Character personality: Obviously, this part will be flexible, since you may find it changes once the game starts, but I'd still like at least a little info on how you picture the character's attitudes toward life, how the character treats others, important goals, and so on. Living friends and family: No one exists in a vacuum. Outside of the SAR team, who are the people that you care about? Give me at least a few names and some basic info about your character's relationship with them. People that died in the fall would go in your history rather than here -- this section is one I can mine for NPCs to include in the game. Living enemies and rivals: Optional, unless you take points for enemy as a negative trait, in which case it's mandatory. If you put someone here and don't take points for them, they're someone who isn't going to be a threat to your life or your job, but might add some personal conflict to the game -- a job rival who wants to prove they're better than you, for instance. Again, this is a section for me to mine for NPCs. Plot hooks: List at least three or four potential seeds for storylines I could potentially run for your character outside of standard rescue missions, but that would be possible for the group to help with. Examples: Rescue my daughter from kidnappers; my brother has joined up with a bioconservative enclave and mom wants me to convince him to come back home.

So one vote for the SAR team being sponsored by Pathfinder, then, it sounds like. Let's wait until we have a group together before we set that in stone, but even if you all decide on a different company, Wally could easily have done plenty of contract work for Pathfinder, so I don't think it'll mean you need to change anything, and the concept sounds good.

Character name:Wally Reskev
Character name:Wally Reskev Character history: Wally was a fall evacuee who almost didnt make it. Being a moscow firefighter meant he was helping civilians onto evacuation shuttles and was only saved by a fellow firefighter pushing him onto the shuttle so he wouldn't stay behind and get bombed/uploaded. In space firefighting isn't as much as a career, so he signed up with Pathfinder, who regularly employs search and rescue specialists. Character personality: Nice guy, good samaritan, big on personal duty and helping others, selfless. Living friends and family: Plenty of friends amongst the staff of pathfinder, and more than once he's been tracked down by a gatecrasher or scientist he's saved so they could shake his hand and thank him for saving their life/recovering the data they died to record. Living enemies and rivals: None really. Plot hooks: Despite working with pathfinder and going through quite a few gates, Wally is little versed in the protocol and on more than one occasion failed miserably due to his ignorance. Other times however he's acted spectacularly and saved the lives of the men and women lost on the other side. In this specific scenario however? He's been asked personally to assist. Someone lost or someone working with someone lost reached out and contacted Wally personally to help, essentially calling in a favor in exchange for R-rep. How these people know Wally is most likely through his exploits at the gates.

Character background
Warning: This is gonna be verbose as hell. If I had an sblock tag, I'd b using it. :) Add: And I figured out how to spoiler-block now. And its all pointless, because this character isn't remotely rules-legal due to my ignorance of the 300/400 skill buying rule. Left intact in case anybody was interested:

