Crowdsourcing: Nanotec Development
Hey guys, I recently started a campaign where the players are starting their own Extropian Business. They have decided on a business recovering TITAN artifacts and studying and reverse engineering them to create their own enhanced Nanotechnology. Needless to say, there are lots of interesting places this game can go, and one of the things I am working on is a way to gamify the development process. Something kinda like: You recover a piece of technology, roll a skill (Not entirely sure what skill) to gleam new insights in the form of 1 research point. The players can then invest these Research points to create new model of an existing piece of technology. Not sure how much research it should take. Anyone have any suggestions for this kinda thing?

Are we limited to just
Are we limited to just nanotechnology, or is any kind of technology fair game? Could we make improvements to a plasma weapon instead of nanotech?

Yeah improvements to any kind
Yeah improvements to any kind of tech is definitely doable

I think it's going to be a race between Project Ozma, Firewall, Oversight, Titanian Naval Intelligence, and probably the Jovians, Lunar-Lagrange Alliance, and the fucking Morningstar to see who can assassinate/forknap all of these guys first and burn everything they've ever so much as sneezed on to a charred husk.

This seems like it's going to
This seems like it's going to be the transhuman version of Frankenstein, except the monster isn't misunderstood, it's actually just evil. Sounds like a good campaign idea though, in a Coen brothers way.

Have fun loosing containment
Have fun loosing containment :P But ya A single skill check just seems to make the process a bit to casual. reverse engineering titan tech should be involved and difficult. Since they are going to need a lot of lab equipment investments. So lets say they recover femto bot 3000 for the first time, using their starting equipment that can get some insight to locomotion. if they buy a molecular analyzer they can learn something about locomotion and nanites, Third piece of applicable hardware and they yield a point towards femto tech. Each of these steps i think would call for a research check with possible hardware synergies, academics and other possible specializations

Oh, yeah, more to the nature
Oh, yeah, more to the nature of your question a system sort of like Black Crusade Compacts or Rogue Trader Endeavors could fit into an EP game like this really well. You'd just need to come up with some things which need to be done for development reasons with their own mini-session games. There's nothing wrong with having some R&D rolls, so long as enough is happening to keep the game fun.

You don't have to tell me
You don't have to tell me that all sorts of nasty things could happen. I have all kinds of ideas for the things that can go wrong, what I need help with is to figure out how things can go right if the players are smart enough to manage it and tough enough to repell all of the outside influences. What kind of benefits can they gain by studying TITAN Tech, and how can I quantify what they learn by engaging in this risky form of mad science.
