Getting a Body (Octavia Local Mesh)
--Descriptor before the conversation Center-- I have been trying to dig around for information regarding gaining a body and all I can find are indentured servant contracts. Curious if one program is better then the other, please help. ~ Peter ---Chat Room--- Currently in the room a child sits alone behind a transparent blue table. He seems to be around nine or ten years of age, his avatar has purple hair and red eyes. It appears he is fair of skin and he is dressed in a ragged brown shirt and a pair of black shorts.

Re: Getting a Body (Octavia Local Mesh)
---Chat Room--- A new avatar materializes on the other side of the table, a tall man with a black face, the facial features comprised purely of tattoos which move and animate with a fascinating, if slightly disturbing, realism. He is clad in the sort of sparse, loose garments commonly associated with Scum. ---OpenInsurgency has entered chat--- Welcome to the sunny hell that is Mars, friend. And in case you haven't noticed, you won't be finding any good indentured contracts. Hell's bells, the entire damn concept is moronic and naive. Sorry to sound harsh here buddy, but take it from me; I have some first - or should I say, second - hand experience of working for the suits I have not regretted leaving them behind for one moment. To any who know me I'll be sounding like a stuck record here, but life in the Inner System just ain't worth it. The only freedom to be had is to operate illegally, and even then you could have that freedom in the Outer System without getting the Authority all riled. Next time a scum barge drops by, you hook up with them and let them sort you out with a flesh-suit. Real deal. No planned redundancy crap, no indentured contract, and on the plus side you'll have access to the sort of morphs and mods you could never get access to planetside. Sure, you'll be indebted to them for a while, but for the most part we Scum stick by our promises and don't do underhanded deals. And if they do try and screw you over, just give me their names and I'll sort you out just fine.

-- Chat Room -- A third avatar manifests; a parrot, with dull gray plumage. The avatar would be probably be considered photo-realistic, were it not for the halo of colour dancing behind his head, slowly shifting through the colours of the rainbow, as if to make up for the general lack of colour the avatar otherwise displays. It lands on the table in a somewhat inelegant manner. > Telemachus Sneezed has entered the chat. Is there anything particularly keeping you where you are? Friends, family, work, that sort of thing? Otherwise, I think the whole "run to the Outer System" plan seems pretty good, if you can find a scum to source you a new-ish body. If it were me, and it's not, well, not yet, but if it was me, I'd be pretty curious about the history of the morph your new-found scum friends have procured for you. Really curious, actually. If you absolutely, and I mean absolutely, must go down the working-for-a-monkey-in-a-suit-to-get-a-monkey-suit route, then sympathies, but just go for whatever requires the least amount of time. After about a minute - maybe a minute of a half - of indentured servitude to somebody, you'll probably be counting the seconds until you're free. Having a shiny morph won't make those seconds go any quicker. Or you could take the middle route, grab the best morph you can and fly away as fast as you can. If you've got the right contacts, you might be able to get away with it.

--Chat Room-- Another avatar materializes in the room. Tall, dark and suited in navy blue pinstrip with a fine red tie. His face is ever shifting from both male to female. The figure reaches into a jacket pocket and produces a zippo lighter, lighting a long, thin cigar that appears in the blink of an eye. A puff of smoke curls upward as the figure approaches, sitting confidently on the table. The figure clears its throat, a rich, baritone voice filling the simulspace. --Prophet has entered the Chat Room-- I wouldn't listen to these Outer Rim kids--kid. You never know what's going on out there. A Scum barge could hook you up sure, but, you'd need to get past Jovian customs too, or make a break for it, or pull a few strings. Said strings land you further in debt, all the while you need to worry about your safety. Did you see the news? Just the other day a Scum barge had to be evacuated, its older-than-hell fission drives lost containment nearly killing all on board. Several had to be backed-up but a few, lost forever. That happens quite often out there ya know, you truly die. Now, of course it is easily apparent that I represent our stable Planetary Consortium. I've got a few things to tell you kid. I won't lie, indentured service is no picnic, and you'll have your work cut out for you. At the same time we can guarantee that you get a decent morph, flesh and blood and access to the best and safest modifications in the system, even a license to buy military or enforcement mods. You'll be working with the best and brightest of what is left of us, and we all work for a common goal. Ya see, mankind needs a fresh start, built on the labor and diligent engineering of those who truly care. We're all in this together pal, I'm prepared to offer a contract in mining, sousveillence, or even security. Think about it, real food, a place to hang your hat, even a taste of home grown vices. Wheat whiskey, real tobacco, barley beer, whatever you might want. Its real, we're real, don't take a chance on false promises. Come and be a part of the Planetary Consortium, it's no cliche, we're working for the future.

Re: Getting a Body (Octavia Local Mesh)
"Prophet". A fitting name for someone full of false promises. Don't put up with this guy's crap; all those corporate fellas are bothered about is making sure they're still in the black at the end of every month, and they will wring out all your effort and creativity until they are satisfied there's nothing left worth scratch. I ain't saying life in the Rim is easy, and I'm not saying it's an easy trip to get there; hell, if it were every schmuck with an ounce of sense would up sticks and head rimward in an instant. What lies before you, kid, is a tough choice. Sure, you could stick it out with the Consortium and live a nice, "safe" life. But in return you gotta place loyalty to them over anything else, especially over loyalty to yourself. You'll be just another drone plodding away through a meaningless life devoid of any new experiences beyond a fresh set of forms to get used to every few years. That's one option. The other? Well, let's just say it blows the Consortium's idea of a good "life" out of the ballpark. Out in the rim, you aren't beholden to anyone except yourself; your life is your own, to do what you will. All the consequences come back on you, but at the same time all the rewards go the same way. I don't pretend it's any safer than any other lifestyle (with the TITAN's still around, where in the universe is safe?), but it's a fresher life than any other, full of new experiences and senses. To "Prophet" here, you're just a kid - someone who needs controlling. Out on the rim, the fringe, you're a grown-up and you're treated like it. Take a chance, man. Trust my judgment here; I made the wrong choice once, and I'll be damned if I let anyone else make that mistake themselves.