CHARACTER NAME: Peter Verhoef HISTORY: Peter Verhoef was born in the Netherlands 26 BF, and attended the European Union Peacekeeping Academy and graduated as a second lieutenant in the EU Peacekeepers. A brilliant and well-educated young man, he rose to the rank of captain and ended up assigned as a junior aide-de-camp to General van Ulm, the Netherlands-born commanding general of the EU Peacekeeper 1st Rapid Response Division. He was still part of the General's party as the remnants of the EU Peacekeeping division made their last stand at Hamburg military spaceport, during the Fall of Earth. After it became known that there were not enough berths left on the available ships, or even enough capacity on the egocasting capacities, to evacuate all the troops after the remaining civilians were taken care of, the General needed all his charisma and command ability to hold the troops together from mutinying. He achieved this by arranging for a random, computer-chosen lottery to determine who would go and who would hold the rearguard to the end -- and by making it known that he would exclude himself from the survivors' lottery, and command the rearguard personally. Captain Verhoef also excluded himself from the lottery to stay with his commander... and found himself entered in it anyway. More than entered in it; the General had convinced the captain of one of the escape ships to reserve a slot for him, and then ordered for Captain Verhoef to go aboard the ship to 'make arrangements'... and he ended up still being on board while it lifted off, using the slot reserved for the general. The escape ship in question was a troop transport headed for Mars. Overcome with survivors' guilt, Captain Verhoef formally resigned his commission in the now non-existent EU Peacekeeping Force en route, and represented himself to the recruiters at the other end as an only moderately-skilled civilian, not advertising his resume. By the time this deception was exposed he was already working as a junior habitat services engineer on a remote Martian outpost. After a couple years of that, he was recruited into the Martian Rangers. Acting in the role of a frontier town sheriff, he spent the next several years being assigned from outpost to dome to small town, keeping order, dealing with drunks and bandits and habitat systems failures and life's little emergencies. Peter's survivors' guilt and untreated PTSD from the Fall led him to seek employment opportunities significantly below his education level, despite his obtaining several new degrees and employment certifications via correspondence learning as he wandered the Martian backcountry. Although honest and devoted to the law he still formed good contacts with the Barsoomians, as one of the cops who would give a ruster a fair shake whenever he could, and turn a blind eye to harmless activities like smuggling or hacking company nanofabs to produce useful goods. He even picked up a few tricks of the trade in that regard. As the hypercorp clampdown of the terraformers and rusters proceeded, the Rangers had to lay people off due to budget cuts, and and Peter found work with a small security corp -- that was within a year the victim of a corporate takeover by Direct Action. Peter grew more and more disaffected with his work. He was expected to act more and more as an enforcer and strikebreaker for the Planetary Consortium then he was as a peace officer and valued community member among the small settlements of the Outback. His c-rep score grew lower and lower as he grew more disaffected, and he was denied sensitive postings due to his suspected Barsoomian sympathies, until he ended up as a mundane security sub-supervisor for a large refinery complex. The industrial disaster that occurred there gave him a new lease on life -- literally. Going above and beyond the call of duty, Peter took command in the middle of the massive fire and hull breach, acting several ranks above his paygrade while the actual management either fled to save itself or was ineffectual. It was due to his actions and command presence that over 100 morphs escaped intact and several key parts of the facility were kept in salvageable condition, even though Peter had to hold the line until the death of his current morph. Of course, since he was a Direct Action employee killed in the line of duty, DA picked up the tab for resleeving him. With his c-rep soundly re-established by his heroism, DA offered him his choice of assignments. However, his temporary death and re-instantation had helped Peter come to some level of closure with his past; instead he resigned his DA contract at the earliest possible date, and sought newer, more fulfilling work elsewhere. Seeing an advertisement for a corp specializing in paramilitary rescue work, he applied, and has just finished training and is ready for his first team assignment. FRIENDS AND FAMILY: Peter's family is all dead in the flooding of the Netherlands during the Fall, when the dikes broke from the orbital strikes of the TITANs. Due to his having been a wandering man with untreated depression, he wasn't very gregarious during his time on Mars. Several people he is close to are... Nuri el-Malik, Sufi clan elder and Barsoomian organizer: Nuri el-Malik, despite being only several years older than Peter, is a well-respected elder among the Sufi nomads of the northern desert, and of undefined yet notable prominence among the Barsoomians. He was Peter's grief counselor during the years immediately after the fall, and him and Peter are as close as brothers. However, their friendship is constrained by their respective allegiances; they have always understood, without anything needing to be said aloud, that certain portions of the other man's life are entirely off-limits. Peter never asks Nuri questions about certain things, Nuri never asks Peter for certain favors or involves him in certain activities. Anne Donovan, hypercorp business consultant: A junior executive management specialist, interdepartmental liason, and "general associate" for one of the PC hypercorps, Anne is Peter's current girlfriend. They met (at the veterinarian's) five months ago shortly after Peter moved into New Shanghai to start his corporate training for his current employer. Anne is solidly middle-class, non-political, and a lifelong resident of Mars, as is her extended family. Her relationship and Peter's is not casual, but they're still figuring out what they have and how deeply they know the other person. The 1st Rapid Response Division, European Union Peacekeeping Forces: Between the Fall, the disastrous partial evac, infugees still stuck in inactive storage, and attrition after the Fall, The 1st Rapid Response has exactly 34 survivors left alive and active in the Solar System today. Peter knows this because he and the rest are all on a particular private mesh mailing list/drop. While him and the other 33 are scattered all over known space in different roles, affiliations, allegiance, and objectives, they all still keep in at least some kind of e-mail contact... if only to celebrate birthdays and funerals. Typical of the sort of informal 'survivor's associations' formed by Fall evacuees of various subgroups, nations, clades, or just shared experiences, the memorial society for the 1st Rapid Response is a quietly private thing. (Since I suck at creating lots of NPCs, I left this open as a device for the DM to insert whichever ones he wants. Note also that surviving widows, cousins, etc. of his former unit mates can also be slotted in here, if you need more variety of archetype.) Nick: Is Peter's cat. An ordinary unmodified off-the-rack black Earth cat with white spots, Peter found him as a stray near the spaceport very shortly after the Fall. Peter has since kept him with him and healthy through every assignment, transfer, and frontier posting he's had on Mars. If you value your life, don't hurt the cat. :) (I admit that putting a cat on this list is cheating, but its indicative of Peter's personality. It's also a personal memorial to a cat I had IRL, who we lost a couple years ago.) ENEMY: Major Alexander Vashin is a Direct Action counterintelligence officer who has spent several years trying to trace back Peter's link to the Barsoomian terrorists. (Which has been epically frustrating, since Peter doesn't actually have any; all of his Barsoomian sympathies and associations are legal and aboveboard). This came to a head when Major Vashin deliberately left security holes surrounding the refinery that junior Direct Action employee Peter Verhoef was stationed at, to give him enough rope to hang himself. Instead Peter became a hero for saving the facility, and Lt. Colonel Vashin got a corporate black mark and a demotion for having gone overboard with his investigation. He now has it as a point of personal pride to prove that Peter is up to /something/, and to ruin the new career that he has. Peter, on his part, is aware that somebody in Direct Action is highly suspicious of him, which is one of the reasons he quit his contract there as soon as he had enough c-rep to cancel it while still keeping his morph free of indenture. He has yet to discover just how outside the rules Major Vashin is prepared to go... although the Major still has limits, given that he can't afford another black mark on his record, and Direct Action doesn't want a major intercorp jurisdictional dispute with Pathfinder. Major Vashin appears on Peter's character sheet as a 10-point Enemy flaw. POSSIBLE PLOT HOOKS: * A member of the 1st Rapid Response memorial society is on Mars! And he needs help. * Major Vashin discovers that Peter is dating a respected hypercorp employee! What will his paranoid mind think of this, and how will Anne react to being caught in the middle? * Major Vashin having finally revealed himself and the depths of his obsessive hatred (whether via the above seed or somethign else)... well, Peter's not going to take that lying down. How does he get this ruthless bastard off his back? * Nuri is finally desperate enough to ask Peter to break the law in the name of friendship... and the circumstances are such that its not execrable for him to have done so. Can Peter find a third option? Or will he finally have to choose between his duty and his closest living friend? DESIGN NOTES: So far the character in question is a good shot, a fair pilot, a good cop, a decent investigator, a military-academy-trained historian, knows a bit of infosec, can do jackleg first aid and fix your gun or your habitat's lifesystem or program your fabber to make basic useful gizmos even without a legal template (all of the above at 35-45, except for combat skills which are 60 in kinetic weapons and fray, 50 in unarmed, 45 in freerunning, 40 in gunnery, clubs, and seeker weapons, and 30 in free fall)... but he knows jack squat about gatecrashing. He's been on only two planets, Earth and Mars. So while he's good for combat support in strange environments and is a jack-of-many-trades-master-of-few for general adventuring, if I have to abandon the 'he's the new guy on the team' element of the character then I'll need to redo a good chunk of the skill list. (The character design was originally done for Mars and Mars-orbit type rescue.)

Aw, nertz
Due to my total unfamiliarity with the "400 CP minimum of Active Skills, 300 CP minimum of Knowledge Skills" rule, my character concept is not even remotely rules-legal. (65 spent CP in knowledge skills). Great. The entire character concept is now scrap! Back to the drawing board! I just finished an arse-kicking concept for a generic Firewall game (largely by stealing it wholesale from an rpg.net thread), but for your game? Didn't have a backup in mind. Well, I'm definitely still interested, so let me start pushing #'s around a sheet again...
elric225 elric225's picture
Damn that rule
On one hand I find it very limiting for concepts that wanna be focused on either academic or physical ideas, but at the same time I like to think its justified ingame, considering there aren't enough morphs for everyone and anyone walking around in the flesh needs to justify their existence. Anyway, GM, can we start discussing scheduling for this game? will we be playing over skype?

