Creative Commons... try before you buy
Just a heads up, publishing this under the creative commons license totally got me hooked, and I then bought the book. Thanks.
We the unwilling, lead by the unknowing, have done so much with so little for so long that we can now do anything with nothing.

Oh, absolutely. I shared with X people, and X+3 either bought the file as encouragement or got the dead-tree version. Having an official pdf where the ebook page number matches the actual book's page number is just plain fantastic, as well.

Lorem ipsum dolore sit amet, motherfucker.

First I saw the character sheets "Hmmm, too complicated, I won't like this system" but then I read a bit the pdf online, thinking it would probably have been a starwars with mild transhumanism on it to munchkinize a bit. And whoa, man was I surprised ! Rep makes sense, the universe makes sense, the post-a setting makes sense, the horror setting makes sense. I sent it to a fellow player who added "Oh, it is a D100 system similar to what I know. It is simpler than it looks like". Bought it the same week. The CC license makes me consider to reuse some fonts, pictures and background to write and share the first scenario I GMed (which turned out pretty well ) with a semi-pro look.

Re: Creative Commons... try before you buy
To be perfectly honest i was already in the practice of obtaining PDF's of any RPG product i'm interested in before buying. I just look at it kinda like going to a FLGS to browse before i buy, or a library. I have never played an RPG without purchasing some version of the book because if I like it enough to play i want to support the company. Personally theres no way i could afford to buy every rpg that interests me enough to want to read and I honestly think that being able to obtain the product free first gets me hooked and makes me buy many game systems that i probably would have just passed over if i was forced to buy. I was deciding between EP and Rogue Trader for my next campaign and I was initially pretty set on RT being able to read Eclipse Phase and see how awesome it was made the decision for me and my money went to EP. I'm not sure if the cheap/free pdf strategy works on a market wide scale but it defiantly make companies money from me. As a side not i also started reading Brandon sanderson Novels because of the free version of Warbreaker he put up. I read Warbreaker and then went out and bought the 3 mistborn books the next week.

Just bought the PDF after learning about EP being a CC game. The next few days I'm gonna cram it down the throats of all my friends and watch if they swallow the hook. Then I form a gaming group from there...

I typically hate the "me too" type of posts, but in this case, I have to concur. I initially had right at zero interest in the game, but since it was available as a free download, thought "What the hell." and took a look. After reading the setting part of the book and the game concept, I picked up a dead-tree edition of it on the way home from work this past Wednesday. Had it not been for the free availability of it, I would have completely given the game a pass. /Paul

Re: Creative Commons... try before you buy
Ironically, I was more intrigued by the transhuman elements of the game. The creative commons idea only interested me when I found out there were free PDFs floating about on the net (I had no idea that's what they meant when they said they'd make it a CC game). After that, the latter became my big sell to others; people seem more amicable to trying a game if at some point in your conversation about it you say "here's a free copy". :D

Just to be clear -- the Creative Commons license isn't just about "you can redistribute it for free" -- it also means "you can remix it for free and distribute that." So if you want to translate some of it into a different language, or a different game system, or if you want to take the characters and put them in a spreadsheet format or a differently formatted PDF: not only can you do that, but when you do, you can give it to anyone you want as long as you obey the basic license info.

That's my favorite part. Even if it's a weak example, I actually created a "player-censored" copy of the core book, which has the entire of chapter 12 removed, and it's presence on the Table of Contents censored. If I had knowledge on how to go about doing so, I would love to find a way to remake the core book in epub format, so I can carry and read it on my cellphone. I just need to learn the epub format.
