kicking around story ideas, need feedback
I was kicking around story ideas and I went back to some of the listed source material from the main rule book (and some forum posts). In Chasm City (by Alistair Reynolds), the author mentions something called an 'indoctrination virus'. In that book, the virus is largely used by religious cults to 'infect' people with their doctrine and beliefs. To me, this seems like the sort of technology that would be within the capability of a couple factions in Eclipse Phase and I plan on developing the idea a bit further...what i'm looking for is: 1. is this within the realms of possibility of the Eclipse Phase universe? 2. if so, what sort of uses would an indoctrination virus be put too by factions? I'm leaning towards the TITANS creating a variation of an indoctrination virus (variant basilisk hack?) then a couple hypercorps trying to reverse engineer it into the ultimate ad campaign or political tool.

Re: kicking around story ideas, need feedback
I've never read chasm city. does it have to be a basilisk hack? It could be something as simple as infection by PIPA nanites that infect mesh inserts or a PIPA virus that infects AI. Think of the power of subverting a persons MUSE or mesh implants. Gradually, they only learn the Memes that (evil mind subverting power) wants them to. They're bombarded continually by virus coded with Persuasion skillware and everytime they fail to resist they violate one of their own listed motivations or temporarily gain a specific motivation. (Speaking of which, I'd like to see mesh based diseases for AI and cyberbrains)

Mea Culpa: My mode of speech can make others feel uninvited to argue or participate. This is the EXACT opposite of what I intend when I post.

1. Yes, various ways of technolgy could be misused/utilized to indoctrinate/brainwash a population. A high tech version would be using Petals, a low tech would be propaganda pyramid sale of "honest" right timed persuasion. 2. Depends on the organisation behind it. pyramid rep gain, disposable agents, inciting conflict, fixing elections. Player paranoia aside. Skip the Titan responsible for it, Dragons loose their charm & become vanilla if they show up to often. However one scenario is that a nasty indoctrination virus have successfully brainwashed a imprisoned TITAN infected making Firewall interested in acquiring samples of the "brainwash" drug/petal. Despite that they arnt that optimistic or gullible of its "success".

Re: kicking around story ideas, need feedback
Another great source for ideas about indoctrination viruses is Greg Egan's "Quarantine". The most profound indoctrination virus would act through psychosurgery, patching the ego with new neural pathways instilling the right views. This is 1) hard to do, 2) has to get through software/bodily security, so it is likely just something the most powerful groups possess. If the virus slips up it can damage the ego too. However, petals show that one can make things much easier. Petal users give the flower access to their bodies and minds, and suddenly half of the trouble is gone. Just put your malware in the flower, cover it with some desirable experiences and emotions (or cash prizes!) Even simpler things would be something that stays resident but gives rewards/punishments depending on actions of thoughts. Rather than trying to edit a full ego, it just monitors for certain patterns and then gives a subtle sense of pleasure or unease. Through this operant conditioning the subject is steered towards the desired behaviour. Then you can start thinking about outsourcing this to smart objects. Hacking spimes and vehicles is easier than persons. What about a virus that infects your personal environment that subtly punishes or rewards you (when you swear the car jerks, donating some money to a beggar for a moment makes your suit feel like silk), sends subliminal ads at you (you can *almost* hear a hymn somewhere in the background) and might be leaking personal information to help missionaries just happening to come by...

Re: kicking around story ideas, need feedback
well...my idea was that a semi-rogue Cognite executive is researching basilisks hacks. he's got fragments of TITAN code, but nowhere near enough to actually engineer the effect(s) he wants. Knowing research into this area is frowned upon by polite society yet understanding the market potential inherent to this sort of thing, he takes his code fragments and outsources/compartmentalizes the research to former associates. Of course, along the way things go wrong. One researcher accidentally engineers themselves an exsurgent infection. Another accidentally drives themselves and everyone in the local area insane and everyone goes on a murder spree, scrawling weird equations in the blood of their victims. A third achieves limited success, but doesn't understand what they've unleashed and sparks a religious holy war over different brands of soap. the idea was also to have a member of say...an evangelical christian cult get hold of some of the research and try to engineer themselves a religious revival of their particular flavor of divinity. But i'm liking the idea of one researcher accidentally making people have religious convictions over personal hygiene products and/or other very minor over the counter/impulse buy products. so the players would have to hit up the souk where this is happening and figure out why people from various social strata are obsessing and killing over something so inconsequential (along with weirdness such as why synthmorphs are buying aftershave lotion or whatever). hmm...actually, given the prevalence of so many morphs with clean metabolisms maybe not toothpaste. gum or candy, maybe. I'll think about that bit more.

Re: kicking around story ideas, need feedback
as for the indoctrination virus itself, i'm thinking it wouldn't be anything powerful enough to brute force hack every entopic display it comes arcross. I'm thinking it would act like a nanoplague - affecting implants and uploading subliminal ad campaigns/behavioral modfication programs to a target population's mesh inserts. People with medichines and the like would be largely immune (or just get very hefty bonuses to resist infection) but anyone else would be vulnerable. so people go out and get lip balm and end up getting infected with a mutant strain of Catholicism.

This encapsulates why I love this setting and the people who play in it.

that's not even one of my weirder ideas. Hell, if the writers were looking for freelancers I'd submit a few of my adventure ideas as proposals and see where we end up.

Re: kicking around story ideas, need feedback
You know weaver95 you could also stay on the Alastair Reynolds kick and have a chance for your indoctrination virus to go catastrophically awry and turn into something much like the Melding Plague from his later stories. It'd be a good platform to showcase the dangers of nanotech in the hands of the careless. Sure it's overkill beyond simply being turned into an evangelical nutcase, but instilling paranoia in players is always a good time :-). And you could have a great excuse for creating your super mutant-cyborg-exsurgent missionaries to unleash on the party.

