So I was looking over some of the fan-made EP websites, and I saw someone had created a "Campaign Site". My first assumption was that it was a place where a group were going to post the antics of thier characters for posterity.
So I had an idea (I hear it's been done before, but I still think it's a good idea) for, as an example, a Firewall website. Assuming it's community based, people could post up ideas for missions and locations and the like, and this website could basically act like the in-game Firewall, hiring agents to conduct operations in various locations for various reasons.
The way it would work is, whoever is administrating this website puts up a mission with some info, say uh... the assasination of an important figure in some terrorist cell on Mars. It doesn't need to be a complete rundown of the entire mission, just a rough location, maybe some names, and some "DM Information" with advice on how difficult the mission should be and maybe what kind it is. (this could also use a standardised scale, but thats another idea entirely).
A GM who wants to take part gets online, thinks the mission woud fit his group, and accepts it. He gets all the details.... and then some time later he reports back with success/failure and maybe some "Notable occurences" (Or complete action reports depending on how dedicated he's feeling xD).
The website takes note of this, and incorporates it into the persistent "World" they have setting... it's essentially a dynamic community-focused campaign. Major actions and missions completed by Firewall operatives would have effect on missions conducted by other agents. :D
True enough it would require a bit of effort from DMs, some community input and a person/group of people to administrate the site, but I don't think that sounds too outlandish... what do you think? :D

Re: An idea:
I don't have a link because I don't think it exists anymore, but back during the old World of Darkness from White Wolf, when Hunter: The Reckoning was out, some players would post on the forum in character as though the forum were the HunterNet from the game. I didn't really participate because I was mostly playing Mage at the time, but I would lurk there from time to time, and it was pretty interesting. Sometimes someone would post about, say, a powerful vampire killing most of their group, and then later someone else would post about going to the city and tracking that vampire down. I don't know how much was just, essentially, a large, unmoderated, play by post game, and how much of it was stuff that was actually happening around tables and then being brought back to the forum, but it seemed like at least some of it was the latter. It worked well because it was completely optional. If someone came in and posted something absurd, everyone else could just ignore it, or pretend that the person posting was just making stuff up. But if you liked a posted plot element that someone posted about, you could work it into your own games. I think it also worked well because it was Hunter, and therefor, people choosing to be really passionate about some of the weaker characters in the setting. That lead to relatively few posts about having every power in the book and killing elder vampires without breaking a sweat.
Another defunct game, Dead Earth, had a place on their website where you could post your characters along with your stories. Some stories would be incorporated into the official plot, and any character on their would be available to use as an NPC.
