Eidetic Memory and Mathematics
This is a question that's bugging me. Eclipse Phase has Math Boost and Eidetic Memory as mental implants under bioware, which means it's an organic augmentation, with similar changes possible for synthmorphs. Thing is, resleeving to me always came across as recreating the brain architecture piece by piece elsewhere. The brain that is created, be it physical or a digital emulation, is a recreation of what was there before. Augmentations merely change this. My thought is, how can there be a distinction between Eidetic Memory as an ego trait and morph trait? Same for Math Wiz, of course. Logically, if that's how ego transfers work, those traits would go with it in the recreation of the brain architecture. Of course, I then ask in turn what the difference is in buying the implant and buying the trait, apart from cost? Wouldn't either one get transferred into the neural architecture of each morph in turn?

Re: Eidetic Memory and Mathematics
It's unlikely the entire brain gets transferred over. For instance, there are parts of the hindbrain which control movement and digestion in your body. That is pretty morph-specific, and is unlikely to go with you when you resleeve. In fact, the amount of grey matter that's really important (your personality, memories, preferences, etc.) is probably not a huge ratio of the entire brain. So there's plenty of space up there to implant an additional neural implant. I would expect that the implant and the trait draw on different parts of the brain (one would be like knowledge, which is transferred, and one is... something else). The trait is better because it comes with you when you change morphs.

Re: Eidetic Memory and Mathematics
The thing is, it begs the question of why/how the Eidetic Memory implant is different from natural Eidetic Memory. One seems to be entirely like the other, and I'm not sure how the neural architecture for one can be transferred and yet the other cannot, especially when it comes to digital emulation. Just seems sort of arbitrary, is all.

Re: Eidetic Memory and Mathematics
As a GM, I'm not against the idea of someone getting the eidetic memory implant such that it stays with the character when he changes morphs. However, it would have to be a 'new version', to make up for its limited market and that it would reduce repeat sales for the hypercorps. In general though, it's such a minor issue I don't think it's really worth stressing over.

Re: Eidetic Memory and Mathematics
Makes sense. The current Bioware could be deliberately modified that the way it works is not transferrable somewhow, and a permanent version is available for an [Expensive] purchase, making it effectively buying the trait. Same with the Math Wiz thing.

Re: Eidetic Memory and Mathematics
Presumably, it's just some kind of 'co-processor' that your ego makes use of, as with Mnemonic Augmentation with all the cyberbrains. The ego trait is part of how your own brain works, instead. I can see how a distinction would be possible.

Re: Eidetic Memory and Mathematics
One way I have worked through this is to make the Eidetic Memory trait purchasable with Rez if the character sleeves into a morph with the implant.
