Direct Action Organization
How do you guys think Direct Action organizes? Do they have a military like structure, or is it mostly composed of contractor mercenaries? What structure do you guys think would be cool for them?

Direct Action probably
Direct Action probably organizes along normal military rank structure. Outside contractors would probably be brought in not infrequently, but probably wouldn't be trusted and would be largely given the shit detail work. Not necessarily cannon-fodder work, since mercs really hate being used as disposable cannon fodder, but the kind of shit grunt work that the "real" DA mercs would rather not be doing; boring patrols, logistics, etc.

Probably not logistics. There
Probably not logistics. There are few things that can screw up a military faster than poor materiel organization and delivery. But other than that, I'd agree that freelancers get the crappy jobs. Cannon fodder is not the right term, but I still would see them as being on the pointy end of the stick. It's what they sign on for, and they have to know it. They're not the ones who sleeve into Fenrirs or Reapers, they're the armed splicers doing patrols at distance to prevent an ambush from taking out the heavy weapons.

Direct Action fits the
Direct Action fits the perfect definition of Private Army. Rigid military chain of command until you get to corporate management which would take the place of general officers and marshals.

Command and control
One would look at the US marine corps for layout as the Marines are responsible for all of their own equipment and need to be self reliant as they are stuck in-between the army and the navy and refuse to beholden to either.

Bureaucracy
When you say "organization," do you mean either or both of: A. The chain of authority for groups of mercenaries on particular jobs, or B. The organization chart for the hypercorporation itself? (A) is probably very similar to the military in the sense that there's an established chain of command and "ranks" to determine who takes orders from whom. However, there may also be a "customer service representative" either onsite or available by beta fork who is senior to the highest military officer but may have no military background and is responsible for enforcing the terms of the contract and making sure the client is happy. (B) Mercenary firms tend to be headed by ex-soldiers, but that's not always true. The back office will be set up like any joint stock corporation, with accountants, middle managers, salespeople, and too many VPs with job titles you can't quite pin down. Many of them never touch guns or talk to the people who do.