Okay, working on a new concept now. This one's going to be the team doctor, so, somebody else will need to create our combat support (if we have any). Edit: And he's done! See below.

We'll be playing on either
We'll be playing in a text-based format like AIM or the Eclipse Phase MUSH. But until we get at least one more person interested, and preferably two to three, there's no point in discussing particulars of when or what specific medium because we don't have enough people to play.
cglasgow cglasgow's picture
Aaaand, he's done
Behold the new character! He's a young idealistic Argonaut born as one of the many great-grandchildren of one of the richest, most powerful, and most ruthless hypercorp oligarchs in known space. (And a canonical one at that -- Orson Pournelle's infamous career is detailed in the sidebar on pages 148-149 of "Sunward") He also, in conjunction with 10 other anarchist, Barsoomian, and Argonaut scientists, helped crack the latest generation of the Planned Obsolescence GSP used by Mars hypercorps and create an open-source cure for Ruster morph degeneration. Awk-ward, that. Full story, plot hooks, etc. here...
Spoiler: Highlight to view
HISTORY: David Pournelle-Kinross was born 14 BF as a scion of the ridiculously wealthy Pournelle clan, one of the oligarch dynasties that hold major (if hidden) sway in the Planetary Consortium, and before then in the Offworld Consortium. Raised in the lap of luxury, given the best of everything, he barely remembers Earth; his parents had moved to one of the glitterati's L-5 habitats when he was a young child. The Fall did not directly touch David's life; as one of the hyperelite's children, he was carefully insulated from its tragedies. The main change it produced was that the overcrowding of the L-5 habitats in the wake of the evacuation prompted his branch of the family's move to Mars, filling in the slots in the oligarchy there as Mars' post-Fall expansion mirrored the birth of the Planetary Consortium. It wasn't until David was in university (pursuing a business degree just like all the other 'First Family' hyperelites of his generation) that he first started meeting people outside the hyperelite cocoon, and with them a knowledge of just what crimes his family had perpetrated during the Fall. Distant family patriarch Orson Pournelle had ruthlessly abused his authority over the Panamanian space elevator to sell evacuation slots to the highest bidders, extort priceless Earth artifacts and/or stock holdings in key offworld corporations from desperate refugees as the price for allowing them escape from Earth, and prioritized hypercorp interests over human life. (It's important to note that David hardly knows the /full/ extent of Orson Pournelle's crimes... that kind of stuff is hardly public knowledge. Just hearing about the least bad 10% or so of what that bastard is rumored to have done is still enough to shock the hell out of anyone.) Guilt-ridden and outraged, David cast about for something do that wouldn't just be a futile gesture, and found his answer in Argonaut philosophy. Changing majors to biogenetics (and later to medicine), David chose to embrace techno-progressivism and pursue a path of using technology to enrich the lives of everyone rather than just conserve wealth for an elite few. Of course, he was hardly the first (or the hundredth) rich young scion to rebel this way, and his family elders calmly acted to show this latest young naive rich boy what the 'real world' was like. Arranging for him to be stuck in a backrocket post in the plains of Tharsis after graduating medical school, they figured that a nice sharp taste of the misery of the proletariat would send him running back to the family trust fund and private pleasure habitats. Instead, David found a new thing to be outraged over; the exploitation of the rusters via the 'Genetic Service Pack' planned obolescence. Applying his medical and genetic training alongside that of Barsoomian and Argonaut genehackers, David was a part of the open-source scientific project that came up with a cure for ruster morph degeneration. While this cure has not ended the GSP scam on Mars (for one thing, arranging for distribution is still quite the problem, in addition to the hypercorp memetic engineering that makes so many rusters still believe the Barsoomian cure is unsafe or a fraud), it has led to a new lease on life for hundreds of thousands of rusters, a lease free of the Consortium "recurring revenue stream". In one fell swoop, David set an all-time Solar System record for highest Circle-A list rep ever achieved by a Pournelle. Needless to say, the family was /not/ amused. Pulling strings to get David the hell out of the Martian Outback before he did something even more embarassing to the family was elementary enough, but one does not become a hypercorp oligarch by being ignorant of what makes people tick. His family elders knew perfectly well that the harder they tried to order a rebellious young man not to do something, the more determined he'd be to do it. [If the campaign is not actually with Pathfinder after all, we'll work out a revision to this next part. The basic theme is 'David ends up working at wherever the PCs are employed'.] So instead deciding to lure him by his scientific curiosity, they 'arranged' for a prime job opportunity at Pathfinder to cross his path, hoping to get some use out of him and his proven intellectual potential by handing him a nice laboratory job far away from politics... and if they were really lucky, far away from the Solar System. It worked... for all of six weeks, which is how long it took for interoffice gossip to filter down to David as to exactly why he'd gotten the job. At which point, David took advantage of the intricacies of the corporate HR manual and finessed an internal transfer to the medical division and became a rescue worker. That'll be a good place to still be in Pathfinder (as he's aware that trying to quit would just ratchet his family's attention up to /really/ uncomfortable levels) and yet not locked into his family's vision of what he 'should' be doing until David figures out what he actually /is/ going to do next. As for his elders? While they continue to keep an eye out, they accept that he's safely contained for now. After all, he's taken what's effectively a menial service job, giving paramedical treatment to proles. What could he possibly end up doing /there/ that would in any way be important? PERSONALITY/INTERESTS: As is obvious, David is an idealist. Raised as one of the many great-grandchildren of a hyperelite immortal oligarch, bred and schooled to be a hyperlite oligarch, with every genetic and material advantage money could possibly buy, David has instead decided to become a progressive devoted to open-source technology and advancing medical science. Like many rich