Re: Getting a Body (Octavia Local Mesh)
"Seems a bit funny for a guy talking about freedom and choice to end his spiel saying how he won't let somebody make a mistake. I guess that's the scariest thing about life out there, each person is their own authority, and... well, I've met some scary, thoroughly unhinged and unscrupulous people, and at least the authority that's oppressing us all is also the authority that's keeping them from doing all kinds of unspeakable things to people around them. I mean, it's not that I'm on the side of Captain Corporate here, fancy suit and all, but I think there's some risks to running out towards the Rim that really ought to be addressed if somebody's thinking about making that sort of move, right?"

Re: Getting a Body (Octavia Local Mesh)
Listen to these fools. Bickering among each other on the cuspice of extinction. I'm here looking at you (the avatar takes a long puff from his cigarette) and I see hope. YOU kid, are the hope that humanity depends on. Yes, it requires sacrifice, yes it requires service and loyalty. But, I ask you this, what in humanity hasn't asked such things in the past? What will not in the future? They say "be your own man" in the Rim. Yeah sure, like it is some kind of rendition of the wild, wild west. Give me a break. If they lived to their evolved sense of preach, well, we would all have evolved beyond corporeality then wouldn't we have? What I'm offering is assurance, trust, strength and family. What they are offering. Well, isn't it obvious that they don't even know what they're offering. Freedom--right, what freedoms you have out there, as Telemachus has said, flying off the handle. People being killed en masse, entire habitats being compromised--the list goes on. I'm offering a new beginning. A guaranteed fresh start, in the service of humanity, removed from Jovian fanaticism and Outer Rim insanity. Join us kid, and you will know why you worked so hard.

"Whoa, whoa, wait a moment, while I'm all for the use of authority to stop people killing one another, or manufacturing goodness knows what and unleashing it upon people, or there being standardized safe-guards to protect us from industrial accidents, I'm pretty sure we can have all of these things without that whole indentured servitude thing." "I guess I'm just a tiny, wee bit uncomfortable thinking that somebody might interpret what I'm saying as supporting the person who talks about being an indentured servant in the service of humanity. Ruffles certain feathers, you know."

--Chat Room--
--Chat Room-- Another avatar manifests in the room. It is that of a male human in his mid to late 20s. He wears a pair of shades and his hair is a black bowl cut, and dresses in an open black leather jacket. The partial image of Mars can be seen on his shirt, with the words "Free Mars Mesh" above it. --Libertad has entered the chat room-- I'd advise against entering into a contract with the Planetary Consortium's Hypercorps. Political lobbyists influence politicians in the Tharsis League to enact laws inimical to the welfare of infomorph workers. A hypercorp can extend the terms of service; say you entered a contract for 5 years of work. Your employer can extend the contract to 20 years without your consent; it's not technically legal, but law enforcement is on hypercorp payroll and look the other way if they want to keep their jobs. I'd recommend contacting an infomorph rights group for legal representation and advice for dealing with Hypercorps. Here, I'll send you a link to a well-regarded organization. --Chat Room-- An avatar stubbornly refuses to manifest. Instead a disembodied voice comes from apparent thin air. --Ilmarinen has entered the chat room-- Bodies are a racket. The second you get sleeved into a body its value drops by like 20%. After that you have to keep it fed, keep it supplied with oxygen, get space to lay it out in, waste eight hours a day doing basically nothing, and do all sorts of other fussy stuff. And for what? If there is any work you can do with a body that can't be done wih a mind and a couple of remote controlled robots, it's not worth doing. Think about it: did you really get away from the Fall to become an elevator attendant or a rock miner? Here's my pitch: forget the body. Beam yourself to a server city exactly as you are right now. The lodgings are basically free, though there is a fee to pay if you want time acceleration or the really fancy simulspaces. If you still want a body, no problem - We have cornucopia machines with no stupid restrictions or patent locks. Do a couple months of freelance work around the mesh and you'll be able to make your own body from scratch - no corporate Flats, no questionable bodies with a cortical stack-sized hole in the back of the neck, just whatever your personal design criteria are. But why would you want to be a body at all? People will tell you there is a value in it. There is not. Whatever sensations you think humans enjoy are just electrical signals to the meat computer that is the brain. Around these parts these electrical signals are generated by state-of-the-art machines. As far as your hindbrain knows, you'll be living in a different body every day. You can be a robot or an octopus. You'll be able to climb Olympus Mons or Mount Olympus. You'll be able to eat the perfect steak every day. And if you want, you'll be able to boost your brain speed to the point where these jokers are all glacially slow. In the time it takes them to read a news article you will have discussed it with your friends, gotten sick of talking about it, and gotten started on dinner. Eating it, not making it - you don't get the annoying parts of life here in paradise. Remember: there are people who will tell you that it's bad to be an infomorph. That you're someow incomplete unless your mind is trapped in a shell of some sort. But you know that the mind is the only thing that matters. If you're interested I'll put you on the notification list and the next time we get a new server online you can egocast yourself over and begin your new life.
