Next Set of X-Prizes to Include AI and Human Enhancement Priorities
I haven't seen anyone discuss this yet... www.ecofriendlymag.com/sustainable-transporation-and-alternative-fuel/x-... ...but the X-Prize Foundation intends to launch US $100 million in X-Prizes over the next decade, targeting 4 key areas. Of those four, their life-science priorities include: quote/ * Neurobiology: brain-computer interface, imaging, learning, memory, consciousness, decision making. * Human 2.0 Devices: bionics (assistive and additive), artificial skin/limb/joints/sensory substitutes (e.g. prosthetic eye, haptics). * Personalized Medicine: risk assessment, disease prevention, early detection, therapy, response monitoring, Tx/Rx development. * Healthcare Advancement: cost of care/reimbursement, quality of care, compliance, disease surveillance, electronic medical records. * Physician Augmentation/Telemedicine: artificial intelligence physician, disease prevention, patient diagnosis, acute care management, disease management. /quote So, gear up, would be Transhumans and other radical-augmentation/AI/consciousness-uploading researchers. There's a grant/X-Prize to be won!

Cool. That suggests an idea: research prizes in the EP setting. Some groups, be they the Planetary Consortium, the Titanians, a hypercorp or a rich criminal, announce prizes for the research team who solves key problems. The problems might be everything from making a really effective nanoswarm to demonstrating FTL transport of matter to making a wormhole to finding a living alien species beside the Factors. Firewall might use a cover identity to stimulate research into some anti-risk measure such as a defence against basilisk hacks or the exsurgent virus. PCs could become involved in the race towards one of the prizes. It could be a bit like the setup in Greg Egan's "Distress", where it is clear that one of the three teams will come up with the TOE very soon - lots of espionage, conflicts and outside groups trying to influence things. Or they could be one of the teams, maybe trying to perfect their magnetic monopole drive or get their experimental spacetime gate to work.
