I've just been born, help me
Good day everyone, I'm new. This concept looks great, and really calls out to me. I've never played a Pen and Paper, or play by post. So what should I do? Can someone be Yoda on here?

Re: I've just been born, help me
Greetings, and welcome to the rest of your life! OK, so first things first, do you have a copy of the Eclipse Phase rulebook? If not, it is freely available from a multitude of different download locations (Legally, Posthuman use a Creative Commons license that means we can torrent the books to our little pirate hearts content). The rulebook contains basically everything you need to play (other than some dice and some friends) and should be your first acquisition. In there you will find a lot of information about the setting (which is expanded upon in books like Sunward and the upcoming release Gatecrashers), the rules for playing (Duh) and it is generally a very easy read. If you have indeed acquired a copy of the Eclipse Phase rulebook then I suggest you read that. If you do not want to read the entire book on one sitting then I instead suggest that you make sure to get your way through the ENTER THE SINGULARITY chapter as soon as you can. It will introduce you to many of the general concepts of a table top role-playing game and should help you get started. Because we are all such a friendly bunch of chappers if you have any questions after that I am sure we would be more than happy to answer them. If you have already done the two above, then instead I will ask this. What specifically are you looking for help with?

I guess CodeBreaker already covered everything I can think of, so welcome aboard!

i would add that you should download a character sheet to help sort out the chargen process, which is a bit extensive. http://sites.google.com/site/eclipsephases/home/cabinet it's an Excel sheet by Jmobius and some other folks over at RPG.net, and it lays everything out systematically.

Re: I've just been born, help me
if you've never played an RPG before, i'd suggest locating your local game store (most metropolitan areas have them) and letting the person behind the counter know that you are interested in getting into the hoby. They will often know about local conventions, groups, or get-togethers. they may have a bulletin board of people putting together groups. they might have game-nights right in the store. some resources for that are http://gamestoredb.com/ or http://ww2.wizards.com/StoreAndEventLocator/ you could also try to locte interested individuals directly with something like this: http://www.spielerz.com/ There used to be a google map application called "local gamers" which was exactly what it sounds like. I cant find it now, but it's probably still out there somewhere. There is now some ammatureish site called "findlocalgamers" which seems to be screwing up my search results, and is pretty much useless. good luck, and have fun. edit: here you go, try http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=372312

Looking at this I have no clue what's going. I guess I still need to read through the whole book. Should I skip the GM section?

Re: I've just been born, help me
That depends. It contains a lot of information about the Eclipse Phase world that the average person would not know. If you intend to find a persons game and join in it might be best if you skip it. If, however, you think yourself able of seperating character knowledge with player knowledge then you should feel free to dig right in.

Re: I've just been born, help me
In all honesty I might be the one running the group at first. I really don't know what I am doing though, since I've never played an RPG before. So far though, what I've read I've enjoyed so far. The opening fiction was pretty interesting.

In that case it would probably be better if you did read the GM section and make yourself aware of what is going on in the Eclipse Phase world. The GM section is jam packed with story hooks and the like, and is in general a very good read. Try not to get overwhelmed with how much there appears to be in the book. Once you have gotten through the first two chapters or so it gets much easier to pick and choose. As a GM you should really be familiar with all the rules but it is quite easy to learn as you go. If you happen to want to get a quicker primer on the rules of the game you might want to consider having a look at the Quick Start Rules (http://www.eclipsephase.com/qsr). It contains a much condensed version along with a starter adventure to get you going.

Re: I've just been born, help me
I'm mostly worried that it might be overwhelming. I'm assuming this a decently simple system to learn. Am I correct, and my apologies if it seems like I'm asking too much.

The rules look complicated at first but once you get into it they tend to disappear into the background. Most of the time seeing if you succeed at an action it is a simple "Roll d100, check if under a number". After the first few sessions of gameplay you should be fine, except for the occasional check on how something works. Most of the difficult rules in the system is stacked in character creation. It is a bit messy, difficult to get right and there is a fair bit of math involved. That is why someone posted the excel character sheet above, it takes a lot of the headache away from the whole process. And the only bad question is one unasked, feel free to ask about anything you are unsure about.

