Has anyone seen the movie Her? It seems to be about a guy falling in love with an AI. I have no idea if its just a romantic comedy that in the end makes it oh so clear how real women are much better than tailor made AI personalities, but being a Spike Jonze movie you could hope for something better.

I saw that and had the same
I saw that and had the same thought. Haven't seen it, but I'll be keeping an eye on it.
(As a note, how come it's always the human man falling in love with a female AI? Just judging based on my friends, I'd sort of expect it to be the other way around.)

a whole bunch of slightly sexiest reasons.
the traditional gender roles put women in the supporting roles so when people make a helpful AI it is more likely to be female than male (every car GPS navigator i have seen defaults to a female voice N only about 4, more examples in fictional AIs. military support AIs buck the trend a bit)
AI programers have been mostly male geeks who are in the back of there minds making steps towards robot girlfriends (this is a perception, if it was ever true it isn't any more)
most AIs exist to support humans (except war bots and evil ones) this automatically puts them on the more submissive side of any relationship. traditionally the female side in a romantic relationship.
movies still cast male leads when there is no good reason to use one sex over another. so the partner has to be female because otherwise the 'ewe gay' overwhelms the 'is an AI a person'
many of these issues are only slowly seeping out of the community. and big budget movie makers are inherently conservative so they wont lead the way unless they are making a movie about leading the way on gender equality, and that movie probably has no AIs at all.
