Dice, dice baby.
One quick question: Will EP use 1 type of die or multiple? See, my last 3 rpg systems used 1 type of die, either d6's in the case of gurps and eaba, or d10's in the case of cthulhutech. I know just one type of die makes things convenient, but, dammit, we're gamers, we should all have various types of dice. I know that EP uses a % system so I assume we'll need 2d10 to roll %, will it use other types of dice for damage and such?

Q Workshop do do some sci-fi
Q Workshop do do some sci-fi themed dice sets, but I wonder what would be the best theme/symbol to use for a EP-themed set? Is there anything that can succinctly get across the EP/transhuman theme in a single symbol?

I think my concern would be that because it's a crescent, it'd just end up looking like a crescent moon in the end, and a crescent moon doesn't really say, "Transhumanist sci-fi" to me. I guess they could stylize the corona a bit though to take it away from that possibility.

It primarily depends on how they do the markings. If they engrave them, then the logo is likely not a possibility, because engraved markings are highly innacurate and generally very broad. If it's simply painted on, I'm sure you could get a very accurate-looking eclipse logo on the die. Just remember that the largest difference between a solar eclipse and a very thin crescent moon are the solar flares. In the logo, they are the parts that seem thicker than the rest. It makes the whole thing look somewhat irregular, and very stylish.

If it has to be engraved... maybe an "EP"?

Let me just throw out all the ideas that come to mind, then....
  • Helix, representing DNA and genetics
  • ∞, representing infinity and the infinite possibilities that transhumanism aspires to (might look like a sideways 8, so it could be confusing)

  • T, for transhuman?
That's about all I got right now.

crescent moon logo? Uh, no.
Careful about using a crescent moon as a symbol. Some islamic extremists think they own the crescent moon symbol and may react badly to it's use by others. Seriously, this is a real possibility until the rest of the world gets enough courage to start standing up to these nuts instead of placating them.

... mmm maybe a stylized image of a Pandora Gate entrance? Something that could stand as a "ten" while also being unique to EP? This presumes (haven't seen one yet) that the gizmo looks like some manner of "tech ring", something tetrahedral (seems a common theme in depections of wormhole gates, or perhaps something else relatively simple to portray that says "it's not going to be the same on the other side..." Or perhaps a moon with a corona around it? Or would that look too much like "Traveller"?

Hmm, for the corona-moon idea, maybe a ring with a sunburst/starburst on part of it, vaguely like this: http://www.tibetmap.net/SolarEclipse/SolarEclipse2009Jul22-s.jpg It also has the benefit of being somewhat atomic in design then as well.

Well... the hollow sun with a sunburst thingy is probably better to represent an eclipse anyway (and the cultural issue aside, and in truth perhaps there COULD be one... This is a game and supposed to be fun and there is no need to cause a possible fuss... more importantly no need to cause a possible fuss for Catalyst and company who have graciously let us play a part in this. On a more practical matter (and again relating to EP funness). I've been toying with an attempt at a d10 and a d100 using ITC binary (the lettering you saw in "Sunward") and the crescent in Photoshop with an effort to make it look engraving worthy... Any way I try at the scale involved it looks like, err, poo. when I get back from Carlsbad I'll see what Collin's suggestion looks like. Hey Rob and the EP gang... Dude, can the "political rant" crap. It's a statement of fact, like it or not. Some years ago a shoe maker made a line of sneakers with a "fire" shaped logo on them. Muslims complained because they claimed the fire logo resembled the arabic written word for allah, and the shoemaker was forced to take the line off the market after some stores carrying it were burned in protest. So a logo that even resembles a cresent moon could cause trouble.

I call bullcrap. The offending Nike Airs were released in 1997, there were no shoe store bombings, and it got changed a year and a half later with very little noise outside of the initial courtroom battle. Nike and the Council on American-Islamic Relations came to a very amicable agreement where Nike would give them a percentage of the profits. Hell, Nike even built a few playgrounds.

If you're going to talk about some fear-incensing events, at least make them real events.