Re: kicking around story ideas, need feedback
I have to admit, I like the idea of religious fanatics using nanotech/indoctrination virii to recruit people into their cult. I'm not above working a bit of social commentary into my games, especially if it moves my storyline along at the same time. And I think my players like the additional depth it adds to game night.

Re: kicking around story ideas, need feedback
I agree with Weaver - I'm fascinated with the idea of the role religion would play in the Eclipse Phase universe. Maybe could have a double twist in the story that some one religion was using this technology knowing it was not working correctly in order to create bad press for another sect. Or maybe an atheist conglomerate wanted to try to generate bad press for religion in general. Might justify in their heads that the destruction of a few morphs was worth ridding transhumanity of what it perceives to be a belief system that is a limitation on transhumanity's progress/survival.

Re: kicking around story ideas, need feedback
Since there is mention of some transhumans worshiping AGIs...how about an exsurgent infected AGI posing as the return of a prominent religious figure...who then begins to try and assimilate all transhumanity to its whims. Queue basilisk hacks, frightening religious fanatics, intrigue, iconic and heavily modified holy warrior morphs (furies, reapers, ghosts), and throw in some forced uploading for good measure. Ah religion...always good for some drama :-)

I think i'm gonna keep the TITANS outta this one...but, that said - how about a new and transhuman updated version of a Scientology type cult? Or maybe some rogue Cognite executives start playing around with basilisk hack technology/code and stumble on a way to 'infect' people with religious awe? they start pondering the idea of using this form of basilisk hack (which they don't really understand) and it goes some very strange places. maybe they spawn religious wars over lip balm. maybe they accidentally spur a religious revival movement among the poor and downtrodden. Or maybe someone steals the tech, reverse engineers it, and starts using it to push their faction's agenda (religious fanatic barsoomians anyone?) lots of ideas in there to use.

Re: kicking around story ideas, need feedback
I've always liked the "experiment on the undesirables" plot angle. Maybe there's a new religion that seems to be cropping up amongst the case synths? The cognite scientist or whomever is running a bunch of test experiments on "people that don't matter." Sure they could do simspace tests as is the norm (and not illegal), but she/he's already somewhat black-balled with the hypercorps and stuck in a "dead end" research posting with little to no access to the simspace resources that they need. So she/he finds it easier and oddly less conspicuous to conduct actual research on "free" Egos clanking around in synths. Sort of like big drug companies doing human testing in Africa for their medications since they can't do it through the FDA or EMA. It'd be an interesting way to lead in. Then escalate to a more polished/dangerous version of these ego hacks being spread via lip-balm to biomorphs (which makes me giggle miniacally thanks for that...I'm going to spread stuff with Blistex in my EP game at some point).

Re: kicking around story ideas, need feedback
Herbo - I think i'm gonna stick with the 'experiment with undesirables' theme. you make an excellent point: most of martian society doesn't give a damn about someone stuck in a synthmorph case. Olympia, for example, has a lot of synths walking/clanking around town. plus it gets pretty weird on the fringes of that town, only the city core is really well covered...and even that's getting run down these days. So one of the researchers is working for my big bad guy. He's a former member of the Lost project, kind of disgraced as a result of how it turned out. But out of the blue, his former boss from the project (whom he barely knows) offers him good money to work on a hush hush secret project. he just has to STFU, do what he's told and run the experiments/record the results. All of which he does...but along the way he exposes himself to a memetic attack and as a result he goes a bit crazy. long dormant, almost forgotten ideas about divinity and religion percolate through his brain and he starts to believe that he's been Chosen by God and that he has to do Gods work. his experiments still continue but now he's got a Mission. so he starts tainting his subjects with religious memes, sets up a cult in one of the abandoned souks on the fringes of Olympia and starts building a following. In almost no time at all, he's got himself a cult stronghold, a couple novacrab enforcers and a whole lotta synths attending mass every sunday to hear him preach. But things aren't well in paradise. the code our scientist was playing with wasn't complete, and his tampering only led to more instabilities. the memetic attack (a very watered down version of a basilisk hack) tends to destabilize and mutate over time. By the fourth generation the code is largely junk and essentially harmless...but along the way, it's now spawned no less than three different cult factions and Olympia has 'rogue' synths and artificial involved in what amounts to a holy war. The One True Faith is trying to keep a lid on the whole mess (our researcher is more than a bit insane by this point but he still understands the need for secrecy) but the heathens and unconverted are starting to realize that something ain't right with them folks on the fringes. it's at this point that Firewall gets involved - a spike in religious conviction and Jihad among synths is weird enough, but theres enough TITAN scrap code floating around now that it's most likely picked up by search bots Firewall crows use to scan for outbreaks of exsurgent activities. So they activate a local cell and tell them to investigate the weirdness and clean it up before Project Ozma or the hypercorps get involved.

Re: kicking around story ideas, need feedback
I just want to propose something a bit more insidious: Instead of indoctrination, you do mood shifting. You hack a person's mesh inserts and have their medichines start encouraging the growth of the person's brain in the direction you want. For example, say you want to break people of conservative memes, you reduce activity and growth of the amygdala, while encouraging growth in the anterior cingulate. Want to do the opposite? Invert the process. Then, you hack the person's muse and have it provide them with mesh stories that reinforce the viewpoint that you want to show, and emphasizing them in the person's news-stream. The muse chooses provocative headlines, and, bit by bit, the person grows more receptive to those memes. This method takes much longer but it is much more organic than any other. The person will never recall a singular moment when their philosophy changes, but, bit by bit, some stories appeal to them more, some less. Human psychology does the rest. This would be a great method for, if not indoctrinating them people, at least making people far more open to influence.
