New 3D Virtual Tabletop - Possible custom content from Eclipse Phase?
Hi everybody, We are working on a 3d Virtual tabletop called SkCombat (or Sketch Combat), while we're still in the beginning of creating our first premium tilesets and miniatures, our plans are to incorporate various settings and eras to the app so you can play fantasy games or futuristic games like Eclipse Phase. We were wondering if we could do an Eclipse Phase themed tileset with custom miniatures for morphs and the like. There would be copyright issues? To whom we should contact and how? Would people be interested in it?

About "premium"
Premium content are paid textured tilesets and miniatures. The App itself is free and it comes with a fairly great library of free tilesets as some free miniatures. So it would fall onto the commercial use ... but we don't plan to use rules or book content apart from names (Bouncer, Futura, Octomorphs, etc) and create those miniatures based on the book art. I suppose we could create them without the names, but it would be cooler if we could group it in an "Eclipse Phase pack" or something like that.

at which point i think its best if you contact post human directly rather than waiting for a response on the board. Cool concept though

But how?
Well ... I'm not fond of automated contact forms, or simply sending e-mails, it seems like most of them get lost in the limbo so I wondered if someone knew a better way. Aaaaaand, let's not forget about it, I want to see if people are interested in this. I could put a link the website of the App, but I fear it could be seen as spamming the forums.

http://posthumanstudios.com/contact-us/ ya its an e-mail form and they have a caveat there about soliciting for games but considering you are talking about their game i think it would be rather gray. and true interest gauging is always good and please post the link. I found it with a quick a google but some people are just lazy and there was a couple things going by the short hand name. sorry to say since i do not have a smartphone you are short 1 potential customer with me :(

I will try
Well the link is: http://yogurtforfun.com/index.php/projects/sketch-combat We have a windows standalone, a web plugin, a linux standalone and a mac standalone. It's not only for smartphones ... in fact the web plugin (that sadly only works on windows and macs) is designed to be used on Play-by-post games ;) All versions will let you save the maps in the Cloud so it's easy to share a map. I will try the email form anyway ... but I'm pretty sure I will not get an answer. It's been the trend on other sites for a while. Well ... I have to keep trying XD

I am not a lawyer, but... EP, including the art (except where otherwise noted,) is all distributed under the same license, as was linked above.

That would fall smack into the middle of "Commercial purposes," which seems likely to be a massive no-go. Remixing, transforming, or building upon the source material - for instance, creating miniatures for your application based on the image material in EP - would be perfectly permissable, as long as you make the appropriate attributions (in the legalese somewhere, name the artists who made the original art and the people behind posthuman studios,) don't make any money off them (which means you wouldn't be able to sell the EP-derived stuff, including the names and pictures thereof,) and your continuations of EP-derived stuff were distributed under the same license, which I imagine would mean making the tilesets available as image files for anyone to grab and use as they saw fit.

Posthuman is very forgiving
Posthuman is very forgiving by allowing everyone to use their stuff as long as it isn't commercial, much more than most publishers. That doesn't mean that they are eternally opposed to anyone making paid content with their IP - maybe they, maybe they are not, but you need an agreement with them, just like with everyone else. I you don't have a strong track record I suspect your product needs to be finished, high quality and have documented long term support before you have much of a chance to even talk to someone about using their license.

I see

That's quite an inconvenient truth. I suppose I have a bad chance for the moment on doing something like this ... well I will send the e-mail anyway while we continue to work on the App (we recently reached the 5000 users mark on the android marketplace, wohoo!). And we are working on some generic content for modern/futuristic games ... which will come handy, as I'm DMing 5 play by post forum games :)

If you build up your user
If you build up your user base with indie games and/or people just using generic stuff for mainstream games, and your product is good, then you can get there. All I'm saying is that established games don't want their trademark on something that will end up unsupported and buggy. You will need to demonstrate that you have a real product that can generate revenue (if it turns a profit you're motivated to keep it going even though you lose personal interest in it as a fun project). If you can demonstrate that generic content can sell, you'll also have a much easier time making a deal with publishers. If I were you I would invest time in expanding and selling some content packages before you approach publishers.

You could always send a Private Message to the developers; RobBoyle posts on the forum fairly regularly, so it seems like a reasonable way to try contacting him.
