JOOC, "fray"?

JOOC, "fray"?
AFAIK, "Fray" means the same as melee, a battle. I was just curious as to why the designers decided to call what in most games would be called "Dodge" fray instead? Wouldn't fray have been more fitting to melee combat skill since mostly fray means a combat, as in "When I saw the neocons attacking a pro-healthcare reform rally I leaped into the fray to clock some of them."? I'm not knocking EP, I'm not like some of the people who have made really unwarranted and undeserved attacks on the game and/or it's designers, I just wondered about this "fray" thing. I might have used it for close combat skill if I used it. I looked up fray online and the definitions I got were either a long, disorderly fight or to wear out, as in "frayed clothes'. I didn't see it as dodge anywhere...

I think the terminology here is meant to imply one's familiarity with combat situations as opposed to one's skill at combat (which is covered by the other combat skills) - and as just about anyone who's ever been in a combat situation will tell you, the most important thing you learn is how to keep out of the way of whatever your opponent is trying to kill you with.

Eh, maybe. I still think that since the fray skill is used out of combat, like when dodging something falling at you it should have been called dodge. Now if you want to use fray, which is Ok as gaming should encourage literacy, I'd have used it for melee, as in the phrase "Leap into the fray."

i think its a charming term, just a matter of semantics...though now that you mention it, i was thrown for a loop till i read the skill description.

Re: JOOC, "fray"?
Again, I have no problem with the term being used. I simply feel it would have been better used to describe the melee combat skill instead of dodging. Now, maybe "defray" would have worked for dodging, as in "I managed to defray being hit by the falling boulder." But "fray means either a big fight or wear and tear, as in "Man, my vac suit has gotten pretty frayed, I need a new one!"
