Eris Incursion? (or, wargames and EP)
Hi, EP forums! Sometime lurker, but new poster here. I recently ran Million Year Echo for my group, and when reading through it, I found this little bit in the text.
Quote:
It (a game table) will shift from ping pong to minis and a terrain set for the Battle of Agincourt; then the Battle of Marathon; and finally settles on the Eris Incursion, a simulation of ultimate mercenaries’ seizure and subsequent defense of the Discord Gate on Eris on behalf of Go-nin.
It's not a big deal in the adventure itself, but, as both an Ultimate fanbot and a wargamer, I was intrigued by the possibilities presented by such a game. Unfortunately, I can't find much in the books on the specifics of the Eris battle(s), or, really, much on anything military at all. This sort of makes sense given that the focus of the game is not on military topics, but it's a subject that has piqued my interest. My questions, then, are these: First, the fact that this is a thing that a random game table is set up for suggests that tabletop wargaming is a common enough hobby in setting that a manufacturer on Mars programmed multiple games into the table. In an era of computerization and nanofabrication, though, I'm curious what the hobby would look like in the setting. I'd imagine that there would be a lot of automation of the rules, allowing for higher complexity in the simulation without needing to burden players with tables, more rolling of dice, etc., thus saving time. I'd also suspect that the actual building and painting side of the hobby has sort of gone the way of the dodo, given both the relative lack of space available for storage and the ease of using nanofabrication, holographic projection, or similar methods to make specific pieces for each game. Anybody have thoughts on what the hobby might look like? On a more IRL implementation angle, does anyone know of any decent information on the types and sizes of forces present at Eris specifically? Also, in general, what would military, and especially ground-based, forces look like in the setting? Finally, if there are other wargamers on here, any recommendations on a ruleset that you think would be good to play out conflicts in the EP setting? This will obviously depend on the scale of the conflict, but there seems to be room for everything, between local actions like Eris and the Fall itself.
My skype name is the same as my username here. Feel free to poke me.

actually miniatures will be a
actually miniatures will be a prized possession because of the hand detailing invested in them and I do not see in the inner system at least being nanofabbed by players, after a physical mini is a form of drm and the corps want to control distribution of that.