Please, that's not suffering. Try having a 14-year old niece who looooooooves Twilight and thinks that you will absolutely love it too. Then, when you've finished watching sappy vampire films and soap operas (Seriously? Can we watch one more episode of The Young and The Restless?) with that niece, you have to go outside and play with your 9-year old niece... who has the metabolism of Speedy Gonzalez.

At least I got one of them to like anime... now I just need to figure out something for the other one.

Why the hell should nike have given them a red cent? Who says it was "offending"? If some guy sees a crescent moon dice in the window of a hobby shop on his way to the mosque and decides it's offending should catalyst have to give CAIRN a share of it's profits? If you're going to do a dice with a crescent moon on it, or something that even looks like one, be prepared for trouble. Either be ready to cave in and pay tribute or stand up and say "We don't care if you're offended, we have a right to use that logo if we want and won't pay you a damn red cent for being "offended'!" As to a symbol, how about a stylized phoenix rising? The phoenix representing the new life that now exists in the world.

Hey! How about this as a symbol?
Ever see those creationist icons done that look like a fish on 4 legs with the word "Darwin" in them? I saw a cute one that has a 4 legged fish holding a wrench in one foreleg with "Evolve" in it. So, how about a 4 legged fish wearing a spacesuit logo? Just use the 4 legged fish with an outline around it with a backpack and a "fish bowl" type spacehelmet? The basic idea is that as long aeons ago fish crawled out of the sea and slowly evolved and adapted to land, so now life is crawling up off the earth and evolving and adapting to live in a new environment. I think it's a cute idea, have to draw one up...

I like. I liked the Phoenix suggestion as well... if the metaplot to Eclipse Phase IS what I THINK it is we're going to be in deep doo-doo and have plenty of reasons to use the mental stress rules. Still, all considered, there's something cool about the notion of mankind enduring after the loss of so much... as the saying goes "if the skies cloud with arrows I'll learn to fight in the shade"... there ought to be something to symbolize that candle in the darkness...

Actually I think a fish, in 50's stylized spacesuit, with bubblehelmet, holding a raygun and with the word "RISE" in it works, as the word "Rise" symbolizes the idea of rising above what you are. A crescent moon isn't a
A crescent moon isn't a symbol of Islam. You are thinking of the star and crescent, a specific symbol of a crescent moon with a star generally placed in between the points of the crescent. That said, this is the name of the corporate game. They gave out money as a PR move, which ensured better profits by appeasing their Muslim fanbase. It was a smart move, because not only does it make them look good, but acts as a tax break at the end of the year. Every corporation does it. They aren't suddenly ass-kissers for playing the game, and doing it well.

That said, the phoenix is generally a symbol of resurrection. It'd probably be best to make this a symbol of progress, or movement, or something along those lines. Then again, the phoenix could resemble the death of the natural human race and its rebirth as transhumanity....

My desire in not using a crescent moon isn't because of the loosely Islamic association, but because it's the kind of thing I tend to associate with Wicce and the other modern Earth Mother/Witchcraft/Magic is Real/Semi-New Age movements. I agree with you Greg. All the other designs sounds too complicated, and may not turn out well on such a small surface as a d10. It they were a d6, then maybe, but d10's surface area is so much smaller. I think going with the "EP" in ITC Binary, splash a little color (maybe translucent), and make the "EP" sparkle like the Shadowrun die, and I think we'll all be happy.

Once I get synched up with my local life (one doesn't see a niece's birthday out of state with impunity, nor without an email and phone message machine near crammed to bursting) I'll give it a whirl. I'm thinking of "EP", Colin's Eclipse which initial tests suggest may look a lot better than the original controversial (and too evocative of the results of a BIG meal a couple of hours later if you catch the drift...) partial eclipse crescent, and sort of a simplified Phoenix with the eclipse, the most complicated but worth a try simply because. Fishy sounds cool too, gotta put him in somewhere... wonder if there is someone who does dice bags... THAT would be cool!
