The pro-democracy student protests in Hong Kong are using an app called FireChat that forms a Mesh network through Bluetooth in order to get around cell phone and wi-fi outages. If you have a smartphone, I strongly suggest getting Firechat, it would come in real handy if there's a natural disaster or local tyranny outbreak. Maybe we could start an EP firechat thing. Of course, it's worth pointing out that a government will tend to have access to things like electronic warfare systems capable of completely jamming all signal spectra, but it at least raises the bar for that kind of shenanigannery.