children turned activist, he's still mildly naive on just what the travails and tribulations of the proletariat actually /are/; unlike many of them, he's genuinely intelligent, determined, and sharp with people. People who were /not/ sharp with people didn't survive long in the Pournelle clan; they ended up with a permanent lifetime trust fund and a 'career' as a useless socialite drone for all eternity, just like all the other ones who couldn't make the grade. David is a devoted Argonaut despite never having actually met more than a few of them and never having been to an Argonaut habitat; he's a philosophical devotee based on what he's read and internalized, not an actually employed faction member. He also is comfortable with many of the anarchist ideals about social justice and infugee rights, even if he'd need to use his endocrine control mods to avoid having a heart attack at the pansexual robot snakes and other such weirdness of a full-on anarchist hab. David's main interest is his genetics research and theoretical nanotech concepts engineering, although he's also starting to get mildly interested in xenomolecularbiology. However, this research-oriented side competes for David's attention alongside the fact that he genuinely likes taking his hands and making sick people well. David's hobbies are classical Greek and Roman literature, tai chi, painting, and philosophy. He also regularly competes in the Mars Unlimited-class (all augmentations allowed) Freestyle Parkour league, and placed sixth in the last planetary games. APPEARANCE: David was born to a family that could drop more credit on a whim than most transhumans would make in a century. His morph is the best money can buy -- its a custom-sculpted Menton with a striking and attractive appearance that stands out even in this age of mass-produced beauty. He's also bought many after-market augmentations, and a full set of physical augmentations comparable to those on some combat morphs to make him competitive in the Unlimited-Class Freestyle Parkour tournament circuit. IMPORTANT PEOPLE: Marie Pournelle-Kinross: David's fraternal twin sister. While she's apparently chosen the Family-loyalist path of the hypercorp glitterati/executive, her and David are still each other's big-brother/sister-best-friends-forever(*). And what her own opinion is on things like infomorph exploitation or the more unethical uses of Consortium power, not even David knows for sure. Marie always was the subtle one, after all. (*) It's a running joke between them as to which one was born first; nobody knows. The formal birth certificates show an identical time stamp, and the hospital's local file copies of the obstetrician's lifelog and records were destroyed in the Chicago antimatter explosion during the Fall. Professor Anson Hartley: David's mentor at university, this iconoclastic don is chiefly responsible for his conversion to the Argonauts. An eccentric yet undeniably brilliant scholar in several fields, Professor Hartley is an unshakably tenured fixture among Mars academia despite his outspoken opinions against 95% of the University of Mars' corporate donor list. David and him still correspond regularly, and David's still-unopened bottle of genuine Old Earth 22-year-old relic Scotch was a gift from him to David after the Circle-A list exploded with the names of the 11 genehackers, biologists, and nanotechnicians responsible for cracking the current generation of the Planned Obsolescence GSP... and David Pournelle's name was among them. The First Families: Although David's role in creating the Ruster Cure has tanked his c-rep to zero at the moment, its important to note that he's /not/ actually Blacklisted. That could /never/ (well, /hardly/ ever) happen to a Pournelle; short of outright treason to the Planetary Consortium nothing will change the fact that however on the outs he might be with his family /at the moment/, he is still a distant genetic relation to some of the most influential people in known space. Which means that he will never cease to be at least /some/ kind of useful or interesting to a certain class of people. This is why David's Hypercorp [Networking] skill is so high (its not just how he was raised, its the fact that his last name alone still gets many people to talk to him even if he's in disavor), and this is why his existence on the edge of the most influential family dynasties of the Inner System will be a never-ending source of interesting plot complications -- both good for David /and/ bad -- to the DM. Oversight: While the negative attention David's earned isn't quite at the level where I could justify an Enemy negative trait, being part of the Barsoomian Ruster Cure project definitely doesn't earn you any friends at Oversight. Of course, Oversight has unwritten rules as to how much they're allowed to harass hyperelite First Family scions, even disfavored ones... but then again, the First Families have unwritten rules too. POSSIBLE PLOT HOOKS: * David's ongoing family soap opera. Do they even have a point anymore -- after all, David's a trained and experienced scientist now, and does the family really need yet another hypercorp business specialist? -- or is it just stubborn pride? * Professor Hartley is arrested for having allegedly crossed the line between campus activism and actual sedition/terrorism/libel/fraud? What can David do to help his old mentor? And are the charges true... and if true, are they justified? * David's ongoing athletic competition. Unlimited-Class Freestyle Parkour is /serious business/. And the annual championship is coming up... conflict with medical duties? Crooked gambling syndicate trying to lean on him? Another competitior pulls a Tonya Harding? Possibilities, possibilities... * Oversight, or a particular faction/officer within it, decides to make an example of David as the person involved in the Ruster Cure project that they can most easily reach. Of course, when a hyperelite dynasty as powerful as the Pournelles might be offended by too much overt action, the 'example' must be done very carefully (read: something subdued enough that a PC has a fair chance of successfully resolving the subplot, as compared to the 'you have no hope, go directly to obliterated, do not pass Go, do not collect 200 credits' that usually results in tangling with Oversight.) * Marie, as a hypercorporate lawyer/fixer/operator/etc. of no small heft, does not lead an entirely boring or safe life herself. And her and David /are/ very close... * David's being unfairly shafted at work. His very influential (and normally disapproving) father offers to pull a few strings to help him out. Is this the obvious trap/enticement it looks like, or is this actually a genuine attempt at reconciliation by his old man in the only way he knows how... and how offended/outraged would he be if David refused?

