Freemarket, another TH game
I was wondering if anyone has had a chance to look over or play the new game, Freemarket. It was created by the guys who brought you the Mouse Guard RPG, Crane and Sorensen. Set on a Saturian system orbital habitat with a reputation economy (sound familiar?), you interact with all the other inhabitants. The designers talk about it being a science fiction game as a opposed to a science fiction fighting game, though they do say that people can fight and get killed in the game. I'm going to download the pdf, and if I like it, buy the box set with cards and counters, but I was wondering if anyone had played it already? http://projectdonut.com/freemarket/

The game's shit, but it does have some decent bits you might be able to sift out for an Eclipse Phase game on an Anarchist hab. Also, /tg/'s made a pretty good analysis of it in the discussion here.

Because, like some anon in the link I posted said, it's half incredibly shitty card-based mechanics, and half wanking all over the author's "utopic" society.

I wouldn't say Freemarket is shit, but it's definitely a different game from Eclipse Phase. I'd compare it more to HOL and Paranoia, in that it's only nominally a roleplaying game, and more of a social interaction board game (another good example of these is Diplomacy). If you are going to play it, do note that the game isn't nearly as serious as EP, and it's a bit more casual affair.

I've read it but not played it and I'm a big fan. Definitely very different to EP in every way, mechanically and thematically. Sure I might get a different opinion after play but for now I think it's awesome.

On the other hand, the Flow-based market structure is actually pretty deep, and to me seems to function at least a bit more concisely than the reputation mechanic of EP... if only because it is less abstract, and more structured. I'd recommend trying it as a reputation-based version of Monopoly, if anything. Most of the game is bland (the way the game handles memories and data is a bit ridiculous), but there are elements that are worth checking out (skip to the flow chapter for an interesting outlook on how to handle a reputation economy... should you ignore the parts involving challenges, of course).

Now, i didn't read anything besides the /tg thread but the whole flow-mechanic seems to me like somebody changed the labels on money and made some uneconomic rules with it.

Not really. For one thing, Flow actually encourages the free distribution of goods and information. You get flow for simply giving gifts that does not detract from the flow of the person you are giving it to (albeit only for the first copy you give). It also encourages socialization by granting flow whenever you add someone as a friend (you both get flow in the process). It encourages positive participation through the frownie/attaboy mechanics (though I really hate those names). Lastly, it creates the concept of adhocracy (basically temporary corporations) through the MRCZs. Flow works differently from money in that the people do not directly control the... um... flow of Flow. Much like with EP's reputation economy, the addition and subtraction of Flow occurs based on the character's actions, but the character may not actively transact flow (except perhaps through gifting, frownies and attaboys... all of which still have limitations that money does not have).
