I have a bit of a dilemma on my hands, as it concerns the safety and happiness of someone dear to me. I know that this conversation may not remain private, but if you somehow manage to find out the identity of my friend, please do not approach her or otherwise try to convince her. Admonishment from a stranger will only harden her opinions, and any messages you might have would be better served through the words of one she trusts.
Back on Mars, I befriended a Fall refugee indentured to servitude by the Cognite Hypercorp. She was originally born as an unmodified human, growing up in an impoverished Nation-State before the Fall. The government, in order to better track and control its populace, enacted a program to install cortical stacks in the unmodified population, all the better to interrogate and monitor thoughts via backups and life recorders. She received the implants, as did the rest of her family: it was never her choice.
I helped her egocast to the Outer System around the time I fled Mars. She was grateful to be released from a life of slavery, but she never got used to her new morph. She missed her old body, feeling trapped in a foreign form which felt "wrong" to her. She did not adjust well to Autonomist life: she missed the relative privacy brought to her back in her Mesh-less home, and felt constantly hounded and judged by the @-Rep system when she got negative hits for her apprehension around AGI and Uplift citizens, as well as her bio-conservative views.
She has discussed to me, in private conversations, of increasing sympathy towards the Jovian Republic. She has spent much time and effort in getting something close to her original body, even if it's a genetic clone (a task with which I helped her). Once she becomes "natural," she says, she plans on moving to Europa and apply for citizenship. She wants to go back to a simpler way of living, something closer to her Old Earth years.
My friend is at a crisis point in her life, and she needs support and help. As much as it pains me to say, I cannot prevent her from joining the Jovians, for it would be against everything I stand for. I do not mind her being bioconservative, but I don't want her to join a regime I despise. However, some part of me says "if she will be happy and content there, is it right for me to prevent her from leaving?" Such thoughts are quickly quenched when I realize that she might live in misery as an "Outer System foreigner" in a society which will forever fear her.
Any help you can give me is appreciated! Whatever her decision, I hope that everything works out for the best.
