Hello, I'm new to this gmae, and I want to give it a good shot.
My potential-GM is allowing me to play a Martian artist-engineer who specializes in making flexible synthmorphs. I told him that I was going to try and maintain two bodies for this purpose: a slitheroid in order to deal with the customers and making the initial framework of the synths, and a swarm for detail-work and wiring. However, I was wondering if there are better models for performing these functions, since those two choices were made less on actual game-knowledge and more on cool-factor. What models would the most efficient at performing the task at hand, and do you have any recommendations for how to make the character work in terms of skills?
(Really, really new at this.)

Re: First Time Player, Synth-Making Question
Well, you could give any synth Fractal Digits for microscopic detail work.

Okay, so I don't necessarily need a swarm-mode to do the wiring then. Any suggestions on a morph I could use all-around then? I know for a fact that Reapers are sort of wartime-only or something.

Do you have access to Sunward, I kind of like the Steel Morph (and its variants)

Re: First Time Player, Synth-Making Question
A lot of engineering can likely be done in any kind of morph; you direct workbots using Interface or just program the fabber to produce the parts. For a synthmorph designer looking good might be more important - who wants to go to the badly clothed tailor?
I think the slitheroid and swarmanoid are good morph choices. Maybe add an extra pair of arms to the slitheroid? If you have Sunwards, take a look at the Liquid Silver version of the Steel Morph.
For the truly weird, especially if you fork and multitask a lot, what about a flexbot?

Re: First Time Player, Synth-Making Question
If you want a decent humanoid synthetic, the Steel (esp. the slightly-buffed Liquid Steel) are really the only way to go. Synthetics are just worse in general. :(
But, it's a good point that most work is actually done by nanites. Detailed hardware/repair work 'by hand' is probably spur-of-the-moment stuff, the realm of B&E jobs and field-rigging.

Re: First Time Player, Synth-Making Question
I can think of one other possible use for fine detail hand work, and it would be in the design of new parts. Basically it could be faster to make a change to a prototype by hand and then test it then it is to code in the change and make a new prototype (probably also uses less resources). Once you have the prototype working you could then scan it in to make a set of blueprints.
But for installing new parts and repairs, it would be nanotech all the way.

I think that probably all happens in simulspace, but sure. :)

Re: First Time Player, Synth-Making Question
So far, all I have is the corebook. will go looking for this 'Sunward' book, though. Liquid metal has been one of my favorite things about science fiction.
Also, since apparently most of the detail-work is done in frabricators, I guess I should take a littel bit of computer skill as well. For programming and such.
The character himself specializes in making the synths he works with flexible and able to hide small weapons like extendable rapiers, canes, and handguns.

Bottom line, though, is that it's the post-singularity nano-future. You can do whatever you want for your character. :)

Re: First Time Player, Synth-Making Question
Sounds very much like the flexbot synth is what you need. Multiple modules that can perform independantly with nanocapabilities, or combine to form a robot walker for carrying stuff or interacting with customers, it can even turn into a hovercraft for ferrying stuff around.
