I imagine that if they critfail their Programming (Nanofabrication) test that badly, they'd probably just feed it back into the feedstock vat and try again. They'd only have to wait another five hours or so.

I could see this sort of architecture if it was built from a nanofoundary seed, especially if the seeds had been sent one way, ahead of time, to make a place habitable. I imagine a series of microgravity habs in the Trojans that were supposed to be mining platforms for the Jovian Republic. Maybe the intense radiation around Jupiter caused some errors in the blueprint while the seeds were in transit, and now these habs are left for whoever can stand living in them. I can also imagine a population of infogees who decided that pet bodies were a perfect and cheap substitute for a case, so they sleeve into space roaches and live wherever people won't set them on fire. Another idea is a "popcorn" hab, where instead of a nanoforge or a nanoseed, a ball of foamed steel is impregnated with buckyballs containing gasses that are supposed to pop and expand in a particular way to create a full structure, but sometimes go nutty when exposed to heat or radiation. There would be no particular reason to remelt them, as they still sort of work.