Oh, question...
My David character assumes that we're primarily doing Mars-focused rescue. If we're primarily doing gatecrashing type stuff, then I'd need a new concept. (In canon, Pathfinder is also hilariously uncaring as to whether or not a stranded bunch of gatecrashers needs rescuing, but of course the DM can change that.) Not that I wouldn't mind doing gatecrashing type stuff -- its just, the useful skill sets are often widely divergent. Also, from what I've been reading, any team good enough to do crisis-level gatecrashing has already cost Pathfinder enough money in training and headhunting that they don't seem likely to waste them on city paramedic work. Tentative alternate concept (yeah, I'm surviving the gaming drought by building new characters) is your mostly-standard 'I have lots of wilderness survival and general exploration' skills gatecrasher, the sort of ranger-type guide that goes along with a party of scientists to help keep them alive and uneaten by the monster plants of Cygni IV while they collect their samples. So, where are we going again? Add: Heck with it, I need practice making characters, so I'll do both writeups anyway. Done. Both characters are on the thread I started on General Discussion. Y'all tell me which one will be more useful.

Hey there. I've been wanting
Hey there. I've been wanting to try out EP for awhile but haven't been able to find any in-person games. So, I thought I'd look around for an online thing. And, this scenario sounds pretty cool/interesting. So, here is the character concept I've come up with this evening.
Spoiler: Highlight to view
Character name: Bashir Al-Ashari Character history: Bashir's parents, father Adel and mother Nadra, came to Oslo from, respectively, Basrah (at age 4) and Um-Qasr (at age 13). As a young adult, Adel worked as a police officer in Oslo, and initially loved the job, but grew disenchanted: the decades leading up to the Fall, wracked with political, economic, and environmental unrest, caused much resentment toward People Not Like Us. Even liberal Scandinavia saw an upswing in racism. Adel faced subtle slights within the department, and both Adel and Nadra faced several overt incidents while among the other citizens. At the same time, the Martian colonies were mushrooming, and the primordial city states faced a shortage of people to keep the peace in the frontier towns. Seeing this opportunity, the young couple sold off all their Earthly possessions, placed themselves in suspended animation, and had themselves transported to the new world. They thrived on the new world. Adel worked as a cop for two more decades, as both Adel and Nadra discovered they had a talent for politics. Adel rose within the department hierarchy, and eventually was elected to public office. As of the present date, the family has a modicum of wealth, favors, and contacts; and Adel is a moderately-powerful elected official in Noctis City, his power akin to a real-life state senator or member of a city council for a large city. While they were expanding their power, the couple also moved most of their extended family to Mars, while having four children of their own. Bashir Al-Ashari was born in BF 26, Noctis City, the third child. As a child, he greatly admired his dad, and ended up following in his footsteps, becoming a police officer for the NQPD. Soon he was working as a detective in the organized crimes division. One of his early assignments was investigating the connections of a politician to the Moderates gang. This would not have been so unusual, except that the politican was Robert Shao, a rival politician to his father. But, Bashir kept his quiet, for the time, and was, indeed, able to find evidence against Shao. The evidence never saw any trial. It turned out that, indeed, Bashir's father had engineered the investigation. And, rather than attempt to proecute Shao, Adel was going to hold the evidence as blackmail material against him. Disgusted, Bashir soon left the NQPD. He wandered briefly before settling in a small town in Amazonias, and joining the Amazonias Rangers, away from his father's web of influence. Among his various duties were participating in SAR missions through the Martian wilderness, where he grew to love the rugged countryside. Then the Fall came. All of Bashir's family faired fine, except for Bashir himself. Who died for the first time in his life during some skirmishes with TITAN weaponry. His mind was then loaded into a Synth morph, as per his request should he die. Although his somewhat traditional family were not thrilled by the new, now-metalic, Bashir, Bashir was thrilled to now be able to operate compltely unprotected and unsupported on the Martian surface. In the decade since the Fall, Bashir has continued on with the Martian Rangers. Besides falling in love with the Martian wilderness, he also discovered a love of aviation, and has since trained to fly various atmospheric craft to support SAR activities. Character personality: He has grown somewhat cynical over the years. Not just learning about his family's crookedness, but also dealing with various street criminal scum doing stupid, pointless crimes; and, also observing criminal scum of the Suit sort, creating a system to disenfanchise the various Martian underclasses. He loves Mars. He hopes that, sooner or later, Mars will be free of the influence of the aforementions criminal scum in suits sorts. He has an ambiguous relationship with his family. His parents not only being, as most people in this setting, transhuman immortals, but also politically powerful transhuman immortals. He has tried to assert his independence from them, but, during various trying times, has used them to provide favors. He is now in his mid-30s, but still often feels child-like in his relation with them. Motivations: +Martian Liberation +Socialism +Personal Development: Stop being the prodigal son Living friends and family: In his immediate family, besides his parents, Bashir has an older brother, and older sister, and a younger brother. He is closest to his brother Khalil, the oldest child. Khalil also desires more independence from their parents, but has taken that desire to a more extreme level: Khalil, a biologoist by training, ended up joing a gate crashing mission/colony. He also has a fairly sizeable extended family on Mars. He gets along okay with his father's side, but does not like many on his mother's side, who tend to be fairly traditional/bioconverative. Most of his family is Islamic, to one degree or another. Bashir is not, but is a cloested agnostic, bordering on atheist. The only family member he has come out to about his lack of religion is Khalil. He still participates in various religious rituals, but these no longer carry any supernatural content for him, but are rather a way to bond with family and an observance of ethnic traditions. Bashir is also bisexual. He has come out to his entire immediate family, who are all at least liberal enough to acccept this. He has a long-term, but on-and-off, boyfriend, Azim Dumont, who also works as a Ranger. He hasn't come out to any of his extended family, but he suspects that they suspect that his occasional male "acquaintences" are more than. Living enemies and rivals: Shao, the politician he collected dirt on is still around. And still at political parity with Bashir's father. Although Bashir tries to distance himself from his family, he is, at times, a victim of "collateral damage" from the political fights. Plot hooks: * expose Robert Shao for father * keep father's skeletons in closet * xenozoologist brother is a gate crasher--some disaster could befall his colony
edit: spoiler-tagged the description so you don't have to scroll through it if you don't want to edit, again: it helped that I finally read the Inner System sourcebook's Mars chapter this afternoon. I am modifying his story slightly, saying that he was in the Martian Rangers, and also filling in the $BLANK_SPACES If it'd fit into the story that he's still in the Rangers, he can be. If it'd fit better that he's no longer a Ranger, I can say he's just doing SAR work now.