Re: I've just been born, help me
I tried looking through that character sheet, and I just got beyond lost. But I suppose its due to not reading through the whole manual. Is that character sheet transposable to the stock Eclipse Phase character sheet?

Re: I've just been born, help me
First thing to do to get familiar with a system is to make a character in it. So I would say start slow learn what the abbreviations mean, check out the sample characters and then make something simple, step by step. Also you should leaf through the Quick start rules because it gives you what you need to understand: http://eclipsephase.com/downloads/EclipsePhase_QuickStartRules.pdf Also I'm gonna toot my own horn for a second and point you to my Player's Primer that I made for my own players since they were new to the game too. https://sites.google.com/site/rhyxslair/ It's like a condensed version of the universe to help people get a better idea what is going on in the solar system. I recommend getting only the Primer because the Morph Guide is a work in progress (the images are way too heavy)

Re: I've just been born, help me
To echo what has already been said... 1) Read the manual. It IS big. Don't worry about the whole system gazette, that's just locations. But the rest of it is all good stuff, even if you just skim it. If you're GMing, you may want to read with some post-it notes and mark important bits you'll want to get back to in a rush. 2) If you are uncomfortable with the setting, you may want to read some more fiction. Find Schismatrix (by Bruce Sterling) and read that. There are a few changes compared to EP (namely, in Sterling's book, the culture is much older, and people still grow old and die), but overall it'll give you a strong understanding of the setting. 3) If you are uncomfortable with the mechanics and rules, don't stress. The rules are just there to help the story. Mark the important rules, try them out once or twice on your own before the game so you know more or less how they work. As GM, you are always free to modify the rules on the fly to meet the situation. Make sure you talk with your players and explain to them that you are a new GM and you are trying to run a game that is FUN, and you may break some rules on the way. So they should put away their rulebooks during play, and trust you to run the game. If you have someone else who knows the rules better than you, make a decision beforehand about whether you'd like his help in looking up rules when you need them - he can be a big help, or big trouble in the middle of a dramatic scene. 4) To start with, ignore complex things. I would probably avoid permitting asyncs (psychics) in the first group, or any hacking activity (but hackers are okay). Don't get bogged down in the details, just take it a piece at a time. 5) This whole thing is licensed under Creative Commons. That means the whole thing is free to download. Yes, do buy it, especially if you keep playing past the first game. But in the meantime, take advantage of it. Download the Gamemaster's Screen and either Mind the WMD or Glory, which are starter adventures. Those adventures are completely pre-scripted, with the characters and everything. You just need to read it before the game, and run it for your players. This will be a huge help in teaching the world and mechanics. 6) Character generation is a bit crazy. Use the excel sheet linked. Copy it over by hand if you want, or just print it out and bring it to the games. Play with the excel sheet before you actually do chargen (and expect chargen to take a session by itself). You may want to do your first game with the sample characters available, until you get a sense for the world. 7) These games are made a little easier by having a laptop on hand, to search rules, track details, look up references and so on. I would recommend having a laptop & internet connection, just for the GM. Don't permit any other laptops. Players get distracted easily, and it sinks the game. If you have any specific questions, do ask, and people will help. We were all new once :)

Re: I've just been born, help me
This is pretty great. I bought the book at work today. Been reading through it. Its so great. The bleakness of the world is pretty awesome. I'll probably pick up the gm screen soon. I don't know when I'll be playing a game yet. Not sure when I'll have time.

There are some games online, if you'd like to jump in. They move much slower than in person, but they'll give you some more background on the world and how people run it.

Re: I've just been born, help me
I would recommend www.rpol.net . I know of at least one EP game open to new players. http://www.rpol.net/game.cgi?gi=41456&date=1286979854
