Homeless? That sounds horrible. You should move to the Titanian Commonw... errr I mean Sweden, good social security for everyone! Also, there's no rule that says you can't print the pdfs, if you can find a place to print them cheap or for free (like a workplace or something).

Well, I live in Sweden so there's one problem solved. Can't really do anything about the travel expenses though. And you are right, printing does cost money and since you already have most of the books... Still, I have occassionly printed roleplaying books because paying for just the paper was cheaper than the actual book (like Ars Magica 4th edition when they released that as a free pdf).

Heh, if you were serious about that Sweden thing, I might do a little bit of research in regards to that. It's really hard to print out RPG books, they tend to be really long and filled with ink-draining pictures. I printed out a 70 something page retroclone once, and even then I had to cut a significant number of pages out, and it was like 10 bucks. (10 dollars could feed me for a whole day, at 3 dollars and 30 cents a meal!)
Well, on second thought I think I would be incredibly stupid of me to promise a space in my 1-room appartment to someone I have never met. While I woul really like to help you with your homeless situation I think we have to admit that trying to move to my place in Sweden isn't the best solution. I do believe that Sweden is a great country to live in, as a general belief though, as people are only homeless if they actually want to be. Where do you currently live? Oh, and my food budget is actually less than that per meal. :)

Ugh, squatting in Texas. I've heard some horror stories from some railway travelling crustpunks I've met about the authorities not mixing well with the idea of squatting (sometimes pretty violently). I feel for you, it's not easy to travel when homeless and with no resources, and if you want to squat somewhere Texas probably isn't your best bet in the continental United States.

Social security hardly have the funding and means to give out the welfare checks, especially outside Stockholm, Göteborg and Malmö. The myth that homelessness in Sweden (and other places) is solely connected to drug abuse, mental illness etc is something we need to throw out the window if we're going to battle the problem. In my time on the streets, about 1 in 5 of the people I met was just ordinary men and women, like myself, who'd fallen on hard times; lost a job, couldn't pay rent, didn't get any welfare, didn't have any savings and lacked a social saftey net. And try to get a home if you're out of a job, and vice versa. I've even met single parents with kids on the street. Social security do jack-shit. At most they take the kids and place them in foster homes, and leave the parent to fend for themselves. The utopian myth of social security in Sweden is dead, rotting and should be in the grave, but sadly works in the favour of the system.

Real democratic social
Real democratic social security would entail a democratic economic system, and unfortunately even the most leftist and liberal social democratic states are still part of the most authoritarian economic system the world has ever known. Political democracy (and its various aspirations, including in the social security sphere) demands economic democracy for any real long-term efficacy.

Can you imagine how Swedes would feel without the comforting myth of social security? It is part of what makes feel good about themselves and secure in the world: how well or badly it actually works is less important than the feeling that in Sweden we have already solved all the social problems (just some minor adjustment needed). As a Swede living in the UK it is interesting to look at the dream from both the inside and outside. I think objectively speaking it is true that Sweden has great social security, but woe to those who fall through the cracks! Since the big idea is that everything works fine, if you do not conform to it it must be *your* fault somehow (but don't worry, we won't say it to your face...). The UK system is much nastier and has far more sinkholes, but if you are stuck there there is not the same consensus about who or what you are. This, IMHO, is a reason the UK actually integrates immigrants better than Sweden, despite being meaner with help to them. (And as I said in the old thread discussing Rimwards, all of this makes excellent material for a "down and out on Titan" adventure.)