Well if you are still looking for players that is. I'm thinking of some kind of battle zone forensics expert. Something like CSI: the FALL, baywatch mixed with dexter. Well ignore that last sentence. More seriously I'm feeling like either a hardline bought into the hypercorp cool-aid character or a barsomian ish emergency responder who is shocking overqualified to be an ambulance "driver"

I realize you were looking for 1-3, and I actually make 4 by my count: cglasgow plus four: elric225 boomzilla kindalas NewonPulsifer I live in Pacific Daylight Time and Mon-Wed is probably the best time for me (especially if weekly). I could probably make other days work, but maybe not weekly. My character concept is a husband/wife team. I realize there's no real "rules" for such but I could essentially amalgamate them into one ego, or have a disadvantage where I lose some skills/aptitudes if I don't have a morph that can run parallel egos. The idea is they're both relatively famous (and controversial -taking both You're That Guy AND Wait, That Was You? traits) over 100 year old minor net celebrities. They're probably going to have atrociously busy social schedules so will have a bewildering array of beta forks out at any one time. Emphasis is probably social/networking/mesh with some empath async abilites. Maybe some decent piloting/aircar skills.

You should totally make Dexter 2159! It would actually be easier for him, as he could just repeatedly re instantiate and re-kill his "victims". Nate

Hi all,
Hi all, It's looking like we've got enough interest to make this happen! My size cap for a game is five players, so as of right now, we're fine. If more people express interest, then I'll just pick the five character concepts that work best for the game I've got in mind, and keep the rest in mind if anyone drops. As weekday evenings (US Central) work best for me, right now it's looking like Monday or Tuesday is going to be best day. Can anyone not make one or both of those evenings? Either one works fine for me, with the caveat that Nightwish is playing in Oklahoma City on the 9th and I'm going to see them, which would mean that if we decide on Tuesday, it would be the 16th before we could start playing. So a few questions on scheduling, then: how late can those of you in Eastern stay up for gaming, and how early can we begin Pacific time? I'd like to have about a four hour block of time for the game each week...would 8pm - midnight central work?

I like tuesdays
Mostly because Castle is on Mondays and that's TV I'll actually watch with commercials. My character submission is coming together nicely. So far he is a vastly overqualified ambulance pilot. As for technology I prefer to use a chat format over a cam and speak setup as there is a lot of people traffic around my computer area.

Kindalas - I don't do video
Kindalas - I don't do video/voice chat, so you're safe on that front. I far, far prefer text-based gaming, and have since I first played on MUSHes back in the mid-1990s. Since the Eclipse Phase MUSH seems to be down, I'm inclined to use AIM, personally, since it has a basic dice roller built in, although I'm open to other options. Looks like the consensus is that Tuesday works best. NP, what's the earliest you can be online on Tuesdays?

AOL Instant Messenger chat is great! The games I've already been in online, we used AIM chatroom. Note: If anyone doesn't like the modern client and wants a copy of the old AOL version (the only thing AOL ever made that actually fucking worked), you can find it here. http://www.oldversion.com/AOL-Instant-Messenger.html I use v5.9.3861 myself. cglasgow wrote:Behold the new
cglasgow wrote:
This is based off the info you emailed me, rather than what's here, but here are some comments: 1. Curing all/hundreds of thousands of rusters of their need for GSPs: No. The biggest issue is that you don't get to make changes to the setting of the scale that you're talking about in the character's backstory -- that's the kind of thing that should be happening in the game! I think you can still get the overall effect you're going for through scaled back means, though. First, creating his own cure and distributing it for free is certainly within his skillset, but every specific brand/model of ruster is going to have different GSP needs -- there's not one cure, there's dozens (the different hypercorps want to make sure you come to one of _their_ authorized GSP providers, after all -- can't have some third party make all the money.) So my suggestion is this: the team he was part of cracked one of the more common lines of Ruster currently produced by one of the major hypercorps, and publicly spread the cure to underground clinics across Mars that would have the facilities to do the gene therapy required. Hundreds if not thousands of people that would never have been able to afford it otherwise no longer need GSPs. That's still a big boost in @-rep and plenty of hot water for those responsible, as a major hypercorp has more than enough influence to make life on Mars utterly miserable for those responsible. If caught and convicted (the latter being a virtual certainty if the former happened), they'd be facing at best decades of indentured servitude until they'd recouped the lost income plus interest for the hypercorp, plus additional fines for patent violations and the like. So his family getting him out of it and allowing him to still have even the semblance of a normal life would take a _lot_ of string pulling even still, so his explanation for the lack of c-rep or the Allies positive trait is still intact. I would also suggest, as you mentioned at one point in this thread or the other, taking both You're that guy! and Wait, that was you? to reflect the positive and negative notoriety that he gained from what happened. 2. Why is a non-military doctor wearing heavy body armor? (Also, you forgot to put a quantity of 1 on the helmet, but you've got plenty of credits for it.) Not saying you absolutely can't have a doctor running around in military gear, but it just seems like overkill for someone in his position. Might I suggest a standard vacsuit (7/7 armor base) with the same mods and a second skin (1/3 armor) instead? That still gives him pretty good protection, but I think it would fit better for a SAR team. Also bear in mind that you'll get assigned gear for specific missions, so if you _do_ get sent somewhere hostile enough to need combat armor, you'll get access to it.

