[Homebrew] Space Bear!
Long story short, somebody in our group wants to use a bear as his primary combat morph. In addition, somebody else had the bright idea of having his infolife ego ghostride onto a synthmorph equipped with funnels (for those of you who aren't giant robot fans, autonomous wirelessly-controlled weapon drones) and controlling those to make himself useful in combat. Think a polar bear + Nu Gundam. So then: New basic morph: Giant Frakking Space-Bear Implants: Basic Bio-Mods, Basic Mesh Inserts, Carapace Armor, Cortical Stack, Enhanced Respiration, Temperature Tolerance APT Max: 30 Durability: 40 Wound Threshold 8 Advantages: Claw Attack (DV 2d10 + 2), +10 SOM, +5 REF, +5 to one other apititude of the player's choice, +10 Fray. Additional Implants: Direction Sense (low) Enhanced Hearing (low) Enhanced Smell (low) Adrenal Boost (high) Muscle Augmentation (high) Anti-Glare (low) Ghostrider Module (low) Hardened Skeleton (high) Enhanced Reflexes (expensive) Weapon Mount (Dorsal turret, swiveling) (moderate) 4x Funnel Mount / Recharger (low) Basic Weapon Systems: 1x Smartlinked Gyromounted Plasma Rifle, Turret Mounted (2x moderate, 1x expensive) + Coaxial Extended Magazine Smart Magazine Imaging Scoped Heavy Slugthrower Pistol (3x low, 1x moderate) 4x Rail Sniper Rifles (high) for funnels. Other Standard Equipment 4x Fin Funnels (expensive) New Equipment: Fin Funnel [Expensive] Movement 8/40, Max Velocity 100, Armor 14/12, Durability 35, Wound Threshold 6, Vectored-Thrust Mobility Enhancements: +5 REF, 360-Degree Vision, Puppet Sock, Enhanced Vision, Chameleon Skin, Light Combat Armor, Lidar, T-ray Emitter, Weapon Mount (fixed). Disadvantage: Rechargeable batteries capable 90-second independent operational time and weapons functions. Recharges in 30 seconds. Total Cost: 117 CP for ego-occupant, 62 of which counts towards the credit cap. 84 CP for funnel operator, all in creds. For a truly astounding cost, you and your infolife partner can have equally astounding firepower! Okay, seriously, though. We haven't been through the rules all that carefully, so can anybody spot any serious rules issues with this lashup? Yes, we realize that weapon mounts aren't allowed to be on biomorphs RAW, but decided to handwave it as mounted into the wired carapace of the bear. Also, comments and advice on taking the CP cost below 200? In particular, a less clunky way of implementing funnels would be cool.

I'm guessing that Mr Space Bear has a very limited role in covert operations. ;)

Re: [Homebrew] Space Bear!
This morph is a little silly, but because I'm so grateful that you're not instead posting giant blue jungle smurf morph stats, I will comment on it! 1. Space Bear is no fun in zero G. Get some thumbs, space bear. Prehensile feet would be slick, too. 2. Space Bear is a big ol' target (if it's really as big as a polar bear, i.e. as big as some cars, +10 to be hit) with Durability 40. The two main combat morphs given in core have 50 or 60 Durability. Space Bear fails as a twink morph. 3. Space Bear should have Social Stigma: Giant Frakking Space Bear. Sorry, no one at the party wants to talk to Space Bear. 4. Space Bear eats too much. An adult polar bear goes through something like 200 lbs. of seal meat a week. Even allowing for the ability to make Giant Frakking Space Energy Bars (Bear Formula) in your fabber, the PC should probably pay a regular retainer of cred or rep for food. In resource poor environments, Space Bear might get cannibalized by hungry neotenics. 5. As you noted, space bear has a few augs that are robotic. Although a bear with a hardened skeleton can probably take a few hard points, I'd charge extra to allow them in a biomorph. 6. Bears aren't likely candidates for uplifting. Space Bear is more likely a pod with a cyberbrain than a biomorph. 7. Space Bear is a large target but gets a Fray bonus? Hrm. Polar bears are stealth hunters; I don't really seem them dodging nimbly across the battlefield. Might have some natural armor, though. Speaking of which, Space Bear could use some (rather expensive) bear armor. 8. Space Bear Vac Suits, Space Bear Invisibility Cloaks, and Space Bear Rocket Packs all have to be specially designed, and should therefore cost more. 9. Instead of the funnels, you could try modifying the Guardian Angel bot from Core. I'm thinking Space Bear probably lives on Mars and doesn't actually like space very much, given the close quarters, cramped airlocks, and the difficulty of disposing of a polar bear's daily output of poop. We do mention the creation of crazy transgenic monsters for arena fighting in a coming supplement, so this is an interesting test of what that sort of critter will do in combat.

Have you tried open hand slapping your players when they ask for junk like this? Back around '03 there was a friend of a friend in my DnD group that griped and demanded to play insectoids out of the psionics handbook no matter how vanilla our game setting. I found that some quick, humiliating strikes about the ears and face usually got a half-elf out of him. I mean, really...space bear?

Wait until you see the Giant Space Walrus. With frickin' lasers in his head.

Or the Space Vaccum Cleaner Defence Bot from Luna, which looks just like any 20th century hoover except its terribly oversized...and the suction hose is replaced with a plasma cannon.

Really need to stay more up to date on advanced military hardware. ;) That particular design concept became part of MegaMaid (also known as 'SpaceBall One').

I was hoping on an uplift that made sense, but i read about a munchkinized thingie that has nothing to do with a bear and how a base version would make sense for an environment. Lost opportunity!

Powerfull, but might be fun.
That build looks like it will be able to kick most common thugs into the next system. I think that a common guy with a gun will be no problem. If your campaign thus far is very combat oriented, it should be no problem as you are most likely fighting more than common mooks and the rest of the party is just as kill focused. But, if the rest of the party is more soical/tech bassed, it will stick out like a, well, SPACE BEAR. This will result in one guy either hogging all the kills, or sitting on his rump as everyone else negosates and finds clues and does other stuff that is not at all bear like. I would love the meet the madman that thought of this and shake its hand.
