A New Article on Eclipse Phase (Shameless Self-Promotion)
Howdy! So, I've been writing for a tabletop gaming review site for a few months now, and they've let me rant about science fiction RPGs for the last couple months. In my most recent article, I've basically sung the praises of Eclipse Phase. http://www.cardboardrepublic.com/articles/up-on-a-soapbox/the-trouble-wi... Please feel free to take a look at it, and the other articles if you feel inclined.

Read the article; very nice.
Read the article; very nice. I've added Cardboard Republic's RSS feed to my feedly. :) (I really like the "What Type Of Gamer Are You?" section. I'm totally an Architect) I have to agree on one very pertinent point: your criticism of the dice mechanic. That's actually been the most major sticking point in my group, with the greatest criticisms levied against it, and you've summed up the issues there quite well. We've actually been engaged in some fairly extensive theoretical discussions of potential alternate dice mechanics for the system, so I'm pleased to see that this feeling is not limited in scope to just my own group. Beyond that, you did a wonderful job of encapsulating the setting without getting bogged down in the details (my own curse in telling people about the game), so I'm definitely bookmarking it for later sharing with potential players!

Thanks for the feedback! We
Thanks for the feedback! We'll be bringing that article series to a close next week, and returning to some of my more usual You Should Be Playing articles after that for a bit. Regarding the dice and the system, I'm interested in the Eclipse Phase FATE adaptation, because that is an interesting movement with the system. I hope you like our future articles!

I think that with ANY system,
I think that with ANY system, the GM needs to apply some common sense when gauging what success and failure means. If a PC tries to understand a scientific paper and he's a layman, the range will go from grasping the overall idea to misunderstanding it. For a high-caliber scientist in the field it will go from seeing possible directions for future research to missing some minor details. It doesn't matter how much the mechanics skew the odds, a critical success for the layman SHOULD be worse than the scientist's critical failure. All systems fail without the GM taking that into account.