* What major setting change?
* What major setting change? "The Cure" is mentioned in fluff text in Sunward (page 98), so the thing already exists in canon. I just chose to deal myself into it in a minor role. And possibly to tweak it a bit so that instead of 'a few months of gene therapy', we refined it into something more practical to deploy on a wider scale, or made it cheap enough that a dude doesn't have to scrimp for years to afford it anymore, or something else that's still a big net benefit to the rusters without totally changing the setting. IOW, your suggested modification works... except for the part where we're all wanted by the law, except me. That part I am not going for. One, this means I have 10 former teammates who are getting screwed horribly while I'm not, and by David's character that means he'd have to try and do something about it. Against the full might of the Planetary Consortium. And that encounter is way, way outside my Challenge Rating, to slip into d20 speak for a moment. And two, it means that one of my major character development subplots is already over -- because the instant my family withdraws its protection, I either have to flee to the Outer System (which takes me out of the game) or else Oversight is going to leave me staring at my own cortical stack from the outside for the next 50 years. Which means they've already won, because they've totally got me by the balls. If their continued good will is the only reason I'm not dead yet, then I'm being an idiot to keep thumbing my nose at them like I actually still have a choice. I did not put 'Common Sense' on my character sheet because I wanted to RP an idiot. So, your modifications on scope are not only all right (and more in line with my mental images to begin with than 'everybody sick on Mars is now healed! hallelujah!'), but the illegality thing ain't. So, here's what we did; we came up with a genetic treatment that works on a couple of the commoner brands of ruster morphs, but its our treatment. This gene therapy removes the need for the GSPs on those models by tackling the root causes of the metabolic failure. And since we invented it from scratch, instead of pirating any hypercorp's work, its legal. The Planetary Consortium has not outlawed innovation, merely patent theft. Since we didn't commit the latter (and they can't actually go to the extent of passing a law saying 'no one is allowed to help rusters at all' without precipitating the very widespread labor crisis they're trying to avoid), legally we're free and clear! Although I wouldn't advise any of us to change lanes without proper turn signals any time soon, or be late paying property tax, or... (Plus, of course, next years' models of ruster morphs -- or the update packs on the models our cure doesn't work on yet -- will totally contain newer and more interesting forms of metabolic failure, of course. And so things will continue until some other science flash mob does a wildcat research effort to obsolete that generation of DNA algorithm, and so the battle continues...) Of course, our treatment is not approved by the Consortium's equivalent of the FDA, but that's not a crime on us; we (the individuals on the Ruster Cure team) are not actually involved in manufacturing and selling it. (Remember, manufacture and dispensing of unlicensed pharmaceuticals is a crime on the people actually moving the pills/vials/nano, not the guy who invented the formula for them.) We just did a piece of medical research, then slapped a Creative Commons license on it and posted it to the mesh! What those durn Barsoomians do with it then is, officially, not our problem! :) IOW, a legal dodge, but a legal dodge that doesn't saddle me with 20+ CP worth of disads I chose not to take. More to the point, a legal dodge that does not evaporate in-play any time the DM feels like, leaving me with 20 CP of disads I didn't choose to take and am not getting paid for... well, not unless the Planetary Consortium wants to go to the extent of doing a blatant ex post facto bill of attainder in public, which I don't imagine them doing because it would break their careful illusion of 'no, you live in a free cyberdemocracy, you get to vote and everything!'. Which is why the Ruster Cure team is such an embarassment for the hypercorps involved -- we found a way to get it done without actually breaking any laws, and to where the Consortium can't do a legal tap-back on it without making an even bigger PR embarassment for themselves than the one they already have going. This is also why the 11 scientists on the team would ever risk to publish their IDs at all, instead of doing an anonymous mesh dump and running like hell for the Neptunian Trojans. You can't get @-rep for something unless you publicly admit you did it, after all, and we'd be absolute idiots to have publicly admitted to this unless we'd actually found a solid legal loophole first. As for man-on-the-street as opposed to official notoriety; again, there's more than enough wiggle room to make me infamous as hell, or to say 'The Planetary Consortium dropped the public news blackout on this hardcore', or anywhere in between. (Note that David did not take any f-rep). So, if you actually go on the mesh to read anarchist or argonaut blogs, or watch downloads of Outer System news shows, or actually reading rep profiles on the Circle-A rather than just pulling my aggregate score, then you'll know all about it... but if you rely solely on Experia or other PC-approved for your news, you'll never have heard a word. Or I've been on prime time newsmagazine shows about it. Your call. * You mentioned earlier that we had to pay for our standard loadout at work, including sidearm and body armor, and list them on our character sheets. Since you described our work as rescue in hazardous environments, I figured company issue for that would be the toughest environment suit possible to make, complete with all the hazmat features. (Which is why it has immunogenic, lotus, fireproofing, and guardian nano). Sure, the local firemen are wearing vac suits, but you implied we were a tier above that and/or going through gates, so, I upgraded the gear. After all, I'm not aware of heavy body armor taking any movement penalty in this game (correct me if I'm wrong), so it would actually be cheaper for the company to just issue us the heavy-model Hazardous Environment Suit and nothing else then it would be for them to pay for two different sets of armor for us and switch them out as per mission. My mental image is that we were going to be the rescue squad that got all the nightmare cases -- so a day at work for us could involve going into buildings that are not only on fire, but full of four different kinds of hazmat, radioactive contamination, and out-of-control disassembler nano. So I built the Hazardous Environment Suit as being the toughest thing we could buy off-the-shelf without actually getting into exoskeleton gear or other things we aren't trained to use, and nobody except Direct Action could hope to get a license for anyway.

Question:
Question: For gear, if I want the nanofabber plans, do I pay one higher rating for them? Should I do something similar if I want a "legally purchased" AI program that has relaxed copy protection on it (like a Sensor AI that I can instance 20 times). So like a low cost medium pistol would cost medium for the fabber plans and an "unlocked" high cost AI would cost expensive?

* What major setting change? "The Cure" is mentioned in fluff text in Sunward (page 98), so the thing already exists in canon. I just chose to deal myself into it in a minor role. And possibly to tweak it a bit so that instead of 'a few months of gene therapy', we refined it into something more practical to deploy on a wider scale, or made it cheap enough that a dude doesn't have to scrimp for years to afford it anymore, or something else that's still a big net benefit to the rusters without totally changing the setting.
The cure, as implied in Sunward, is 'go to the manufacturer and pay the premium for the genetic fixes that were deliberately excluded from the model', yes. Or, conversely, 'go to an illegal genehacker and pay them to do it'. I agree with you completely that the need for GSPs can be overcome. There's a huge gulf between that, though, and 'this method that the hypercorps use as a revenue stream and to exert control over the masses...it basically doesn't exist anymore', which is what I took away from what you sent me. That's the part that I took issue with as a backstory element as opposed to an in-game event. If what you were intending was 'we researched and put an open source version of a number of major fixes out there' then that's far less drastic, I agree.

IOW, your suggested modification works... except for the part where we're all wanted by the law, except me. That part I am not going for.
Okay, cool. That approach I'm good with -- I think I was just filling in gaps in ways that weren't at all what you had in mind based on the impression that you were aiming for something far more drastic than what you actually had in mind.
Quote:
What you're envisioning for the team mission is pretty much what I have in mind, and no, heavy armor doesn't take a mobility penalty, so it's fine on that front. Both factors for why I'm not saying you can't have it -- you can. Just bear in mind that damage resistance isn't necessarily the best measure of what constitutes a good suit for rescue work. You need _some_ damage resistance, definitely, and the mods you chose are very appropriate, but for example, you get 12 hours of air from a sealed combat suit. You get 48 hours from a standard vacsuit, unlimited food/water and waste recycling, and improved temperature tolerance, even over what your morph innately provides (your morph is -30 to 60; a standard vacsuit is -175 to 140.) The sensory systems (ecto, radio booster, specs) are identical. So you get more operating endurance out of a vacsuit, and they're better for a wider array of environments. Up to you whether the tradeoff is worth it or not.

Briareos

Boomzilla, I'm going to be unable to imagine Bashir except as suited up in a Briareos-from-appleseed battlesuit.
That's actually why I chose the avatar--I started to picture his synthmorph as looking like Briareos, particularly that character's head. The explanation being that the five eyes are various visual exhancements (lidar, multispectral vision, etc) and the rabbit ears are radar (I'm adding a bunch of sensory cyberware). :D Anyway, I'll try to get his stats completed ASAP.

Outstanding! Then how does 7pm - 11pm Central sound to everyone, instead? That puts us within tolerable limits for everyone, based on what's been posted.

If we're gatecrashing
Edit: You know more about what threats are going to be in your adventures than I do, so, changed to a smart standard vacsuit. But if I get my limbs gnawed off by something that the heavy armor could have stopped, I reserve the right to say 'I told you so'. :) Also, the Life Support Pack (pg. 159, Gatecrashing) sounds like a piece of company-issue gear to request that we be issued, if they anticipate sending us through some gate where we won't get breathable atmosphere for days and days.

Don Bellanino - Hypercorp Socialite/Negotiator/Oligarch
Don is an age 100+ year old relatively famous man married to an even more famous wife. He has big plans for SAR (his current role is "Crisis Manager"), and annoyingly, is good friends with all of the "black sheep" PC's parents. He is great as spinning the media, and has many friends in high places.
Spoiler: Highlight to view
Character Concept: Hypercorp Socialite/Negotiator/Oligarch History: Donato "Don" Bellanino was born way back in 2015 in Cinque Terra, and had none of the fame, wealth, and political connections he has now. His father was a (usually unemployed) garage inventor supported by Don's mother, who was an accountant. He led a relatively normal life as a minor league soccer player until he met and married his wife Ederra Tinker at the age of 30. Her parents were the daughter of a UK Prime Minister, and her father a professional F1 race car driver (a vocation she also pursued successfully). They became a minor net/media sensation, as the couple was very photogenic. With the help of Ederra's family, Don retired from sports and eventually worked his way into a successful career in politics and business. When disaster struck long after his political career had already included two extended retirements (his career includes previous stints as Prime Minister of Cyprus etc.), Don was a face many saw on the mediacasts. He was instrumental in coordinating the Balinese Space Elevator evacuation, eventually "going down with the ship". His ego was re-instantiated as a ghost rider with his wife, but it turns out either enemies of his, or more likely "friends" edited his memories. He's determined to make a landfall in Bali someday to find out what really happened...of course he needs to groom a likely team for such an eventuality. Personality: Don is a hedonist at heart. He comes across as one used to command, and can sometimes appear to be intimidating to the faint of heart. He can come across as quite humble to those who engage him, and is always quick with a self-deprecating humorous anecdote to put people at ease. The advance of transhumanist technology has allowed Don to multitask constantly. He's invariably doing something completely leisure related even when he seems to be working. Sometimes he's not quite as discreet about it as he should be (its a common sight for other PCs he's "friended" to see a flurry of facebook style communications going on even as he's supposed to be giving his full attention to say a boardmember's meeting). Friends and Family: Many of the elite that Don knew in his day are long dead. Don is eagerly courted by some members of the Planetary Consortium, and held at arms length by others due to reclaimer friendly things he's said publicly. His home was on Venus when Venus made the political split from the Planetary Consortium, which left him in a somewhat uncomfortable position as he had opposed the Venusian secession, as well as temporarily torpedoing his political career. He's techically a citizen of Venus but seen as friendly to seeing Venus re-join the Consortium. Don has taken up a job as management/liaison/etc. with SAR. He hopes to groom it as a successful hypercorp in its own right. Friends and Family: Don has taken the job as a special favor to his close friends the Al-Ashari's and Pournelle-Kinrosses, to keep an eye on their "black sheep" and spin media control as necessary in the background. Don's wife Ederra Tinker is a force of nature herself. The couple is often referred to as "Tinkerbell" in the gossip rags. Don has a daughter who followed his lead into politics. Perhaps as a reaction to her parent's sometimes profligate party lifestyle, she developed into a staunch conservative and currently lives in the Jovian Republic, along with most of her many descendants. Several of his descendants have ego-cast themselves from the Jovian Republic to Mars to live with "Grandpa Don", and this has led to them not speaking for the last 2 years. Currently half a dozen of Don's descendants live at the "Tinkerbell" compound in Valles-New Shanghai. Enemies/Rivals: Whomever was responsible for Don's memory edit clearly doesn't regard him as a threat any longer. Don has friends among those who were against the Venus secession, as well as Consortium interests that aren't too afraid of mild pro-reclaimer stance. Don has a friendly rivalry with various society types, and makes bets with them all the time (and often plays the face-to-face poker game, which he is particularly good at). He abuses the legal 4-hour limit on Beta forks quite a bit to "multi-task" and spend more time with his friends and family. Character Traits: Intuition and Savvy - Intimidation, Deception, Perception, Kinesics, Allies trait

Yes, blueprints are one level higher than the cost of the item, and the same thing would be true for AIs with a multiple-use license, because it's essentially giving you as many copies of the item as you need. I will note that nanofabrication of most weapons or explosives would be illegal for the general public in the PC, as mentioned under the item description of the various fabbers. That said, if you're wanting legal weapon blueprints, just let me know what the end goal of having it is -- we can probably figure something out.

Works for me. Are we starting this evening, or next week? If we're starting this evening, I need to hurry up and complete my stats, then.
